CHARLESTON, Wv. (March 10, 2014) – The Edinboro softball team opened the 2014 campaign with a pair of losses to host Charleston (WV) by identical scores of 9-1 on Monday afternoon in Charleston, WV. The Fighting Scots move to 0-2 after their first action of the season, while the Golden Eagles boost their record to 10-3, now having won nine straight games.  

In the first game, Charleston jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the third inning after a Fighting Scot error. The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning when Katelyn Hamilton and Andrea Haynes each drove in runs.

After being held hitless through the first five frames, Haley Struebing delivered a pinch-hit RBI double in the top of the sixth inning, scoring Brenna Cosgrove from second base. Cosgrove led off the inning with a base hit before stealing second, allowing Struebing to drive her in from scoring position.

Charleston tacked on five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn the 9-1 victory.

Samantha Weaver (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Fighting Scots in her first career game. The freshmen went 5.2 innings, allowing eight runs (four earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and just one walk.

Streubing (1 for 1) and Cosgrove (1 for 3) collected Edinboro's only hits in the contest.

Courtney Fein (5-1) earned the win for the Golden Eagles, tossing all six innings, while surrendering one run on two hits, fanning 14 batters with one walk.

In the nightcap, Charleston gained a 6-0 advantage with three runs in each of the first two innings. Hamilton singled to bring in another run in the bottom of the third to give the Golden Eagles a 7-0 lead after three innings.

Taylor Payne got the Fighting Scots on the board in the top of the fourth inning, cracking her first career homerun to cut the Charleston lead to 7-1.

The Golden Eagles answered with a run in each of the final two innings, completing the sweep with a five-inning victory.

Kalet Lenart took the loss in the circle for Edinboro, throwing all 4.2 innings and allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits in her first career game with the Scots.

Laura Crooks (1 for 3) and Struebing (1 for 2) each posted hits for Edinboro to go along with Payne's (1 for 1) homerun.

Morgan Aguirre (4-2) picked up the win for Charleston, scattering three hits and striking out nine over four innings with two walks.

Edinboro next travels to Salem, VA for its spring break trip. The Fighting Scots return to action on Friday, March 14, facing Le Moyne at 1 p.m. and Wheeling Jesuit at 3 p.m. in Salem.
