The Game StoryThe Edinboro University men's basketball team's rivalry week got off to a great start Wednesday night with a 74-61 win at Gannon. The Fighting Scots now look to complete the difficult sweep on Saturday when they host Mercyhurst at 3:00 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro stands at 12-6 overall and 11-4 in the PSAC while Mercyhurst, the PSAC West preseason favorites, is 14-5 and 11-4, respectively. The two teams are tied for second place in the PSAC West.

Wednesday's 74-61 win at Gannon marked the Scots' first season sweep of the Golden Knights since the 2010-11 season. After defeating Mercyhurst, 77-67, on December 1, Edinboro looks to sweep the Lakers for the first time since the 2012-13 season. The Lakers have swept the Fighting Scots each of the last two years. Edinboro has not swept Gannon and Mercyhurst in the same season since 2007-08, the year before they joined the PSAC.

After dropping consecutive games for the first time this year, the Fighting Scots are currently riding a season-best three-game winning streak. Prior to defeating Gannon, they defeated California (Pa.) last Wednesday, 89-79, and claimed a 99-88 win at Seton Hill on Sunday.

The Fighting Scots' 77 points in the first meeting are the most points Mercyhurst has allowed all season. While they rank 12th in the PSAC in scoring at 71.4 ppg., the Lakers are first in NCAA Division II in points allowed at 59.3 ppg. Edinboro shot 56.9 percent from the field (29-of-51) in the first meeting, their second-highest field goal percentage this year. Their highest percentage was at Seton Hill on January 24 at 64.3 percent (36-for-56).

Mercyhurst saw its eight-game winning streak end Wednesday at the hands of Slippery Rock, 64-54. The loss dropped the Lakers into a tie for second place with Edinboro in the PSAC West. Indiana (Pa.) is one game ahead in first place with a 12-3 PSAC record. Mercyhurst comes off their lowest shooting performance against Slippery Rock at 27.8 percent, connecting on 15 of 54 shots. The Hurst trailed The Rock at halftime, 17-16.

Jaymon Mason and
Henri Wade-Chatman are the PSAC's leading-scoring tandem at a combined 42.1 ppg. Mason is second in the conference in scoring at 22.0 ppg. while Wade-Chatman is fourth at 20.1 ppg. On Wednesday, Mason just missed his fourth 30-point game this season with 29 points, connecting of 4-of-7 3-pointers and 11-of-13 free throws. The 6'3" redshirt sophomore is fourth in the conference in free throw percentage at 87.4 percent and tops the PSAC in free throws made (111-of-127). He also stands sixth in 3-point field goal percentage at 41.7 percent (43-for-103).

Wade-Chatman climbed up to 15th on Edinboro's all-time career scoring list with 1,232 points after dropping in 17 points at Gannon. The 6'2" senior is tied for 11th in the PSAC in free throw percentage at 80.4 percent (82-for-102) and is 14th in 3-point field goal percentage at 36.4 percent (40-for-110).

Junior guard
Je'Land Head has started to become one of Edinboro's top contributors off the bench. A transfer from Mercyhurst North East, Head had a career-high 14 points at Gannon. He played the entire second half after not playing at all in the first half, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor, including 3-of-3 from behind the arc. He notched his first double-digit scoring effort for Edinboro against Cal last Wednesday with 10 points.

The Fighting Scots are fifth in the PSAC in scoring at 79.4 ppg. and are 14th in points allowed at 77.5 ppg. They are second in the conference in free throw percentage at 75.5 percent (327-for-433) and fourth in 3-point field goal percentage at 37.3 percent (131-for-351).

The Last Meeting12/1/15 – Edinboro 77, Mercyhurst 67 at Mercyhurst Athletic CenterIn Edinboro's first road contest, four players combined for 67 of Edinboro's 77 points. The Fighting Scots shot a then-season-high 56.9 percent from the floor (29-of-51) and made 13-of-15 free throws.
Sheldon Brogdon bounced off the bench to key the victory as he buried five 3-pointers in seven attempts on his way to 19 points. He made three straight 3-pointers during a 21-6 Edinboro scoring run in the second half.
Jaymon Mason also scored 19 points, going 6-for-7 at the free throw line, with six rebounds.
Tommy Scales scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, and finished with his first double-double with 11 rebounds.
Henri Wade-Chatman turned in a strong all-around game with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists. Mercyhurst shot 42.9 percent for the game (24-of-56), but the Lakers made just one 3-pointer in 18 attempts. Mercyhurst had three players score in double figures, led by Damon Jones' game-high 20 points. H'ian Hale and Sean Beins added 10 points apiece.

Last Time Out1/27/16 – Edinboro 74, Gannon 61 at Hammermill CenterThe Fighting Scots completed their first season sweep of the Golden Knights since the 2010-11 season with a strong second-half performance after a slow first half. Edinboro shot 28.6 percent (8-of-28) in the first half and trailed the Golden Knights at halftime, 28-27. The Scots bounced back in the second half, shooting 61.5 percent (16-of-26) for 47 second-half points. Edinboro made 8-of-16 3-pointers, including 5-of-6 in the second half, while Gannon could only connect on 2-of-17 shots from long range.
Jaymon Mason scored a game-high 29 points, with 20 of those points coming in the second half. He also finished tied with
Art Cook for a team-high eight rebounds and had four assists with just two turnovers in 40 minutes of play.
Je'Land Head, who did not get off the bench in the first half, played a near-perfect second half as he played all 20 minutes and did not miss a shot while scoring 14 points. He was 5-for-5 from the field and 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
Henri Wade-Chatman added 17 points. Gannon held a 35-30 advantage on the glass, but the Fighting Scots committed 11 turnovers, just three in the second half, while Gannon turned the ball over 15 times.

1/27/16 – Slippery Rock, 64, Mercyhurst 54 at Mercyhurst Athletic CenterThe Lakers shot their lowest field goal percentage of the season at 27.8 percent (15-for-54) as The Rock halted Mercyhurst's eight-game winning streak. In the first half, both teams shot under 30 percent, with Slippery Rock holding a 17-16 lead at the half. SRU shot 29.2 percent in the opening period while Hurst shot 22.2 percent. The Rock warmed up in the second half, shooting 56.5 percent, connecting on 4-of-4 3-pointers, while the Lakers shot just 33.3 percent. Damon Jones led Mercyhurst in scoring with 15 points while Kayode Ajenifuja recorded 10 points and a team-high seven boards.

The Head CoachesEdinboro: Pat Cleary (36-35, 3rd Year)Pat Cleary sat at the right side of Edinboro head men's basketball coach Greg Walcavich for 14 years. On March 26, 2013, Cleary was officially introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach after Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary's first season ended with a 10-16 record. Edinboro lost three games to nationally-ranked teams and suffered a number of close losses, including two overtime losses and two defeats at the buzzer. Season number two saw the Fighting Scots make the PSAC playoffs as the number five seed after being picked to finish eighth in the PSAC coaches' poll. Edinboro ended the year with a 14-13 record, falling at Slippery Rock, 64-60, in the first round of the PSAC Playoffs. Among the victories was a 79-77 overtime upset of 16th-ranked Indiana (Pa.). The Crimson Hawks would go on to reach the NCAA Division II national championship game.

Mercyhurst: Gary Manchel (215-141, 13th year)Gary Manchel, the eighth head coach in the history of the men's basketball program, is in his 13th season as the Lakers' head mentor. Manchel has revitalized the Laker program and continues to build on his impressive resume that includes 366 career wins. He previously served as the head coach of UMass Lowell from 1992-2001. The men's basketball team ended the 2014-15 season with its second 20-win season in the last five years. The team went 20-7 and advanced to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. The Lakers' have now recorded ten straight winning seasons, a school record, all under the direction of Manchel.

Players to WatchHenri Wade-Chatman (G, 6'2", Sr.) is 15th all-time at Edinboro with 1,232 career points in just 71 games. He has started every game of his Edinboro career. He is fourth in the PSAC with 20.1 ppg. and 14th in 3-point field goal percentage at 36.4 percent (40-for-110). The 6'2" senior is 12th in the PSAC in free throw percentage at 80.4 percent (82-for-102) and is third in the conference in steals at 2.0 steals per game. He is seventh at Edinboro in career 3-pointers made (145) and eighth in career 3-pointers attempted (378). Wade-Chatman tied his career high of 32 points at Lock Haven on January 3. He has scored in double figures in all 18 games and has led the team in scoring in nine contests. He was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week for the week of December 28. Jaymon Mason (G, 6'3", R-So.) was named PSAC Athlete of the Week for the third time this season for the week of January 18. Mason is second in the PSAC and ranks 22nd in Division II in scoring at 22.0 ppg. and currently has 788 career points through 45 games. The 6'3" redshirt sophomore registered his third 30-point game at Seton Hill on Sunday with a game-high 36 points. Mason fell one point shy of a fourth 30-point game at Gannon on Wednesday with 29 markers. He had a career-high 39 points against Kutztown and netted 35 points in Edinboro's first game against Gannon. He has been held to single digits in scoring once this season. Mason leads the PSAC and is 18th in Division II with 111 free throws made while ranking fourth in the PSAC in free throw percentage at 87.4 percent (111-for-127). He is ranked sixth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 41.7 percent (43-for-103). Mason is 13th in the conference in field goal percentage at 45.1 percent (121-for-268). Mason has led the team in scoring eight times and has scored 20-or-more points on nine occasions. He was named the 2015 PSAC Freshman of the Year, the first Fighting Scot to receive this honor since Dan Grabill in 2002.

Tommy Scales (C, 6'8", Sr.) leads the Scots and is eighth in the PSAC in rebounds with 7.4 rpg. Scales is fourth in the conference offensive boards at 3.0 rpg. He is third on the team in scoring at 12.2 ppg. and third in the PSAC in field goal percentage at 53.5 percent (92-for-172). Scales set a career high with 23 points at Seton Hill on Sunday. Scales has posted four double-doubles, including consecutive double-doubles at Mercyhurst (15 points, 11 rebounds) and at East Stroudsburg (16 points, 11 boards). The former transfer from Fairmont State has led the team in rebounds in nine games.

Scouting Mercyhurst After falling to Edinboro on December 1, 77-67, the Lakers have gone on to win 10 of their last 13 games, including a stretch where they won eight consecutive games. That win streak came to an end Wednedsay after falling to Slippery Rock, 64-54. In the last four games of their winning streak, the Lakers allowed just 41.0 ppg. Perhaps their most notable win in that stretch came against Pitt-Johnstown by a 52-point margin on January 9, 89-37. UPJ currently stands in fourth place in the PSAC West.

The Lakers top NCAA Division II in scoring defense at 59.3 ppg. and rank 12th in the PSAC in scoring at 71.9 ppg. They are third in the PSAC and 18th in Division II with a 12.7 scoring margin.
