Jansen Hartmann's goal in double overtime propelled the Edinboro University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at 24th-ranked California (Pa.) on Wednesday. The Fighting Scots improve to 5-2-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the PSAC, while the Vulcans stand at 4-2-1 overall and in the PSAC.
Edinboro came in ranked fourth in the Atlantic Region, and had been ranked nationally the last two weeks. The Vulcans climbed into the rankings this week and are third in the region.
The first half was a quiet one, as California (Pa.) outshot Edinboro, 3-0, with one shot on goal.
The Fighting Scots would dominate the action in the second half. They tallied nine shots, including five on goal, but Vulcans goalie Meghan Jayes was there save each one. The Vulcans managed just two shots during the second half and overtime periods.
Edinboro nearly ended the match in the 94th minute when Jessica Sandhas' shot hit the crossbar. The Scots kept the pressure on, with
Alex Brown's shot 23 seconds into the second overtime period once again saved by Jayes.
The Fighting Scots finally broke through at the 103:06 mark. Hartmann scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season to account for the winning goal, beating Jayes from the bottom right corner after collecting a redirected ball.
Hartmann's goal gives her 16 points on seven goals and two assists. The Fighting Scots totaled 13 shots to the Vulcans' five, with eight shots on goal.
Sarah Baskey registered two saves and improved her record to 3-1-0.
The Fighting Scots continue their PSAC season on Saturday, September 26 with a home match against Lock Haven at 5:00 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium.
