Buffalo, N.Y. – The Edinboro men's wrestling team finished fourth at the MAC Championships with the trio of
Ryan Michaels,
Garrett McChesney and
Jared McGill earning spots at the NCAA National Championships.
McChesney had already punched his ticket on Friday reaching the 157 pound final. In the finals, McChesney was tied 1-1 with Derek Raike of Ohio at the end of regulation. After several scrambles in sudden victory it was still tied at 1-1. Raike escaped in four seconds into the first tie breaker and McChesney chose neutral to start the second tie break. Raike held off McChesney for the 2-1 victory.
Michaels earned his way back to the third place match defeating Central Michigan's Jimmy Nugent 10-4 in the consolation semifinals. Michaels dropped a 12-2 major to Dylan Layton of Rider and was forced to wrestle with an NCAA bid on the line in a true fourth place match. Michaels took on Sam Ewing of Buffalo and scored take downs in both the second and third to score the 8-1 decision and earn a spot in Cleveland.
McGill advanced in the consolation semifinals with a 13-3 major decision over Bloomsburg's Braidon Woodward. McGill scored a first-period takedown of Lock Haven's Sam Gautreau on his way to a 5-1 decision and earning a spot at nationals.
The Scots finished fourth overall with 83 points. The three Edinboro wrestlers will open action on March 19 in Cleveland.
