(April 21, 2014) – The Edinboro softball team overcame an early six-run deficit to earn a 10-6 victory over visiting Mercyhurst in the first half of a PSAC West twinbill on Monday afternoon in Edinboro. The second game of the doubleheader ended in a 4-4 tie after the game was called after five innings of play due to darkness. Edinboro improves to 15-18-1 on the season and 10-11-1 in PSAC West play, while the Lakers fall to 13-24-1 and 7-14-1 in the conference.
Mercyhurst used seven hits and took advantage of four Edinboro errors to plate six runs in the top of the second inning and take a 6-0 lead.
Edinboro got on the board in the bottom of the third when
Brenna Cosgrove knocked an RBI single up the middle, followed by a
Laura Crooks RBI bunt single to cut the Laker lead to 6-2. Two batters later,
Heather Tighe delivered a two-run single, scoring both Cooks and Cosgrove and minimizing the Mercyhurst advantage to 6-4.
The Fighting Scots added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Jessica Hyland singled through the left side to cut the deficit to one run at 6-5.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Cosgrove evened the score at 6-6 in the sixth inning, stealing second base and scoring on a throwing error by the Mercyhurst catcher.
A few batters later,
Haley Struebing gave the Fighting Scots their first lead of the game at 7-6 with an RBI single up the middle. Tighe followed with another base hit through the right side, scoring Struebing and putting Edinboro ahead 8-6.
Hyland tacked on two more runs with a single to center field later in the inning, giving the Fighting Scots a 10-6 lead.

Claire Johnston retired the Lakers in order in the top of the seventh inning, sealing the win for the Scots.
Johnston (3-4) earned the win, working 5.1 shutout innings of relief, allowing four hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Annie Truelove (7-13) suffered the loss for the Lakers, tossing a complete game and allowing 10 runs on 14 hits. She struck out three batters and walked four.
Hyland, Cosgrove, and Crooks all turned in 3-for-4 performances at the plate, with Hyland driving in three runs. Tighe finished the game at 2-for-3 with three RBI, as well.
Game TwoAfter Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning,
Shelby Proctor knotted the game at 1-1 with an RBI single through the right side in the bottom of the frame.
Hyland followed Proctor with a two-run single to right field, giving Edinboro a 3-1 lead.
Kylie Mason delivered a two-out triple in the next at-bat, scoring Hyland and extending the Fighting Scot lead to 4-1.
The Lakers responded with three runs in the top of the second inning to even the score at 4-4. Edinboro pitcher
Kalet Lenart stranded three Mercyhurst runners to end the frame and prevented significant damage.
The two teams could not get much going offensively from that point on, combining for just three hits through the next three scoreless innings.
With the score deadlocked at 4-4 after five innings, the Lakers pushed across two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-4 lead. However, the game was called because of darkness, and reverted back to the end of the fifth inning, resulting in a 4-4 tie.
Proctor (1-for-3), Hyland (1-for-2) and Mason (1-for-2) each drove in a run in the contest.
Kalet Lentart worked all five innings for Edinboro in the circle, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits. Lenart fanned six batters and walked four.
Alex Puckly allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings of work for Mercyhurst. She struck out four and walked none.
The Fighting Scots return to action on Thursday, April 24 hosting Slippery Rock for a PSAC West doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at 2:30 in Edinboro.
