(April 28, 2014) – The Edinboro softball team fell twice to visiting Gannon in a PSAC doubleheader on Monday afternoon in Edinboro, but with California (Pa.)'s 16-1 victory over Slippery Rock, the Fighting Scots clinched the fourth and final spot from the Western Division in the upcoming PSAC Championships. Edinboro earns a postseason berth for the first time since the 2010 campaign. The Fighting Scots dropped Monday's games by scores of 4-0 and 9-3.
Edinboro moves to 17-22-1 overall and 12-15-1 in the PSAC West, while the Lady Knights improved to 23-19 and 16-12 in the conference.
Two Fighting Scot seniors,
quieted the Gannon bats for the remainder of the game, tossing 5.1 innings of scoreless relief. Johnston allowed four hits and a walk.
Kalet Lenart (9-9) suffered the loss for the Fighting Scots, allowing four runs (three earned) in 1.2 innings of work.
Olivia Gumbita (7-5) earned the complete game shutout victory for Gannon, allowing four hits while fanning six and walking none.
Cosgrove went 2-for-3 at the plate to pace Edinboro.
Game Two – Gannon 9, Edinboro 2
Gannon jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, before
Brooke Callaghan's RBI single in the bottom of the frame scored Cosgrove to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Lady Knights would tack on two runs in the top of the second to take a 4-1 lead.
TL Wreh-Wilson delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the third, scoring Cosgrove once again and shrinking the Gannon lead to 4-2.
The Lady Knights responded with five unanswered runs to take a 9-2 lead in the sixth, before the Fighting Scots pushed across a run in the bottom of the inning when
Heather Tighe scored on a Gannon error.
Cosgrove notched two base-hits in four at-bats, finishing the day 4-for-7 at the plate. The center fielder also added two stolen bases and two runs scored.
TL Wreh-Wilson went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while
Brooke Callaghan drove in a run, as well.
Samantha Weaver (3-9) was tagged with the loss for the Fighting Scots, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits in three innings of work.
Alison Benz (4-7) picked up the complete game win for Gannon, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits. She also struck out five batters and walked one.
