The Game StoryThe third-seed Edinboro University men's basketball team returns to the PSAC Tournament for the second straight year, hosting sixth-seed Clarion in the first round on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots finished the regular season at 15-10 overall and 14-8 in the PSAC, while the Golden Eagles finished 13-15 and 10-12, respectively. While Clarion is 3-12 away from Tippin Gym, Edinboro is just 7-6 at home.
Â
Saturday marks Edinboro's second playoff appearance under third-year head coach
Pat Cleary. It also marks their third conference tournament appearance in four years. Last season, the fifth-seed Fighting Scots fell at fourth-seed Slippery Rock in the opening round by a 64-60 decision. Clarion makes its first PSAC Tournament appearance since 2009-10 and its first under second-year head coach Marcess Williams, who turned around a program that won just 11 games combined in the two seasons prior to his arrival.
Â
The Fighting Scots and Golden Eagles split the season series, with both games going into overtime. Clarion won the first meeting on their home court, 74-68, on January 9, while Edinboro took the second matchup, 97-94, at McComb Fieldhouse on Febuary 13. The win marked the Scots' 100
th all-time win against Clarion. In a series that dates back to 1928-29, Edinboro has won more games against Clarion than against any other opponent in team history. They hold a 100-71 lead in the all-time series and have won eight of the last nine meetings.
Â
Edinboro clinched the third seed in the PSAC West with a 79-75 win at California (Pa.) in the regular season finale on Wednesday. The Fighting Scots fended off the Vulcans after overcoming shaky free throw shooting late in the game and a lengthy delay late in the first half after a heavy rain storm sprung a leak in the Convocation Center roof. Redshirt sophomore guard
Jaymon Mason recorded his 12
th 20-point game of the season with 28 points. He shot 2-for-2 from 3-point range and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe to bring his school season record total to 150 made free throws. Senior guard

Tommy Scales just missed out on his third straight double-double and seventh this season with 10 rebounds and nine points.

Both rank in the top 20 in all-time season scoring at Edinboro, with Mason 11

Â
Clarion ended its regular season last Saturday with a last-second 67-65 loss to Pitt-Johnstown. Their lone win was a 68-67 victory at Slippery Rock that gave them the tiebreaker over SRU for the sixth and final tournament spot in the West. Both teams finished tied with 10-12 records after The Rock fell to UPJ, 80-65, on Wednesday night.
Â
Golden Eagles' senior guard Andre' Anthony scored 21 points in the loss to UPJ, shooting 8-of-15 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Last Time OutFebruary 24, 2016 – Edinboro 79, California (Pa.) 75Edinboro clinched the third seed in the PSAC Tournament by fending off the Vulcans. The Fighting Scots were forced to overcome a lengthy delay due to a leak in the Convocation Center roof during a heavy rainstorm late in the first half, along with some shaky free throw shooting late in the game. After a back-and-forth first half, Edinboro never trailed in the second half and led by as much as 11 points. Cal kept the game close, pulling to within two points in the last 30 seconds. While the Scots shot 18-for-25 from the charity stripe for the game, they shot just 3-of-7 inside the last minute, allowing the Vulcans to remain within striking distance of the lead.
Jaymon Mason made just one of two free throws to put the Boro ahead, 78-75, with 23 seconds remaining. Cal's Luke Andjusic, who made five 3-pointers in the game, was unable to convert on a game-tying triple with 15 seconds left. Edinboro used its rebounding ability to help in the victory, totaling 38 boards to Cal's 28.
Jaymon Mason finished with 28 points for his 12
th 20-point game of the year.
Henri Wade-Chatman added 17 points, while
Tommy Scales just missed out on his third straight double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points.

It wouldn't have mattered, however, as Pitt-Johnstown's Nate Snodgrass buried the game-winning 18-footer with 2.5 seconds left. Andre' Anthony scored a team-high 21 points, while Agurs notched his seventh double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. BJ Andrews finished with 10 points.
