The Game Stories
• Edinboro comes into Wednesday's contest with a 3-2 overall ledger after a 91-78 non-conference loss at the hands of host Wheeling Jesuit on Sunday afternoon. The defeat was the first loss for second-year head coach Pat Cleary against a non-PSAC opponent, as he owns a 6-1 record in those games. Prior to Sunday, Edinboro's last loss to a non-PSAC foe came came against Ashland on December 30, 2011 by a score of 73-61.• Edinboro leads the PSAC in scoring at 95.2 points per game while ranking fourth in the conference with a rebounding margin of +7.8. The Fighting Scots also pace the league with a +6.40 turnover margin and a 1.89 assists-to-turnover ratio. Slippery Rock is the top rebounding team in the PSAC with a +11.3 rebounding margin. The Rock is outrebounding opponents by an average of 41.5-30.2 rebounds per game.
• Jaymon Mason was named the PSAC West Freshman of the Week for the week ending November 23. The 6'2'' redshirt freshman averaged 13.3 points and 3.0 rebounds in three games last week, largely in part to a career-high 23-point performance against California (Pa.). The Edinboro native tallied 12 markers in the Fighting Scots' win over Seton Hill Wednesday, sinking three of six field goals including two of two three-point attempts. The 6'2'' guard was a perfect four-for-four from the free throw line against the Griffins, as well. He added five points, four rebounds and three assists in Edinboro's season-opening triumph over Penn State Greater Allegheny. Mason ranks third on the team in scoring at 12.0 points per contest.
• Henri Wade-Chatman currently paces the conference in scoring at 19.4 points per game. He recorded a career-high 30-points in the Fighting Scots' 89-64 win over Seton Hill. The 6'2'' junior also tallied 20 points in just 21 minutes against Penn State Greater Allegheny. Wade-Chatman leads the conference with 3.6 three-point field goals per game, ranks sixth in the PSAC with a .500 three-point shooting percentage and is ninth in the conference with a .507 field goal percentage. Sheldon Brogdon is 11th in the conference in three-point field goal percentage at .414 and 10th in the league with 2.4 three-point field goals per game. Jaymon Mason sits eighth in the PSAC with an .840 free throw percentage. Tommy Scales is seventh in the PSAC in rebouding at 7.6 boards per contest, followed by Casey Baker at 18th in the conference at 6.6 rebounds per game. Baker recently surpassed 500 career rebounds in the Fighting Scots' 102-62 win over Penn State Greater Allegheny. The senior transfer from Urbana now has 524 career boards.
• The Fighting Scots posted a record-setting 144-61 victory over visitng Penn State DuBois in a non-conference game last Tuesday at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots' 144 points set a new school record for Edinboro, breaking the previous record of 133 markers set in a 133-90 victory over Lock Haven in 1967-68. The 83-point margin of victory snapped the previous Edinboro record of a 73-point margin, set in a 116-57 triumph over Point Park during the 1997-98 campaign. The Fighting Scots also connected on a school-record 60 field goals (60-94), breaking the previous mark of 54 field goals made. This feat was accomplished twice in both 1967-68 against Lock Haven and again in 1973-74 against Alliance. All 13 players scored for Edinboro and nine Fighting Scots scored in double-figures led by Quinn Lee Yaw's 19 points.
• The Fighting Scots will play the role of underdog this season, as Edinboro was picked to once again finish eighth in the PSAC West according to the 2014-15 PSAC Preseason Coaches' Poll released on October 30. California (Pa.), who earned a PSAC Championship Tournament berth last season, was picked to finish seventh in the division. Slippery Rock was chosen to finish fourth in the PSAC Western Division standings. The Rock finished fourth in the PSAC West last season with a 20-11 overall record and a 10-6 mark in conference play.
• Edinboro has a pair of PSAC West contests against Slippery Rock Wednesday and Mercyhurst on Saturday before a 10-day hiatus until the Fighting Scots' next contest. Edinboro then hosts Cheyney on December 16 and Millersville on December 17.
The Edinboro-Slippery Rock Series
Edinboro leads 86-79: The Fighting Scots hold an 86-79 advantage in the teams' all-time series dating back to the 1928-29 season. However, Slippery Rock has claimed nine out of the last 12 meetings between the two teams since the 2008-09 season, including the last three meetings. In 165 games between the teams, the Fighting Scots have faced Slippery Rock more than any other opponent with the exceptions of Indiana Pa. (165), Clarion (167), and California (Pa.) (169). Slippery Rock head coach Kevin Reynolds, a former Edinboro assistant coach, is 9-3 against the Fighting Scots since taking over in 2008.
The Coaches
Edinboro - Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) is in his second year as head coach of the Fighting Scots, leading Edinboro to a 13-18 record in that time. Cleary took over for his predecessor Greg Walcavich, who spent 24 years at the helm of the Edinboro program. Cleary previously worked as an assistant under Walcavich for 16 years, first as a student aide before becoming a full-time assistant coach. Cleary is credited for recruiting many of Edinboro's top contributors in recent years.
Slippery Rock - Kevin Reynolds (Bloomsburg '91) is in his seventh year as The Rock's head coach, showing a record of 121-63 during that time. Reynolds led the Rock to a 20-11 overall record last season and a 10-6 mark in PSAC West play, qualifying for the PSAC Championship Tournament. He is also a former assistant coach at Edinboro under Greg Walcavich. In 2008, Reynolds inherited a program that had not produced a winning season since the 1999-00 season. He guided The Rock to a 21-8 record in his first season and a PSAC semifinal berth. For his efforts, Reynolds was named the 2008-09 Pennsylvania State Athletics Conference Western Division Coach of the Year. Reynolds assumed the reigns of the Rock program after serving as an assistant coach at Morehead State, the Univ. of Denver, Penn State, Drake, Edinboro, and IUP.
