Wade-Chatman’s Late Jumper Lifts Edinboro Over Cal, 69-67

(February 8, 2014) - Henri Wade-Chatman connected on a pull-up jumper from the right corner with 3.1 seconds remaining in the game to give Edinboro a 69-67 PSAC West victory over visiting California (Pa.) on Saturday night at McComb Fieldhouse. Tynell Fortune's half-court heave at the buzzer was off the mark. Edinboro rallied from behind after trailing by as many as 18 in the contest. The Fighting Scots improve to 2-9 in PSAC West play and 9-12 overall, while the Vulcans drop to 4-8 in the conference and 9-13 on the season.

Bryan Theriot notched his sixth double-double of the season.
Trailing by 11 midway through the second half, Edinboro used a 14-2 run to take its first lead of the game at 56-55 keyed by seven points from Xavier Churnac with 5:20 left in the half. Churnac capped the run with a three-pointer and a steal leading to a dunkon the other end.

After Wade-Chatman hit a jumper to give the Scots a 58-55 lead, Jake Jacubec's three-pointer knotted the game at 58 with just over four minutes to play.

Will Marrow answered with a three-pointer of his own and Theriot connected on a layup to put Edinboro on top by five, 63-58 with 2:55 left in the contest.

The Fighting Scots held a five-point advantage on two more occasions, thelast coming with 1:15 remaining.

Arman Marks sank a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to two, before Churnac missed an alley-oop attempt on the other end, giving California the ball with a chance to tie the game.

Chris Williams did just that, nailing a three-pointer with 17 seconds showing on the clock to knot the game at 67 apiece, before Wade-Chatman dropped in the game-winning jumper on the other end for the Scots.

Theriot recorded his sixth double-double of the season with game-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds. He shot 9 of 14 from the field on the night.
Theriot moved into 17th place in Edinboro history with 641 career rebounds, passing Frank Smith (1965-69), who pulled down 637 boards in his career. The 6'9'' senior ranks 13th in career points with 1,278 markers.

Wade-Chatman poured in 17 points on six of nine shooting, while Alex Moore added 12 markers, shooting five of six from the field. Churnac contributed nine points and five boards off the bench.

Alonzo Murphy and Jake Jacubec paced the Vulcans with 12 points each, and Fortune scored 10 points off the bench.

The Vulcans jumped out to an early 17-8 first half lead when Jacubec hit a three-pointer at the 14:14 mark of the opening period.

California then constructed a 14-5 run to take its largest lead of the night of 18 points, 31-13 with 6:23 to play in the half.

The Fighting Scots responded with an 8-0 run, capped by a Theriot jumper at the 2:50 mark to cut the Vulcan lead to nine, 31-22.

On the next Edinboro possession, Moore hit a three-pointer to shrink the lead to six, 31-25 with 1:47 to play, before California scored the final four points of the half to take a 35-25 halftime lead.

The Fighting Scots outshot the Vulcans, 54.9 percent (28 of 51) to 45.9 percent (28 of 61) for the game. Edinboro shot 63.0 percent for the second half, connecting on five of eight attempts from behind the arc.

The Fighting Scots bested California in the rebounding column, 31-27 on the night.

California outscored the Fighting Scots in the paint in the opening half, 24-10, before Edinboro won the battle down low in the second half, 20-6.

The Fighting Scots now travel to Gannon on Wednesday, February 12. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. against the Golden Knights.
