Mitchell Port Inducted into Bellefonte High School Wrestling Hall of Fame

BELLEFONTE, Pa. –  Current Edinboro University assistant wrestling coach and former standout  Mitchell Port was inducted into the Bellefonte High School Wrestling Hall of Fame on Tuesday, January 10. The induction ceremony took place prior to Bellefonte's match with Penn Valley.

Port is the all-time wins leader in Red Raider history with 156.  He was a three-time PIAA placewinner, winning the state title at 125 lbs. as a senior in 2010.  He previously placed sixth as a freshman and fourth as a junior.

"He is definitely a once-in-a-generation type kid," Bellefonte coach Mike Maney told the Centre Daily Times. "You just hope to not get in his way. He was a product of our program. He went through our youth program. He wrestled in our junior high program and was a four-year varsity starter. Certainly grateful to be a part of his wrestling career for sure."

Port was part of a blue-chip recruiting class for Edinboro in 2010 that also included A.J. Schopp, Dave Habat, and Kory Mines. The foursome combined for over 500 wins as Fighting Scots, and led Edinboro to the two best finishes at the NCAA Division I National Championships in school history. Head Coach Tim Flynn's team finished third in 2015 and fifth in 2014.  In addition, the Fighting Scots won four straight PSAC crowns and back-to-back EWL championships his last two years.

Port concluded his Edinboro career as a four-time national qualifier and a three-time All-American, including runner-up finishes at 141 lbs. in 2013 and 2015. He placed xx in 2014.  He is one of only eight Edinboro wrestlers to be a three or four-time All-American. He is also one of two Edinboro wrestlers to reach the championship match twice, joining Josh Koscheck. He sandwiched the two second-place finishes with a third place showing in 2014. All told, Port was 17-5 while competing at Nationals.

A three-time EWL champion and four-time PSAC titlist, Port concluded his career with a 132-17 record. He ranks eighth in career victories and is third in career winning percentage (.886). He also stands ninth in career falls with 35. Over his last two seasons, he won 68 of 71 matches, with 47 of those wins by bonus points. In dual matches, Port had a 57-3 record, losing twice as a redshirt freshman, and not again until his senior year against top-ranked Logan Stieber of Ohio State. That was a stretch of 45 consecutive dual wins. He lost just one EWL dual in his career.

As a senior, Port with a 36-2 record and was named the EWL Co-Wrestler of the Year, sharing the honor with Habat, after previously receiving the honor in 2013 and '14. He was the PSAC Wrestler of the Year for the second time, also receiving the accolade in 2013. He was named the WrestlingReport.com 2015 Pennsylvania Collegiate Wrestler of the Year.  Finally, he was selected the Art Craft Champion of Champions after winning his second straight Midlands Championships title.

Port joined Flynn's staff later in 2015 and is in his second season as an assistant coach at Edinboro.
