Edinboro Collects First Win of the Season over Wheeling Jesuit, Falls to Le Moyne

Haley Struebing went 4 for 6 on the day with a homerun, double and 4 RBI.

(March 14, 2014) – The Fighting Scot softball team opened its spring break trip by splitting a pair of games on Friday afternoon at the Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, VA. Edinboro fell to Le Moyne by a score of 14-3 in the early game, before the Scots earned their first victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Wheeling Jesuit in the nightcap. Edinboro moves to 1-3 on the season, while Le Moyne improves to 3-2 and Wheeling Jesuit falls to 3-9 on the year.

In the ladder game, Wheeling Jesuit struck first with a run in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.

After scoreless third and fourth innings, the Fighting Scot offense came alive, as Haley Struebing blasted a two-run homerun to left-center field to give Edinboro a 2-1 lead. The four-bagger scored Brooke Callaghan, who singled earlier in the inning.

The Fighting Scots tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Strubeing answered the bell again. The sophomore belted an RBI double to put Edinboro on top 3-1. Taylor Payne scored on the play after notching a lead-off double to start the inning.

Kalet Lenart mowed down three straight batters in the top of the seventh inning, capping her first career victory and the Fighting Scots' first win of the season.

Lenart (1-1) tossed a complete game of seven innings, allowing just one run on eight hits. The freshman struck out four while walking three and stranding 10 Cardinal runners on the day.

Strubeing led the Edinboro offense going 2 for 3 with all three of the Fighting Scot RBI. Payne and TL Wreh-Wilson also collected doubles in the game for Edinboro.  

Ali Smith (0-3) was saddled with the loss for Wheeling Jesuit, throwing five innings while allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

In the first game, Struebing got the Fighting Scots on the board early with an RBI single in the first inning, scoring Cosgrove from third. Brenna Cosgrove led off the game with a single before swiping second.

Le Moyne answered with three runs apiece in both the second and third innings. Along with the help of two Edinboro errors, the Dolphins were sparked by six base hits in the two innings.

Trailing 6-1 after, the Fighting Scots responded with two runs of their own in the top of the third as Tighe and Korpus each walked with the bases loaded, scoring Callaghan and Struebing, respectively.

Le Moyne kept a strong offensive day going with four more runs in the third inning before plating four runs in the fourth to earn a 14-3 victory.

Samantha Weaver (0-2) took the loss for the Fighting Scots, tossing all four innings and allowing 14 runs on 16 hits. 
Brenna Cosgrove vs. Wheeling Jesuit

Sarah Harrison picked up the win for the Dolphins, throwing five innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Harrison struck out eight while walking five.

Struebing paced Edinboro at the plate, going 2 for 3 with an RBI.

The Fighting Scots return right back to action tomorrow with another pair of games. Edinboro takes on Concord at 3 p.m., before facing Ohio Valley at 5 p.m. in Salem, VA.
