EDINBORO, Pa. (Oct. 17, 2014) – The OpenMat.com has released its Division I Preseason Wrestling Rankings, with six Edinboro wrestlers showing up in the rankings. Edinboro comes off a fifth place finish at the NCAA Division I National Championships and has three returning All-Americans in
A.J. Schopp,
Mitchell Port, and
Dave Habat.
Schopp is the highest-ranked Fighting Scot as the number one ranked wrestler at 133 lbs. The redshirt senior is a two-time All-American who finished with a 35-3 record a year ago. He took home fourth place at Nationals for the second straight year after entering as the top seed. Schopp enters his senior season with a 107-14 record, ranking 20th in career victories.
Port is ranked second at 141 lbs. Like Schopp, he is a two-time All-American, finishing as the national runner-up in 2013 and third in 2014. He was 32-1 a year ago and was named the EWL Wrestler of the Year. Port brings a 96-15 career ledger into his senior season.
Habat is Edinboro's third returning All-American after going into Nationals unseeded and taking home fourth place at 149 lbs. The redshirt senior is ranked fifth. He finished 2013-14 with a 32-6 record and has a career mark of 98-24.
Vic Avery battled several injuries a year ago and ended the year making his second trip to Nationals. A redshirt junior, he was 25-7 at 184 lbs. and won a pair of matches at Nationals. He is ranked tenth.
Newcomer Austin Matthews shows up at 15th at 157 lbs. A sophomore, Matthews transferred to Edinboro this summer after wrestling at Clarion a year ago. The former Reynolds High School standout and PIAA state champion was named the EWL Freshman of the Year after winning the EWL title at 157 lbs. He went 1-2 at Nationals to end the year with a 23-9 ledger.
Kory Mines is the sixth ranked Edinboro wrestler, ranked 19th at 125 lbs. The redshirt senior earned his first trip to Nationals a year ago. He posted a 24-11 record, winning twice at the national championships.
