Wayne Bradford. In the end the Fighting Scots fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in PSAC action with the loss in the home opener, marking the first time an Edinboro team has been 0-3 since 1995. East Stroudsburg improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC.
Anfreenee Williams takes off on a 44-yard run.The game featured over 1,000 yards in total offense, with East Stroudsburg totaling 590 yards, tied for the fourth-highest total ever against Edinboro. Edinboro finished with a season-high 448 yards in total offense. ESU quarterback Matt Soltes accounting for 532 total yards, a record by an Edinboro opponent. West Liberty's Zach Amedro held the previous record of 527 yard in 2009. It was the 14th 500-yard game all-time in the PSAC.
Soltes time-and-again burned the young Edinboro secondary, as the junior completed 31 of 45 passes for 502 yards with 6 TDs. His favorite target was Dusty Reed, the same player who victimized Edinboro for the winning touchdown in the last meeting between the two teams in 2011. The senior wide receiver hauled in 9 passes for 170 yards and 4 TDs. Robert Healy added 8 catches for 98 yards and a score and Jon Schnaars had 7 receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown.
Edinboro's
Cody Harris was no slouch, as he completed 26 of 37 passes for 268 yards with 4 TDs, adding 28 yards on 13 rushes and a fifth score. The senior threw for at least four touchdowns for the sixth time in his career while moving into second place in career touchdown passes with 64.
Darren Massey became the first player in Edinboro history to record back-to-back 10 receptions games as he caught 10 passes for 103 yards and 3 TDs. A week ago the sophomore had 11 receptions for 161 yards.
Nick Helmick added 6 catches for 55 yards and a touchdown.
After managing just 117 rushing yards combined in the first two games the Boro rode a strong effort from freshman
Anfreenee Williams to finish with 180 yards on the ground. Williams, a native of Georgia, ran for 139 yards on 18 carries and returned three kickoffs for 41 yards to give him 180 all-purpose yards.
Darren Massey caught three touchdown passes. The game got off to a horrific start for Edinboro, as the Fighting Scots trailed 20-7 after one quarter. The Warriors gained 214 yards in the first 15 minutes alone, as Soltes directed scoring drives of 75, 75, and 78 yards.
He opened the scoring on the first possession of the game with a 31-yard pass to Schnaars. Matt Smith's extra point was wide to the left. ESU also scored on its second possession as Soltes and Reed hooked up for the first of their four scores, this one covering seven yards. Seven minutes into the game East Stroudsburg led 13-0.
Edinboro responded with a six-play, 73-yard drive keyed by a 44-yard run by Williams on the second play. His burst carried down to the ESU 9. On 4th-and-goal Edinboro scored on a four-yard pass from Harris to Massey.
Back came East Stroudsburg once again, marching 78 yards on 11 plays to take a 20-7 lead with 15 seconds remaining in the quarter. The Warriors were able to convert on 3rd-and-31 as Soltes found Schnaars for 27 yards to make it 4th-and-4, then the ESU signalcaller hooked up with Gerald Wendowski for 20 yards for a first down at the Edinboro 7. Three plays later he found Reed for a three yard touchdown.
Edinboro would rally in the second quarter for a pair of scores as the defense settled down, taking its lone lead of the game at 21-10 late in the period. The first six-pointer came on a one-yard pass from Harris to Helmick with 13:05 left in the second quarter. It came three plays after Williams had his second 44-yard run of the game, as he was called down at the ESU two yard line.
East Stroudsburg came back on its next possession to reach the Edinboro 14 before the defense rose up.
Corey Beck threw Derrick Dyer for a three-yard loss and Soltes' third down pass was incomplete. Smith's 34-yard field goal attempt was wide left.

Kolbe Hughes moved the Scots to the 21. On the next play he combined with Massey for a nine-yard completion, and an ESU personal found moved the ball to the six. On the next play he scrambled in for a six-yard TD run, hurdling a Warrior defender inside the five.
Paul Ortiz' extra point gave the Scots a 21-20 advantage with 1:33 to play.
The Boro defense held East Stroudsburg to a three-and-out on the next possession, and the Scots took over at their own 12 with 58 seconds left in the half. Edinboro would gain one first down but was forced to punt following an incompletion, a run, and another incompletion.
ESU took over at its own 43 yard line with 27 seconds left. Soltes' first down pass fell incomplete, but on second down he found Healy streaking down the middle of the field with a coverage breakdown. The 57-yard touchdown pass gave the Warriors a 27-21 lead with 14 seconds to play in the half.
The third quarter saw an exchange of three straight punts before East Stroudsburg took over at its own 11 yard line. It took just six plays to cover the 89 yards, keyed by a 36-yard completion to Reed. The duo hooked up on a 20-yard scoring play moments later to build the lead to 34-21 with 9:23 left in the third period.
Edinboro answered with its own six play march, this one covering 62 yards. The final 28 came on a brilliant hookup between Harris and Massey, with Massey making a great leaping catch for the touchdown. Edinboro had closed to 34-27 with 6:44 left, but Ortiz' PAT was blocked.
The Fighting Scots forced another three-and-out with their longest drive of the year, a 15-play, 66-yarder that took up 6 minutes, 51 seconds. Along the way they converted twice on fourth down. A 24-yard pass from Harris to Helmick gave the Scots a first down at the ESU one, and after Williams lost a yard on first down, Harris and Massey combined for their third touchdown pass, this time from two yards out with 13:58 left in the game. Ortiz was true on the extra point this time, tying the game at 34-34.
Unfortunately, the tie didn't last long, as Soltes completed passes of 36 yards to Dyer and 22 yards to Reed, leading to the game-winning touchdown, a three-yard run by Healy.
Jim Wilson blocked Smith's extra point leaving the score 40-34 with 12:16 to play.
Edinboro looked primed to regain the lead after
O'Sha Jackson returned the kickoff 15 yards and the Warriors were hit with another 15 yards for a personal foul. Harris led the Scots on a nine-play drive that saw them with a 1st-and-10 from the 15. Williams carried twice for six yards, and Nick hall followed with a one-yard run. On 4th-and-3 from the ESU 8 Harris' pass for Massey at the three fell just short.
ESU took over with seven minutes left at the eight and proceeded to run off six plays of 10-or-more yards to reach the 38 with just under a minute to play. Facing 4th-and 5, Soltes found Reed streaking down the right sideline for the clinching 30-yard touchdown pass with 46 seconds to play.
Edinboro must now try to regroup while once again hitting the highways. The Fighting Scots will meet their first PSAC West opponent on Saturday, September 27 playing at California(Pa.). The Vulcans improved to 2-1 with a 56-34 win over a Shippensburg team which defeated the Fighting Scots 47-21 a week ago.
BORO NOTES: Matt Soltes -- 502 yards passing represents the seventh-highest total at ESU … Edinboro has allowed 132 points in its first three games, the most points allowed in the first three games since 1928, the third year of recognized football at Edinboro. That team allowed 133 yards the first three games … Edinboro has allowed 47 points in each of last two games, marking the first time since 1987 giving up back-to-back 40-point games.
