The Game Story
The Edinboro University men's basketball team opens their 2016-17 season hosting Thiel on Saturday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse. The game is part of Edinboro University's Military Appreciation Day, with military members and veterans gaining free admission to all of the Fighting Scots' Saturday home events.
Head coach
Pat Cleary returns for his fourth season at the helm for Edinboro and 18th year overall with the Fighting Scots. His squad looks to build upon their 2015-16 season that saw them post a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league ledger, their best season under coach Cleary's tenure. The Fighting Scots earned the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament. Edinboro was selected fifth in the PSAC West preseason poll.
The 2016-17 Fighting Scots feature a solid blend of familiar faces and newcomers. Redshirt junior guard and Division II Bulletin Preseason All-American
Jaymon Mason is back after receiving Division II Bulletin All-American honorable mention honors in 2015-16. The former PSAC West Freshman of the Year was named to the NABC first team and All-PSAC West first team, while being named the Division II Bulletin's Player of the Month for January 2016. He led Edinboro and finished tied for second in the PSAC with 20.8 ppg. Mason is 30th all-time with 934 career points, putting him 66 points away from the 1,000 career point milestone.
Jaymon Mason will have a new backcourt mate with the departure of
Henri Wade-Chatman. In 2015-16, Mason and Wade-Chatman became the first-ever Edinboro tandem to each average at least 20.0 ppg., with Wade-Chatman averaging 20.3 ppg. Looking to fill the void are senior guards
Sheldon Brogdon, who averaged 5.6 ppg. last year as a reserve,
Chibunna Ukandu, who will suit up after redshirting in 2015-16, and
Malachy Onwudiegwu, a transfer from Alcorn State.
Junior forward Mike Beck returns after starting all 26 games last year, averaging 4.3 ppg. and 2.2 rpg. Senior forward
Mikael Anderson moves from guard to forward this season after scoring 4.2 ppg. and pulling down 2.8 rpg. in 26 games with three starts. They are joined this year down low by newcomers
Maceo Baston, a 6'5" transfer from Southwestern C.C.,
Jack Frank, a 6'8" transfer from Lees-McRae,
Andre Frederick, a 6'9" transfer from Robert Morris, and
Justin Sylver, a 6'7" freshman from South Euclid, Ohio.

12/30/15 – Edinboro 78, Thiel 72
Edinboro never trailed in the contest after scoring the first 17 points of the game. The Fighting Scots held Thiel scoreless until 13 minutes, 18 seconds remained in the first half when Clandell Cetoute made the second of two free throws. Edinboro's lead would grow to as much as 23 points at 32-9 with just under eight minutes to play in the first half before the Tomcats cut Edinboro's lead to 43-25 at the half. The second half was a different story for the Fighting Scots, however, as they were plagued by missed free throws and turnovers. Thiel would close to within 71-67 with 37 seconds to play, but
Jaymon Mason and
Henri Wade-Chatman made six free throws to hold off Thiel. After a hot start, Edinboro shot 43.6 percent from the floor (24-of-55), while Thiel finished at 40.6 percent (26-of-64). The Fighting Scots ended at 24-of-40 from the free throw line, with Thiel making 12-of-23. Edinboro held a 45-39 advantage on the glass, while committing 16 turnovers, compared to 13 for Thiel. Wade-Chatman finished with 24 points, going a perfect 11-for-11 from the charity stripe, while Mason tallied 22 points.
Art Cook pulled down a career-high 14 points for the Fighting Scots to lead the contest. Luke Kochka paced Thiel with 26 points, making 6-of-13 3-pointers, while adding a team-high eight rebounds.
The Head Coaches
Edinboro: Pat Cleary (39-40, 4th Year)
Pat Cleary sat at the right side of Edinboro head men's basketball coach Greg Walcavich for 14 years. On March 26, 2013, Cleary was officially introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach after Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary's teams have improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. He made the playoffs for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll.
Thiel: Tim Loomis (Career: 250-325, 22nd Year)
In his 11th season as the Tomcats' head coach, Tim Loomis has built a highly-successful program at Thiel. But that is no surprise. His background includes stints as the head coach at California (Pa.) and Florida Atlantic, leading Florida Atlantic from Division II to Division I status. He was also an assistant coach at Cal, and in 2007 was inducted into the Cal Hall of Fame. Finally, he served as an assistant coach at Penn State from 1986-89. In addition, he enjoyed a very successful tenure as the head coach at Kennedy Catholic High School, leading the Golden Eagles to the PIAA playoffs all five years, including two trips to the championship game.

Players to Watch
Jaymon Mason (G, R-Jr.) was named to the Division II Bulletin All-American preseason team after earning All-American honorable mention accolades last season. The former PSAC West Freshman of the Year was named to the NABC first team and All-PSAC West first team in 2015-16, while being named the Division II Bulletin's Player of the Month for January 2016. The 6'3" guard paced Edinboro last season and finished tied for second in the PSAC with 20.8 ppg. (ninth all-time), while finishing second on the team with 6.0 rpg. He had four 30-point games, including a career-high 39 points against Kutztown, and three double-doubles, while setting a new school season record with 153 made free throws. Mason finished 11th all-time with 542 season points. Mason is 30th all-time with 934 career points, putting him 66 points away from 1,000 career points. He is second all-time in career free throw percentage at .858 (271-316) and 12th in career free throws made. Mason is eighth all-time in both career 3-point field goal percentage at .382 (95-249), and in career scoring average at 17.6 ppg.
Scouting Thiel
Thiel finished 2015-16 with a 12-14 overall record and 10-8 record in the PAC. The Division III Tomcats, earned the sixth seed in the PAC Tournament.
Saturday's contest marks the ninth straight year that Thiel travels to McComb Fieldhouse, as they look to erase a 16-game losing streak to the Fighting Scots. The last two contests have been particularly competitive, with the Tomcats falling to Edinboro by less than ten points.
Head coach Tim Loomis welcomes a slew of new players to the Tomcats this season. They look to fill the void of departing players Luke Kochka and Khari Bess, who were the team's top scorers last season with 17.5 ppg. and 15.5 ppg., respectively. Kochka was second on the team with 6.7 rpg.
Junior forward Clandelle Cetoute returns for Thiel after leading the team with 6.9 rpg. and averaging 8.9 ppg. last season. He is joined by fellow junior forward Avril Campbell, who averaged 7.3 ppg. and 5.9 rpg. Junior guard Tyreik Burton is also back. He registered 10.7 ppg., while playing in just nine contests.
