Matthews Returns with Three Pins as Edinboro Wins Two of Three at Pitt Duals

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (January 14, 2017) – The Edinboro wrestling team won two of three matches on Saturday while competing in the Pitt Duals on Saturday at Fitzgerald Field House. The Fighting Scots evened their record at 4-4 while winning duals over Brown, 39-3, and VMI, 47-0, along with a 24-13 loss to tenth-ranked North Carolina State. All four of Edinboro's losses have come to nationally-ranked teams.
 
Head coach Tim Flynn may have received even better news with the return of Austin Matthews to the lineup. The redshirt junior has been out since early December, but on Saturday, he competed with a vengeance, winning all three of his matches at 165 lbs. by pins in the first period.
 
Matthews was one of three Fighting Scots to win all three of his matches, joined by Sean Russell at 125 lbs. and heavyweight Billy Miller.  Russell won all three of his bouts by major decision.
 
The day got underway with the win over Brown, as Edinboro won nine of ten matches. That included eight wins by bonus points, including a fall by Chase Delande at 157 lbs.
 
Russell got Edinboro off to a strong start against North Carolina State with a 12-4 major decision. The Wolfpack answered with wins in the next four bouts. In the feature matchup of the day, Patricio Lugo, ranked ninth at 149 lbs., was edged by 12th-ranked Sam Speno, 8-6. In the other matchup of nationally-ranked wrestlers, 12th-ranked Michael Macchiavello won a 13-8 decision over 19th-ranked Dakota Geer. Matthews won by fall and Miller won a 6-2 decision for Edinboro's other wins.
 
Edinboro picked up its second shutout in a week with the 47-0 win over VMI. The Fighting Scots won eight of the ten matches by bonus points, with Korbin Myers (133 lbs.), Matthews (165 lbs.), Ty Schoffstall (174 lbs.), and Miller (hwt.) winning by fall.
 
The Fighting Scots return to EWL action next weekend, wrestling at Rider on Friday, January 20 and at George Mason on Sunday, January 22.
