The Game Story
  • Edinboro opened the 2017-18 season against Thiel for the second straight season. The Fighting Scots prevailed, 86-77, as Keyshawn Liggins scored 34 points in his first game as a Fighting Scot. Jaymon Mason and Anthony Coleman added 14 points apiece.
  • The Fighting Scots open up PSAC action with the weekend's crossover contests. Millersville was 9-17 last year and comes in with a 1-2 record after suffering a one-point loss to Wilmington on Wednesday.
  • Shippensburg is off to a 2-0 start and is ranked eighth in the NABC Division II Preseason Top 25. The Red Raiders won the PSAC championship last year and reached the second round of the NCAA Atlantic Regional. They would end the year with a 27-4 record, a school-record for victories.
  • Edinboro looks to rebound from an 8-18 finish in 2016-17, as numerous injuries greatly impacted the squad. The Fighting Scots were recently picked to finish eighth in the PSAC Western Division in the coaches' preseason poll after finishing eighth a year ago. 
  • Head coach Pat Cleary is his fifth season in charge of the Fighting Scots. He owns a 448-58 career record. His first three squads all showed improvement in their final record prior to last year's injury-ravaged season. The 2015-16 Fighting Scot edition went 15-11 and came in third in the PSAC West.
  • Redshirt senior guard Jaymon Mason enters the season ranked fifth in career scoring and boosted his total to 1,546 career points in the opener. Kenny Tate is in fourth place with 1,552 career points, and  Tim Smiley is third with 1,533 points. Mason was recently named a Division II Bulletin preseason honorable mention All-American. He is a two-time Division II Bulletin honorable mention All-American and earned first team All-PSAC West accolades as a junior and senior.

  • The Edinboro-Millersville and Edinboro-Shippensburg games can be heard on WFSE-FM 88.9, with Gabe Hypes on the play-by-play. Jared Wayman will provide the color commentary on Saturday and Dakota Palmer on Sunday. In addition, this year Edinboro will be part of the PSAC Network. All men's and women's basketball games will be streamed live through Stretch Internet.

Nov. 19, 2016 – Millersville 79, Edinboro 71 at Millersville BOX | RECAP
  • Jaymon Mason joined the 1,000-point club, but despite a 16-point, 10-rebound effort, the Fighting Scots fell at Pucillo Gymnasium.
  • Edinboro trailed for much of the game but would pull to within three points at 72-69 on a 3-pointer by Malachy Onwudiegwu with 1:43 to play. The Fighting Scots did not score again until 24 seconds remained.
  • Edinboro held a 54-34 lead on the glass and held Millersville to 35.5 percent from the floor. However, Millersville connected on 15-of-34 3-pointers, while Edinboro was 6-of-21.
  • Chibunna Ukandu and Mike Beck added 15 and 13 points, respectively, for the Fighting Scots. Andre Frederick pulled down 10 rebounds.
  • Conrad Chambers scored a game-high 24 points for Millersville, connecting on 5-of-10 3-pointers and 9-of-10 free throws. Marcus Adkison added 16 points, while Cornell Yarde II posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  
Nov. 20, 2016 – Shippensburg 105, Edinboro 73 at Shippensburg BOX | RECAP
  • The Red Raiders opened the game on a 22-3 run and the deficit never got under double digits. The Fighting Scots scored the next eight points but Shippensburg would lead 53-33 at the half.
  • Five Red Raiders scored in double figures, with two tallying double-doubles. Antonio Kellem connected on 6-of-7 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 25 points, adding eight rebounds. Dustin Sleva had 23 points and 10 boards. John Castello finished with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Justin McCarthur had 12 points, while Chris Mwandu added 10 markers.
  • Chibunna Ukandu paced Edinboro with 13 points, going 5-for-10 from the field and 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Andre Frederick logged his first career double-double as a Fighting Scot with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Malachy Onwudiegwu was also in double figures with 11 points. Jaymon Mason was held to six points, going 2-for-10 from the field and 1-for-6 from downtown.Shippensburg shot 57.6 percent from the field (38-for-66), and 44.0 percent from 3-point range (11-for-25), while the Fighting Scots finished at 41.5 percent from the floor (27-for-65) and made 10-for-23 3-pointers. 
The Head Coaches
Edinboro: Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 48-58, 5th Year
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. A year ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
Millersville: Casey Stitzel (Widener '05) -- 10-19, 2nd year; 126-115, 10th Year Overall
  • Casey Stitzel was named Millersville's head coach in May 2016. He guided the Marauders to a 9-17 finish in his first campaign, an improvement of five wins from the previous season.
  • Stitzel took over after serving the previous eight seasons as the head coach at Delaware Valley. He departed as the winningest coach in Delaware Valley and was a two-time MAC Freedom Coach of the Year. He led the Aggies to three MAC Freedom championships and three NCAA Division III Tournaments.
Shippensburg: Chris Fite (Rochester '92) -- 65-50, 5th year
  • After serving as an assistant coach at IUP from 2006-13, Chriis Fite took over as the head coach at Shippensburg in 2013. His first team went 3-23, but he has now built the Red Raiders into one of the top teams in Division II.
  • The Red Raiders have enjoyed back-to-back 20-win campaigns, including 27-4 a year ago, a school record for wins.
  • Fite was named the PSAC East Coach of the Year and NABC Atlantic District Coach of the Year. Shippensburg won its second PSAC title with a 73-63 win over Kutztown, and reached the second round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional.
  • Shippensburg defeated Virginia Union, 79-59, in the first round of the regional tournament before suffering a 97-91 loss to Wheeling Jesuit.

Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • A pair of transfers played a large role in Edinboro's season-opening 86-77 win over Thiel. Keyshawn Liggins, a senior who played last year at Idaho State, and junior Anthony Coleman from Cincinnati State CC, combined for 48 points.
  • Liggins, a 6'5" forward, led all scorers with 34 points, making 12-of-19 field goals, including 1-of-3 three's, and 9-of-12 free throws.  He added seven rebounds. Coleman made 6-of-9 field goal attempts to finish with 14 points. The 6'3" guard played just 21 minutes due to foul trouble. The duo combined for 10 points as Edinboro closed the game on a 12-4 run after a gritty Thiel squad made the score 74-73 with 3:25 to play. Liggins scored six points and Coleman four.
  • Pre-season All-American Jaymon Mason was at less than 100 percent due to an injury, but still managed to contribute 14 points and six rebounds. All of Mason's points came in the second half, including a pair of free throws that broke Bryan Theriot's school record for career free throws made.
  • Mason now has 406 career free throws. Theriot finished his career with 402. Mason boosted his career points total to 1,546 points, good for fifth place. He needs seven points to move past Kenny Tate into fourth place, and eight points will move him past Tim Smiley for third all-time.
  • Edinboro ended the 2016-17 season with an 8-18 record. That included a 6-16 record in league contests, as the Fighting Scots finished eighth in the PSAC West and failed to make the conference tournament after qualifying the previous two years.
  • Edinboro was picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll.
  • The Fighting Scots return a pair of starters in seniors Jaymon Mason and Mike Beck. Mason, a 6'3" guard, finished second in the PSAC and 11th in Division II in scoring at 23.0 ppg. He averaged 20 ppg. for the second straight year. He also led the Fighting Scots in assists (144) and 3-pointers made 72-of-178. Mason was a first team All-PSAC West selection for the second straight year and also was named to the Division II Bulletin honorable mention All-American team for the second straight campaign.  
  • Beck is a 6'4" swingman who joined Mason as a starter in all 26 games. He averaged 6.7 ppg. and 3.1 rpg. He has started 52 straight games.
  • Maceo Baston II is another key returner. A slender 6'5" senior, the juco transfer averaged 6.7 ppg. and 3.5 rpg. in his first season as a Fighting Scot. However, he started the final nine games of the season and averaged 14.2 ppg. and 5.0 rpg. during that stretch.
  • Edinboro welcomes back Jack Frank in the middle. A 6'8" junior, he started the first 11 contests before going down with a season-ending injury. While averaging just 3.5 ppg., he was the team's top rebounder at 5.7 per game before going down.
  • A pair of transfers figure to play major roles this year. Keyshawn Liggins is a transfer from Idaho State. A 6'5" swingman, the senior also played at Big Bend JC. Anthony Coleman is a 6'3" junior by way of Cincinnati State CC. He averaged 18.2 ppg. and 5.1 rpg. with 67 3-pointers a year ago.    
  • Two local freshman could also see extended action in a reserve role. Alex Jay is a 6'3" guard who played at General McLane High School and scored over 1,000 career points. Jaryn Simpson is a 6'1" guard and a product of cathedral Prep.   
Scouting the Marauders
  • Millersville is 1-2 on the young season, opening the year with a pair of contests against Mountain East Conference opponents before losing to Wilmington on Wednesday, 76-75, in their home opener.
  • Millersville opened the year with a 107-99 double overtime win over Notre Dame(Oh.). The 107 points were the most since 2011. Conrad Chambers led the way with a career-high 29 points, making 13-of-14 free throws. Cadem Najdawi, a 6'8" freshman, recorded a double-double in his first career game with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
  • The next day, the Marauders fell to Fairmont State, the 2017 NCAA Division II national runner-up, 92-89 despite 25 points from Marcus Adkison.
  • Millersville was picked to finish eighth in the PSAC East Coaches Preseason Poll. 
  • Marcus Adkison led Millersville in scoring a year ago. The 5'11" junior averaged 15.4 ppg. and made 77 3-pointers in 199 attempts. That ranked seventh in a season at Millersville. He was fifth in the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game. Adkison began his career at Shepherd before transferring to Millersville.
  • Conrad Chambers, the team's second-leading scorer at 18.3 ppg., averaged 12.5 ppg. and 5.0 rpg. last year. A 6'0" senior, he played at Morgan State, then at Navarro College, before joining the Marauders a year ago. He is another 3-point threat, making 40-of-157 three's.
  • Mark Perry is another transfer. The 6'5" junior previously played at Lackawanna College, where he averaged 18.5 ppg. and 9.8 rpg. in 2015-16.    
Scouting the Red Raiders
  • Shippensburg returned four of five starters from last year's 27-4 edition, and is ranked eighth in NABC Division II Preseason Top 25. The Red Raiders are off to a 2-0 start after defeating Shaw (65-53) and Virginia Union (78-72 in OT) in the Wolf's Bus Lines Classic. The latter contest was a rematch of the first round of last year's NCAA Atlantic Regional.
  • Shippensburg plays at Slippery Rock on Saturday before heading to Edinboro on Sunday.
  • MAll-American Dustin Sleva leads the Red Raiders. The 6'8" senior was the PSAC East Player of the Year and became Shippensburg's first NABC first team All-American. He set a school record record for points in a season with 674, an average of 21.7 ppg., while leading the PSAC in rebounding (11.0 rpg.). He finished second in Division II with 20 double-doubles. Sleva added 105 assists and made 57-of-140 3-pointers. He was named the MVP of the Wolf's Bus Lines Classic after totaling 46 points and 26 rebounds in the two games.
  • Junior Justin McCarthur earned second team All-PSAC East accolades. A 6'0", 210 lb. guard, he averaged 15.9 ppg., good for the second on the team, and led the team in 3-pointers with 101 in 249 attempts. He was an all-tourney selection this past weekend, as was senior guard Clay Conner.

  • CAREER 3-POINTERS: Is tied for third in career 3-pointers made with 168 3-pointers made and is seventh in career 3-pointers attempted with 431. Is also seventh in career 3-point field goal percentage at 39.0 percent 
  • CAREER FREE THROWS MADE: Broke Bryan Theriot's school record of 402 free throws made in the season opener. Mason now holds the record with 406.   
  • CAREER FREE THROWS ATTEMPTED:  Ranks fifth with 479 free throw attempts.
  • CAREER FREE THROW PERCENTAGE:  Ranks third at 84.6 percent
  • CAREER ASSISTS:  Ranks ninth with 318
