(February 15, 2014) – Anthony Lytle's layup as time expired lifted Mercyhurst over Edinboro by a score of 62-60 on Saturday afternoon at McComb Fieldhouse. The game marks the second time the Fighting Scots have lost at the buzzer this season after dropping a 95-93 decision to Seton Hill on a last second shot on December 4. Edinboro is also eliminated from PSAC Tournament contention with the defeat. The Fighting Scots drop to 2-11 in PSAC West play and 9-14 on the season, while the Lakers improve to 10-3 in the conference and 14-9 overall.
The contest also marked the second game this season between the two teams that came down to the wire. Mercyhurst needed overtime to defeat Edinboro on January 15, 77-65. The Lakers made a shot in the closing seconds of that game to send the contest into overtime, before scoring the first nine points of the bonus period en route to the victory.
In today's matchup, the Fighting Scots held a 58-57 advantage with 2:36 to play, before Jonathan Ouegnin made the first of two free throws to the game at 58 apiece.
Ouegnin missed the second free throw, but Terrence Ingram grabbed the miss, leading to a Callon Dailey jumper to give the Mercyhurst its first lead of the second half at 60-58 with 1:31 remaining.
After the teams' traded missed jumpers,
Bryan Theriot connected on a pair of free throws to tie the game at 60 with 27 seconds left in the contest.
Following a Mercyhurst timeout, Lytle's layup from the right block at the buzzer gave the Lakers their tenth PSAC West victory this season.
Theriot paced the Fighting Scots with 19 points, connecting on all 11 of his free throw attempts on the afternoon.
Xavier Churnac chipped in 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench, while
Henri Wade-Chatman dished out a game-high five assists with just one turnover for the Scots.
Lytle led the Lakers with 15 points on six of eight shooting for the day to go along with a game-high nine boards. Ouegnin followed with 11 markers.
Lytle, who previously played for Edinboro from 2009-11, tallied a team-high 15 points in the two teams' last meeting earlier this season.
The Lakers closed the game on a 12-2 run in the final 4:23.
Both Edinboro and Mercyhurst are no strangers to close games. Edinboro has lost at the buzzer twice and also twice in overtime this season, while having played in ten games decided by seven points or less. Unfortunately for the Scots, they are now 2-8 in these contests.
Edinboro has dropped seven PSAC games this season by seven points or less or in overtime. The Lakers have now been part of 15 contests decided by eight points or less, but Mercyhurst has come out on top in eight of these games. This also marks the tenth game in which the Lakers have won by scoring 70 points or less.
In the first half, Theriot nailed a jumper on an assist from Wade-Chatman to give the Fighting Scots their first lead of the game at 7-6 with 15:07 to play in the opening period.
Edinboro held its lead for the next 33 minutes, before Mercyhust tied the game with just under two minutes to play.
The Fighting Scots built their lead to as many seven in the first half on five occasions, but the Lakers cut the deficit to 32-29 heading into the locker room.
Holding a 45-39 lead with 11:15 remaining in the game, Edinboro used a 7-0 run sparked by an old-fashioned three-point play on a jumper by Churnac to take its largest lead of the night of 13, 52-39 with 8:18 showing in the clock.
The Lakers responded by outscoring the Fighting Scots 23-8 for the remainder of the contest.
Mercyhurst outshot Edinboro 46.2 percent (24 of 52) to 38.3 percent (18 of 47). Both teams made only a combined five 3-pointers on the afternoon.
The Fighting Scots made 21 of 24 (.875) shots from the charity stripe, while the Lakers drained 12 of 17 (.706) free throws for the game.
Mercyhurst won the battle on the glass, pulling down 34 rebounds compared to Edinboro's 27 boards. 10 of the Lakers' 34 rebounds were on the offensive glass.
The Fighting Scots next travel to Slippery Rock on Wednesday, February 19. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. against the Rock.
