Buffalo, N.Y. – The Edinboro wrestling team had
Chris Vargo and
Garrett McChesney advance to the MAC finals while six other Scots remain alive after the first day of the MAC Championships inside Buffalo's Alumni Arena.
Vargo started his day with a 9-3 decision over Travis Clawson of Clarion in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal round Vargo scored a takedown with nine seconds left in the sudden victory period to advance over Drew Davis of SIUE. Vargo will square off with top-seeded Tyler Klinsky of Rider in the 125-pound title match tomorrow.
Fellow sophomore McChesney also reached the finals at 157. He opened his day with a 4-0 decision over William Morrow of Bloomsburg in the opening round. In the quarters, McChesney trailed top-seeded Mason Shrader of Central Michigan 5-3 entering the third period. A quick escape cut the lead to 5-4. McChesney scored a takedown with 32 seconds left and rode out the period to score a 7-5 decision. After a scoreless first against Buffalo's Kaleb Burgess in the semis, McChesney opened the second with an escape and then at the end of the period scored a takedown and two nearfall points to build a 6-0 lead. Burgess escaped to make it 6-1, but a late takedown gave McChesney the 9-1 major decision. With his win McChesney has punched his ticket to the NCAA National Championships in Cleveland.
The Scots had two other wrestlers reach the semifinals in 141-pounder
Jacob Brenneman and
Jared McGill at 184.
Brenneman topped George Mason's Tate Hisey 7-5 with a takedown in each of the first and second period. Brenneman fell in the semis to top-seeded Elijah Griffin of Rider 19-4. McGill started his day with a major decision of Wyatt Ferguson of Central Michigan 14-5. He dropped a tough 7-4 decision to Malachi Duvall of George Mason in sudden victory.
In addition to Brenneman and McGill,
Ryan Michaels,
Tate Geiser,
Brody Evans and
Aden Roe are still alive in the consolation brackets.
Wrestling resumes on Saturday with the consolation quarter finals at 11:30 a.m. Championships and placement matches begin at 3 p.m.
