Fighting Scots Drop PSAC West Matchup at 12th-Ranked IUP, 78-65

(February 22, 2014) – Edinboro fell victim to a strong Indiana (Pa.) second half, as the No. 12 Crimson Hawks claimed a 78-65 victory over the Scots on Saturday night in a PSAC West contest at the Kovalchick Complex in Indiana, PA. Edinboro moves to 2-13 on the season and 2-13 in PSAC West play, while IUP improves to 22-3 and 12-3 in the conference.

The contest was shaping up to be yet another close game between these two teams, as the score was knotted at 37 at the break. The last two meetings were decided by a total of five points, with the Crimson Hawks coming out on top in both games.

The first half saw 16 lead changes and six ties, with neither team leading by more than five points.  

Edinboro opened the second half with four straight points to match its largest lead of the game at 41-37 on a Xavier Churnac layup.
IUP responded with an 18-4 run to gain a 55-45 advantage with 12 minutes to play, capped off by Marcel Souberbielle basket.

The Fighting Scots could not come any closer than eight points from that point on, as the Crimson Hawks held a double-digit lead for most of the remainder of the contest en route to the victory.

Edinboro minimized the IUP advantage 68-60 with 4:24 to play, but the Crimson Hawks extended their lead to as many as 15 with 19 seconds left in the game.

Henri Wade-Chatman paced Edinboro with 22 points, shooting 5 of 11 from the field and 10 of 15 from the free throw line. Churnac was the only other Fighting Scot in double figures with 10 points. Jonny Marsh and Johnathan Logan each dropped in nine points.

Bryan Theriot pulled down a game-high seven rebounds, but was held under ten points for just the second time this season with eight markers. The Fighting Scots' leading scorer attempted just one shot in the second half.  He failed to reach double-figures in the first meeting with IUP, as well, scoring five points.

Marcel Souberbielle led all scorers with 27 points for the Crimson Hawks, knocking down 10 of 15 shots from the floor. Jeremy Jeffers and Devante Chance added 14 and 10 points, respectively.  

IUP scored 50 of its 78 points in the paint, compared to the Fighting Scots' 24 points down low.

The Crimson Hawks dished out 23 assists as a team on 31 made field goals, led by eight assists apiece from Chance and Mathis Keita.

Edinboro shot 46.8 percent (22 of 47) from the floor, while IUP made 50.0 percent (31 of 62) of its field goal attempts on the night.

Edinboro edged IUP in the rebounding column by a total of 30-29 rebounds. The Crimson Hawks pulled down 11 offensive boards, leading to a 17-9 advantage in second chance points.

IUP garnered 18 points off 15 Fighting Scot turnovers, while Edinboro scored five points off eight Crimson Hawk miscues.

The Fighting Scots close the 2013-14 campaign hosting Clarion on Wednesday, February 26. Edinboro's six seniors will be recognized prior to the game. The matchup with the Golden Eagles is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
