The Game Story
Playoff aspirations are on the line for Edinboro and Clarion Saturday when the two teams square off in a PSAC West contest beginning at 3:00 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots can clinch both a PSAC Tournament berth and a home playoff game with a win while the Golden Eagles look to stay in the playoff picture. The game is part of Edinboro's "Hoops for Harlie", in memory of Girard High School basketball standout Harlie Rae Bolt, who passed away after a battle with leukemia. Admission is free with a donation, as all proceeds will benefit the "Halos for Harlie" Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Fans are encouraged to wear orange to the game.

Edinboro is third in the PSAC West at 13-9 overall and 12-7 in the PSAC while Clarion is fifth at 12-13 and 9-10, respectively. The Boro looks for its third PSAC Tournament appearance in four years and its first home tournament game since 2012-13. It would also mark the team's second straight tournament appearance under third-year head coach Pat Cleary. Clarion seeks its first playoff berth since 2009-10 and its first season sweep of Edinboro since 2010-11. The Scots had won seven straight games against Clarion before losing to the Golden Eagles in overtime, 74-68, on January 9. Clarion is 10-2 at home this season, but just 2-11 away from Tippin Gymnasium. The Fighting Scots look for their 100th win against the Golden Eagles, winning more games against Clarion than against any other opponent in program history.

When the teams first met on January 9, Clarion rallied from a 10-point deficit with 10:01 left in the second half to force overtime tied at 64. A Tommy Scales jumper gave Edinboro the early overtime lead, but the Scots would miss their next five shots as Clarion outscored Edinboro, 10-4, in the extra session. The Golden Eagles outrebounded the Scots, 47-36, and had five players score in double figures. Tim Gill led Clarion with 18 points while Rob Agurs added 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Senior guard Henri Wade-Chatman scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed a team-high six boards.

The Fighting Scots ended a three-game losing streak Wednesday night with a 78-76 come-from-behind, overtime win at fourth-place Pitt-Johnstown. Except for a 2-0 lead 12 seconds into the game, Edinboro never led in regulation. They trailed UPJ by as much as 15 points in the first half and overcame a 10-point deficit with 14:19 remaining in the second half. After the Mountain Cats took the lead on a Dale Clancy layup with 13 seconds left in regulation, redshirt sophomore guard Jaymon Mason hit a turn-around jump shot with four seconds left to tie the game at 67 and force overtime.

All of Edinboro's 11 overtime points against UPJ came on free throws. Trailing, 71-69, with 3:25 left in overtime, the Fighting Scots reeled off six straight points to put them ahead for good. Edinboro led, 77-76, with ten seconds remaining when UPJ's Dale Clancy stole an inbounds pass from Michael Beck, but called a timeout when the Mountain Cats were out of them, resulting in a technical foul. Jaymon Mason converted the ensuing free throw, with a last-gasp 3-point attempt by Rasaun Mosley falling short of the mark at the buzzer. The Boro made 23-of-27 shots from the line while the Mountain Cats, who lead the PSAC in free throw percentage, shot just six free throws, making five.

Edinboro is second in the conference and 36th in NCAA Division II in free throw percentage at 75.1 percent and ranks sixth in in the PSAC in 3-point field goal percentage at 35.6 percent (144-for-405). They are sixth in the conference in scoring at 77.4 ppg. and 15th in scoring defense at 78.0 ppg.

Jaymon Mason picked up his fourth 30-point game and third double-double of the season against UPJ with 34 points and 12 rebounds. He shot 13-for-19 from the field and 7-for-9 from the free throw line. The last Edinboro player with four-or-more 30-point games was Tyrone Mason, Jaymon's father, who did it 11 times in 1995-96. The 6'3" guard leads the PSAC with 138 made free throws and is two free throws away from breaking the single-season school record set by Billy Wade in 1989-90. He and backcourt mate Henri Wade-Chatman are the PSAC's highest-scoring tandem at a combined 41.0 ppg., with Mason ranking second in the conference and 35th in Division II at 21.6 ppg. He ranks third in the PSAC in free throw percentage at 86.3 percent (138-for-160), seventh in 3-point field goal percentage at 39.7 percent (46-for-116), and 12th in field goal percentage at 45.2 percent (146-for-323).

Henri Wade-Chatman has been held scoreless in the first half in the last two games, but still finished in double figures in both contests to maintain his stretch of scoring in double digits in every game this year. Despite playing just 11 minutes and shooting 0-for-6 from the field in the first half against UPJ, he finished with 12 points. The 6'2" guard is Edinboro's 13th all-time leading scorer with 1,297 career points in just 75 games and is seventh in career 3-pointers with 150. He is fourth in the PSAC in scoring at 19.4 ppg., 11th in free throw percentage at 79.7 percent (102-for-128), and 14th in 3-point field goal percentage at 35.4 percent (45-for-127).

Sophomore forward Quinn Lee Yaw tied his career-high with nine rebounds on Wednesday in his first start since November 22. This comes one game after he netted a career-high 20 points at Indiana (Pa.) last Saturday. The 6'6" forward started Edinboro's first three games before suffering an injury that sidelined him for nearly two months. He returned to action in the Fighting Scots' first meeting with UPJ on January 16.

Edinboro lost three games to nationally-ranked teams and suffered a number of close losses, including two overtime losses and two defeats at the buzzer. Season number two saw the Fighting Scots make the PSAC playoffs as the number five seed after being picked to finish eighth in the PSAC coaches' poll. Edinboro ended the year with a 14-13 record, falling at Slippery Rock, 64-60, in the first round of the PSAC Playoffs. Among the victories was a 79-77 overtime upset of 16th-ranked Indiana (Pa.).
