Sixth Inning Rally Helps Edinboro Earn PSAC Split at Gannon

(April 6, 2014) – The Edinboro softball team split a PSAC doubleheader at local-rival Gannon on Sunday evening in Erie, PA. The Fighting Scots exploded for an eight-run sixth inning to win the first game by a score of 12-5, before dropping the second half of the twinbill 9-1. Edinboro moves to 6-10 on the season and 1-3 in the PSAC, while the Golden Knights are 9-11 and 2-4 in conference play.
 
Brooke Callaghan vs. Wheeling

In game one, with Gannon holding a 5-4 lead after the fifth inning, Kylie Mason's RBI single brought in Haley Struebing from third base, evening the score at 5-5.

On the next at-bat, Heather Tighe drove in Brooke Callaghan with a fielder's choice, giving the Fighting Scots a 6-5 lead.

After a Golden Knight pitching change, Edinboro sent two more runs across the plate on a pair of  Gannon wild pitches, as both Mason and Tighe scored to give Edinboro an 8-5 lead.

Brenna Cosgrove followed with a single to load the bases, before TL Wreh-Wilson belted a pinch-hit grand slam to right center field, to put the Fighting Scots on top 12-5.  

The Fighting Scots plated eight runs in the sixth inning before recording a single out.

Claire Johnston retired all six Golden Knight batters in order to close the game and seal the victory for Edinboro.

Edinboro tallied nine hits as a team, paced by Callaghan's 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Wreh-Wilson accounted for 4 RBI with her second career homerun and first career grand slam.

Tighe also added two RBI in the game, while Struebing scored three runs.

Johnston earned her second victory of the season in the circle, working 2.1 shutout innings, allowing just one hit.

Kalet Lenart started the game for Edinboro, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing five runs on six hits, with two strikeouts and four walks.

Alison Benz (3-6) was saddled with the loss for Gannon, surrendering three runs  on two hits without recording an out.

The Golden Knights struck first with a run in the first inning, before Tighe's RBI single up the middle in the second frame scored Struebing to knot the game at 1-1.  

Mary Louise Lindner got things started for the Fighting Scot offense in the top of the third inning, knocking a leadoff double down the right field line, before stealing third base during the next at-bat.

Cosgrove drove Lindner in from third on an error to give Edinboro a 2-1 advantage.

Shelby Proctor followed with a double to right-center field, bringing in Cosgrove to extend the Fighting Scot lead to 3-1.

Two batters later, Callaghan widened the Edinboro advantage to 4-1 with an RBI double to right-center field.

The Golden Knights answered with two runs in the bottom of the third and two more scores in the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead.

In game two of the PSAC twinbill, the Golden Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings, limiting the Fighting Scots to just two hits through four frames.

Mason got Edinboro on the board in the fifth inning with her first career homerun, cutting the Gannon lead to 4-1.

That was the only run the Fighting Scots could push across, however, as the Golden Knights plated two in the fifth inning and three in the sixth inning to pick up the 9-1 triumph.

Struebing led the Fighting Scots with her sixth multi-hit game of the season, going 3-for-3 at the dish. Mason finished the game 1-for-3 and an RBI after the homerun.

Johnston (2-1) suffered the loss for Edinboro, her first of the season, tossing four innings. She allowed six runs (four earned) on four hits.

Olivia Gumbita earned the victory for the Golden Knights, working all six innings, allowing one run on six hits. Gumbita fanned five and walked one.

The Fighting Scots return right back to action tomorrow, traveling to Slippery Rock for a doubleheader. The first game is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m. against The Rock.
