Tim Flynn Named NCAA Division I Coach of the Year

Tim Flynn
OKLAHOMA CITY, Ok. (March 23, 2014) – Late Saturday night the rest of the collegiate wrestling word realized what Edinboro wrestling fans have known for years – Tim Flynn is one of the best wrestling coaches in the country. The 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships wrapped up at the Chesapeake Energy Arena with Penn State winning its fourth straight championship, Nittany Lion David Taylor recognized as the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament, and Edinboro's Tim Flynn selected the NCAA Division I Coach of the Year.

"It's nice to be honored by your peers," related Flynn. "It should be a staff award because I certainly can't do this alone. Colt (Sponseller) and Cliff (Moore) are awesome to work with.  Our team definitely wouldn't be where we are without Cliff. He is one of the finest young coaches in the country. We are fortunate to have great kids to work with."

For Flynn and his staff it caps possibly the top season in school history. The Fighting Scots posted their top season ever at the Division I Nationals, placing fifth with a total of 62 points.  The leader board at the end of the finals read:  1. Penn State (109.5 points); 2. Minnesota (104); 3. Oklahoma State (96.5); 4. Iowa (78.5); 5. EDINBORO (62).

Edinboro's previous top finishes had been a pair of sixth places in 2009 and 1997. The Fighting Scots came home with three All-Americans, as Mitchell Port took third place at 141 lbs. and A.J. Schopp and Dave Habat were fourth at 133 and 149 lbs., respectively.  That ties the school record for All-Americans in a season and gives Flynn 33 All-Americans in his 17 seasons.  It marked the first time with three All-Americans since 2009.  Seven Edinboro wrestlers qualified for Nationals, and all seven won at least a match.
In addition, the Fighting Scots won their first Eastern Wrestling League championship since 2010.  It marked the 13th for Edinboro in Flynn's 17 years, and Edinboro also won its third straight PSAC championship and 14th in his tenure.

Edinboro ended the year with an 11-3 record, winning 10 of its last 11 duals. That included a 17-16 win over Pittsburgh, who was ranked sixth at the time, marking the second straight year the Fighting Scots have knocked off a top ten team.   They lost a narrow 22-19 match to then top-ranked Iowa, with the other losses to eighth-ranked Virginia Tech (23-14) and 13th-ranked Virginia (20-19). The latter match came in the finals of the Virginia Duals after Edinboro had avenged its loss to Virginia Tech with a 23-9 win in the semifinals.  The Scots also had wins over nationally-ranked Rider (27-9) and Old Dominion (17-16).

Flynn concludes his 17th campaign with a 184-68-5 career record, holding the school record for victories. He has now led Edinboro to four top ten finishes at Nationals and 11 top 20 finishes.
