Edinboro Drops Opening PSAC Doubleheader at California (PA)

(April 2, 2014) – The Fighting Scot softball team surrendered a pair of games at PSAC West foe California (Pa.) on Wednesday afternoon in by scores of 12-1 and 11-2 in Edinboro's conference opening twinbill. The Fighting Scots took the field for the first time in 13 days, as poor weather conditions have forced the postponement of several conference contests. Edinboro falls to 5-9 on the season and 0-2 in PSAC West play, while the Vulcans improve to 11-4 and 4-0 in the conference.

In the first game, California jumped out to a 12-0 lead after three innings, plating two runs in the first inning and seven in the second, before adding three more scores in the third frame.

Brooke Callaghan belted her second homerun of the season to center field in the fifth inning to get the Fighting Scots on the board, but the Vulcans held on for the 12-1 victory.
Callaghan went 1-for-2 at the plate, while Shelby Proctor (1-for-2) and Courtney Korpus (1-for-2) each added a base knock in the contest.

Kalet Lenart suffered the loss for Edinboro, falling to 3-4 on the season. Lenart allowed nine runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk in 1.2 innings pitched.  
Abby Sotter tossed the final 2.1 frames for the Scots, allowing three runs on four hits. Sotter struck out one batter and walked one.


Alex Sagl earned the win in the circle for the Vulcans to improve to 7-2 on the year. Sagl threw four shutout innings on one hit, while fanning 10 batters with no walks.
In the second half of the twinbill, California used five hits in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.

Haley Struebing answered with a two-run homerun in the third inning, her third of the season, cutting the Vulcan lead to 3-2.

However, California responded with four runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to earn the 11-2 triumph and sweep.

Brenna Cosgrove collected a pair of hits in three at-bats and a run for the Fighting Scots, while Katie Holmes added a base hit and finished 1-for-2 in the contest.

Struebing went 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. Struebing paces Edinboro with 11 RBI on the season.

Samantha Weaver was saddled with the loss for the Scots, allowing three runs on five hits.

Claire Johnston worked 3.1 innings of relief and allowed four runs on seven hits, while striking out one batter and walking two. Lenart closed the game for Edinboro, allowing four ones (one earned) on six hits in two innings of work. Lenart fanned two and walked three batters.

Kaity Davis collected the victory for California, tossing all six innings and allowing four runs on five hits. Davis struck out four and walked one.

The Fighting Scots travel to Gannon on Friday, April 4 for a doubleheader against the Golden Knights. Game one is slated to start at 2:30 p.m. in Erie, PA.
