The Game StoryThe Edinboro University men's basketball team travels to California (Pa.) on Wednesday to wrap up the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Fighting Scots have already secured a first round playoff game, and can clinch the third seed in the PSAC West with a win or a loss by Pitt-Johnstown. The Scots are currently third in the Western Division at 14-10 and 13-8 in the PSAC, while the Vulcans are 7-20 and 4-17, respectively.
A win Wednesday will give the Fighting Scots their first season sweep of Cal since 2004-05. Edinboro looks to rebound after a last-second 76-74 loss to Seton Hill on Saturday. Senior guard
Henri Wade-Chatman tied his career high with 32 points. He connected on 5-of-9 3-pointers, with his last 3-pointer tying the game at 74 with 14.9 seconds remaining. On SHU's ensuing possession, Kameron Taylor, who used a buzzer-beating shot to beat the Scots two years ago, nailed the game-winning jumper with one second to go.
California (Pa.) looks to end a nine-game losing streak, which started with their 89-79 loss to Edinboro in their first meeting on January 20. The Boro's
Henri Wade-Chatman and Cal's Richard Smith tied a game-high with 24 points apiece.
Jaymon Mason tallied 19 points, a career-high nine assists, and six rebounds, while
Tommy Scales added 14 points. Edinboro cashed in on 16 Cal turnovers for 24 points while the Vulcans scored just eight points off of seven Scots turnovers. The Boro outscored Cal in bench points, 21-11, with
Je'Land Head scoring ten points off the pine in 13 minutes of action.
Wednesday's contest marks the final game for Vulcans head coach Bill Brown, who is set to retire after 20 seasons on the sidelines for Cal. Brown has amassed a career record of 490-337 in 30 years as a head coach and leaves as Cal's winningest head coach with a record of 365-210.
Guards
Henri Wade-Chatman and
Jaymon Mason are the PSAC's leading-scoring tandem at a combined 41.4 ppg. They are on pace to become the first pair of players in school history to average at least 20.0 ppg. in the same season. Mason is 17th all-time in season points with 507 points while Wade-Chatman is 23rd with 486 points. Mason is second in the conference and 38th in NCAA Division II in scoring at 21.1 ppg. The 6'3" sophomore is Edinboro's single-season record holder in free throws with 146, ranking fourth in the PSAC in free throw percentage at 85.4 percent (146-for-171). He is 10th in the PSAC in 3-point field goal percentage at 39.2 percent (47-for-120) and 12th in the PSAC in field goal percentage at 45.8 percent (157-for-343).
Henri Wade-Chatman tied his career high with 32 points against Seton Hill, moving him into 11th all-time at Edinboro in career scoring with 1,356 points in just 77 games. He is also seventh all-time with 157 career 3-pointers made and 406 3-pointers attempted. The 6'2" senior is fourth in the PSAC in scoring at 20.3 ppg. He is 13th in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 37.7 percent (52-for-138) and 14th in free throw percentage at 78.3 percent (112-for-143).
Senior center
Tommy Scales registered his second consecutive double-double and sixth this season with 18 points and 14 rebounds against Seton Hill. He has tallied two 20-point games, including a career-high 23 points in their first meeting against Seton Hill on January 24. The 6'8" senior is fourth in the PSAC in field goal percentage at 53.5 percent (121-for-226) and ninth in the PSAC in rebounding at 7.3 rpg.
Edinboro is fifth in the PSAC in scoring at 78.0 ppg. and 15th in scoring defense at 78.6 ppg. They rank second in the conference and 36th in Division II in free throw percentage at 75.2 percent. The Fighting Scots are fifth in the conference with a plus 1.5 turnover margin.
California (Pa.) ranks 15th in the PSAC in scoring at 67.0 ppg. and 12th in points allowed at 73.8 ppg. Senior forward Richard Smith leads the Vulcans in scoring at 11.7 ppg. and ranks 13th in the PSAC in rebounding at 6.8 rpg. The former transfer from Lakeland Community also ranks sixth in the conference in blocks at 1.2 blocks per game.

Jaymon Mason registering 19 points and a career-high nine assists. Both teams shot over 50 percent from the floor, with Cal ending at 53.2 percent and Edinboro at 52.9 percent. The Scots connected on 14-of-26 3-pointers while the Vulcans made 9-of-19. Trailing 22-16 seven minutes into the game, Edinboro responded with a 19-2 run and held the lead for the rest of the game. The Scots led, 46-40, at halftime and used a 12-2 run in the second half to widen their lead by as much as 18 points. The Scots converted 16 Cal turnovers for 24 points while the Vulcans scored just eight points off of seven Edinboro turnovers. The Scots outscored the Vulcans, 21-11, in bench points.
Tommy Scales added 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor.
Michael Beck and
Je'Land Head scored 10 points apiece, with Beck shooting 4-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from behind the arc. For Cal, Smith had a team-high nine rebounds, while Luke Andjusic and Khalil Jabbie scored 18 and 16 points, respectively.

February 20, 2016 - Mercyhurst 65, California (Pa.) 38California (Pa.) lost its ninth straight contest and were held to 35.6 percent from the floor, scoring just 15 points in the first half to trail, 35-15, at intermission. The Lakers cashed in on 18 Vulcans' turnovers for 19 points while Cal scored just 12 points on 13 Mercyhurst turnovers. Mercyhurst outrebounded the Vulcans, 33-25. Nate Bellhy and Daniel Sapp scored a team-high 10 points apiece, with Bellhy grabbing a team-high six rebounds.
The Head CoachesEdinboro: Pat Cleary (38-39, 3rd Year)Pat Cleary sat at the right side of Edinboro head men's basketball coach Greg Walcavich for 14 years. On March 26, 2013, Cleary was officially introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach after Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary's first season ended with a 10-16 record. Edinboro lost three games to nationally-ranked teams and suffered a number of close losses, including two overtime losses and two defeats at the buzzer. Season number two saw the Fighting Scots make the PSAC playoffs as the number five seed after being picked to finish eighth in the PSAC coaches' poll. Edinboro ended the year with a 14-13 record, falling at Slippery Rock, 64-60, in the first round of the PSAC Playoffs. Among the victories was a 79-77 overtime upset of 16th-ranked Indiana (Pa.). The Crimson Hawks would go on to reach the NCAA Division II national championship game.
California (Pa.): Bill Brown (365-210, 20th year; Career: 490-337, 30th year)Bill Brown enters his final game as Cal's head coach amassing a record of 365-210 in 20 years to become the winningest coach in program history. Brown has guided Cal to eight 20-win seasons, qualifying for the PSAC Tournament in 14 of 20 seasons and advancing to the PSAC Championship four times, winning it twice (1999, 2008). They advanced to the Elite Eight in 2008. Before landing at Cal U, Brown served as head coach for eight seasons at Kenyon, a NCAA Division III program in Columbus, Ohio. He started his career as a head coach at Sacramento State and coached the Hornets for two seasons during the program's transition to NCAA Division I. He has held assistant coaching positions at Tennessee, Arkansas, Kent State, and his alma mater Ohio, where he was a three-year starter and a two-time, all-conference selection on the Bobcats basketball squad.

The 6'2" senior is 13th in the PSAC in 3-point field goal percentage at 37.7 percent (52-for-138) and second in steals at 2.0 steals per game. He is seventh at Edinboro in career 3-pointers made (157) and career 3-pointers attempted (406). Wade-Chatman has scored in double figures in all 24 games, leading the team in scoring in 12 contests. Jaymon Mason (G, 6'3", R-So.) was named the Division II Bulletin Player of the Month for the month of January. He is also a three-time PSAC West Athlete of the Week honoree this season, most recently for the week of January 18. Mason is second in the PSAC and 38th in NCAA Division II in scoring at 21.1 ppg. and currently has 899 career points through 51 games. Mason tallied his fourth 30-point game and third double-double of the year at Pitt-Johnstown with 34 points and 12 rebounds. The last Edinboro player with four-or-more 30-point games was Tyrone Mason, Jaymon's father, who did it 11 times in 1995-96. The 6'3" guard had a career-high 39 points against Kutztown, along with 36 points versus Seton Hill and 35 points in the first meeting with Gannon. Mason has scored in double digits in 22 of 24 games this season. He leads the PSAC and is 18th in Division II with 146 free throws made, breaking the single-season school record recently set by Billy Wade in 1989-90. Mason ranks fourth in the PSAC in free throw percentage at 85.4 percent (146-for-171), tenth in 3-point field goal percentage at 39.2 percent (47-for-120), and 12th in field goal percentage at 45.8 percent (157-for-343). Bill Brown has shuffled around his starting lineup this season, with seven players starting at least 11 games. In addition, ten players are averaging at least 14 minutes per game.
