Fritz Hoehn paced a contingent of Edinboro wrestlers who competed in the Purple Raider Open, hosted by Mount Union, on Sunday. Hoehn captured first place at 174 lbs. In addition,
Spencer Nagy took home fourth place at 157 lbs.
Hoehn, a freshman, competed at 174 lbs. for the first time after previously wrestling at 165 lbs. He won all four of his matches to improve to 15-4. His three matches were by bonus points, with a technical fall and a pair of major decisions. In the semifinals, he won a 14-3 major decision over Purdue's Kirk Johnson. In the finals, Hoehn won a 10-6 decision over Cody Hughes of Virginia Tech.
Nagy is also a freshman and had been serving as Edinboro's starter at 157 lbs. before
Austin Matthews' return on Saturday. He went 5-2 while finishing in fourth place, boosting his season record to 23-15. He won his first two matches, including one by technical fall, before losing in the third round. He would run off three more wins in the consolation rounds, capped by a 5-2 decision over Kent State's Ben Heyob in the consolation semifinals. In the third place match, Nagy dropped a 10-6 decision to B.C. Laprade.
