The Game Story
The Edinboro men's basketball team eyes a perfect 3-0 start to the season this weekend with a pair of home matches against Kutztown on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Mansfield on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse.
 
The Fighting Scots enter this weekend with a 1-0 record, defeating Slippery Rock on Wednesday, 80-74, snapping a six-game losing streak against The Rock. Senior guard and first team All-PSAC selection Henri Wade-Chatman dropped 17 points with nine rebounds while senior center Tommy Scales scored 15 points and collected nine boards. Redshirt sophomore forward and PSAC West Freshman of the Year Jaymon Mason had 14 points and was 2-for-5 from behind the arc. Edinboro was ranked third in the PSAC West preseason poll.
 
Kutztown comes to Edinboro with a 2-0 overall record and a 1-0 PSAC record, defeating SUNY – ESF on Saturday, 120-54, and taking down Cheyney on Wednesday, 105-83. Junior forward Josh Johnson leads the Golden Bears with 18.5 points per game and 20 rebounds. Kutztown was tied for second in the PSAC East preseason poll.
 
Mansfield is currently 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the PSAC, recently losing to Millersville on Wednesday, 64-53. Sophomore forward Matt Tamanowsky leads the Mounties with 15.3 points per game and 28 rebounds. Mansfield was ranked eighth in the PSAC East preseason poll.
 
On the Radio
Both games will be broadcast on WFSE 88.9. The Edinboro-Mansfield broadcast is subject to a delay in the event of Edinboro women's soccer advancing to the Elite Eight. If so, the women's soccer game will be broadcast, then will switch over to the basketball broadcast at the conclusion of that game.
 
All-Time Series
Edinboro leads Kutztown, 14-5
Edinboro is 14-5 against Kutztown dating back to the 1930-31 season. The Fighting Scots are 1-4 in their last five meetings with the Golden Bears, with their last win coming on January 11, 2013.
 
Edinboro leads Mansfield, 20-15
Edinboro had won five consecutive matches against Mansfield before the Mounties defeated the Fighting Scots last season. Their all-time series dates back to the 1950-51 season.
 
Last Time Out
11/18/15 – Edinboro 80, Slippery Rock 74
The Fighting Scots trailed 35-30 at the half as they shot just 30.0 percent from the floor while SRU hit at a 50.0 percent clip. The Rock would still hold a 40-35 lead early in the second half when Edinboro went on a 13-2 run to take a 48-42 lead with 11:53 to play. Edinboro would push the lead to 13 points at 59-46 with 8:34 to play thanks to a bench that outscored SRU, 25-3. Edinboro was 26-of-39 at the line, with all but three of those attempts coming in the second half. Edinboro still held a ten-point lead at 76-66 with 47 seconds to play when Slippery Rock made one final run. While SRU would score on Cornelius Brown's layup and make 3-of-5 free throws over the next 18 seconds, Edinboro went one-for-two at the line as The Rock pulled to 76-71 with 29 ticks remaining. Tommy Scales would miss a pair of free throws, but following an SRU turnover, Jaymon Mason drained two free throws and forced another turnover which led to a Henri Wade-Chatman free throw as the Scots held off the Rock. Wade-Chatman led three players in double figures as the senior guard dropped in 17 points while pulling down a team-high 9 rebounds. He was 9-for-11 at the line. Scales had an impressive night, as the 6'8" senior had 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting, adding 9 rebounds. He would go just 1-for-7 at the line.  Mason contributed 14 points. Head and Anderson led the bench brigade, as the junior college transfers had eight points apiece in their Edinboro debuts.
 
11/18/15 – Kutztown 105, Cheyney 83
Five players scored in double figures for Kutztown. Junior Josh Johnson posted his first double-double of the season with 23 points and 11 rebounds on an effective 10-for-15 shooting. Freshman Dan Cuevas played well in his first career start with 16 points and eight rebounds in 18 minutes. Sophomore guard Ethan Ridgeway had 14 points and a game-high six assists, and Ryan Connolly and Howard Sellars scored in double figures with 12 apiece. Kutztown shot 5-of-13 from beyond the arc on Wednesday, including two apiece from Connolly and Sellars. They were 34-for-44 from the free throw line.
 
11/18/15 – Millersville 64, Mansfield 53
Matt Tamanosky hit 7-of-10 shots from the floor and grabbed 10 boards to lead Mansfield in a gutsy effort. Eric Lewis Jr. recorded 11 points with Da'Quan Jones adding 10 points and nine boards. The Mountaineers gave up an early lead but stayed within two possessions the entire first half. Mansfield went into halftime trailing by just two points at 29-27. In the second half, Mansfield tied the game twice but was never able to take over the lead. The Mountaineers trailed by just six points with 3:59 to play, but Millersville built its lead over the final minutes to hold on for the PSAC East victory.
 
The Last Meetings
1/3/15 – Kutztown 73, Edinboro 71
After a Tyler Brooks dunk gave the Golden Bears a 10-point lead at 70-60 with 1:02 to play in the game, the Fighting Scots mounted their comeback attempt. Jaymon Mason knocked down a 3-pointer just four seconds later, cutting the deficit to seven points with 58 seconds remaining. A Casey Baker layup shrunk the Kutztown lead to six at 71-65 with 18 seconds remaining. Sheldon Brogdon converted a 3-pointer with seven seconds to go, minimizing the Kutztown advantage to 72-68. The Fighting Scots would foul instantly, sending Golden Bears' leading scorer Tynell Fortune to the free throw line for two shots, where the senior guard would make one of two shots to give Kutztown a 73-68 lead with seven seconds to play. Brogdon drained another 3-pointer, but with just one second showing on the clock, as the Fighting Scots' late rally fell just two points short. Edinboro closed the game on an 11-3 run, with all 11 points coming in the final 58 seconds. Henri Wade-Chatman led four Fighting Scots in double-figures with a game-high 23 points while making 3 of 6 shots from long range. Mason tallied 16 points for Edinboro and was a perfect 6 of 6 from the free throw line. Brogdon finished with 13 points off the bench on 4 of 9 shooting, including 3 of 7 from behind the arc. Tommy Scales posted his first career double-double, dropping in 11 points on 5 of 7 field goals to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds off the bench.
 
1/4/15 – Mansfield 66, Edinboro 64
Tommy Scales knocked down a pair of free throws to give Edinboro a 64-61 advantage with 2:41 to play in the game. Over a minute later, a layup by Mansfield's Thomas More cut the Fighting Scots' lead to 64-63 at the 1:35 mark of the second half. After Edinboro missed a pair of 3-pointers on their next possession and Mansfield's Joe Bell secured the rebound on the ladder miss, the Mountaineers took a 65-64 lead on a Charles Pemberton layup with 19 seconds to play. With a chance to take the lead, the Fighting Scots turned the ball over with six seconds showing on the clock, before fouling Moore and sending him to the charity stripe for a pair of free throws. Moore would miss the first shot, but nail the second free throw to give Mansfield a 66-64 lead with four seconds remaining in the game. Mason took the ball the length of the floor, before his layup attempt was blocked by Pemberton and Moore grabbed the rebound, as the Mountaineers secured the two-point victory. Henri Wade-Chatman led all scorers with 29 points. He connected on two of six 3-pointers. The 6'2'' guard matched a team-high with five rebounds and dished out a team-high four assists, as well.
 
The Head Coaches
Edinboro: Pat Cleary (24-29, 3rd Year)
Pat Cleary sat at the right side of Edinboro head men's basketball coach Greg Walcavich for 14 years. On March 26, 2013, Cleary moved over a seat as he was officially introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach after Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary's first season ended with a 10-16 record. Edinboro lost three games to nationally-ranked teams and suffered a number of close losses, including two overtime losses and two defeats at the buzzer. Season number two saw the Fighting Scots make the PSAC playoffs as the number five seed after being picked to finish eighth in the PSAC coaches' poll. Edinboro ended the year with a 14-13 record, falling at Slippery Rock, 64-60, in the first round of the PSAC Playoffs. Among the victories was a 79-77 overtime upset of 16th-ranked Indiana(Pa.). The Crimson Hawks would go on to reach the NCAA Division II national championship game.
 
Kutztown: Bernie Driscoll (237-185, 16th year)
Bernie Driscoll enters his 16th season as head coach of the Kutztown University men's basketball team in 2015-16. In his 15 seasons, Driscoll holds a 237-186 (.560) overall record, and a 123-97 (.559) record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). He ranks 10th in PSAC history in career wins. Driscoll, the winningest coach in Kutztown history, is a three-time PSAC East Coach of the Year (2003, 2009, 2015). Driscoll won four PSAC East titles in a five-year span (2008, 2009, 2010, 2012), and has advanced to three PSAC Championship games with a 8-11 career playoff record. He has led the Golden Bears to a winning season in 11 of the last 13 seasons, and an appearance in the PSAC Tournament in 12 of the last 13. Kutztown qualified for back-to-back NCAA Tournaments in 2009 and 2010, the first NCAA bids for the program since its first-ever bid in 1988.
 
Mansfield: Pat Zipfel (0-3, 1st year)
Pat Zipfel was named the interim head coach of the Mountaineer men's basketball program prior to the start of the 2015-16 season. Zipfel served as an assistant coach in the NBA for 15 years including the last two years with the Chicago Bulls as the NBA Advance Scout responsible for opponent preparation along with game plan preparation and strategy. Prior to his stint with the Bulls, Zipfel spent four seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves in the same capacity. He also was a member of the coaching staff for the LA Clippers and Portland Trail Blazers.

Players to Watch
Henri Wade-Chatman (G, Sr.) was named to the first team All-PSAC West after finishing second in the PSAC with 18.9 points per game and third in total points with 511. He enters the season ranked 37th at Edinboro with 870 career points and 13th in career three pointers with 105. He had 17 points and nine rebounds in the season opener against Slippery Rock on Wednesday.
 
Tommy Scales (C, Sr.), a former transfer from Fairmont State, finished third on the team in scoring with 7.7 points per game and was second on the team in rebounding with 5.9 rebounds per game. He also shot 55.8 percent from the floor and blocked 23 shots. Scales posted 15 points with nine boards against Slippery Rock.
 
Jaymon Mason (G, R-So.) was named the 2015 PSAC Freshman of the Year, the first Fighting Scot to receive this honor since Dan Grabill in 2002. Mason ranked second on the team and 13th in the PSAC in scoring at 14.5 points per game. In addition, he was third in the conference and 32nd in NCAA Division II in free throw percentage at 86.8 percent. He was 118-of-144 from the charity stripe, and made 24 consecutive free throws. He had 14 points on Wednesday.
           
Scouting Kutztown
As a team, Kutztown has averaged 117.5 points per game in their first two games this season. Junior forward Josh Johnson leads the Golden Bears with 18.5 points per game and 20 rebounds while redshirt junior forward Ryan Connelly is second with 14.0 points per game. He also leads in blocks with four. Junior guard Howard Sellars has 13.5 points per game and is 7-for-14 in 3-pointers.

Sophomore forward Matt Tamanowsky leads the Mounties with 15.3 points per game and 28 rebounds. Sophomore guard Eric Lewis is the team's second leading scorer with 14.0 points per game and leads the squad in 3-pointers, shooting 6-for-15. Sophomore guard Da'Quan Jones is second in rebounds with 23 and leads in assists with 10.
