INDIANA, Pa. – The fifth-seeded Edinboro University women's tennis team made their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance this afternoon, falling to fourth-seeded West Virginia State by a score of 5-2 in the Atlantic Region Semifinals. The Fighting Scots conclude their remarkable 2016-17 campaign with a 11-7 overall record. Tuesday's semifinals contest was forced indoors after heavy rains forced a delay.
With the victory, West Virginia State moves on to play host and top-seeded Indiana (Pa.) tomorrow afternoon.
The Fighting Scots have plenty to hang their hats on this season. In addition to receiving their first ever NCAA Tournament berth, the Fighting Scots made the PSAC Tournament for the first time since 2003 and for the first time ever under head coach
Lee Underwood. Underwood was named the PSAC West Women's Tennis Coach of the Year for his efforts.
Tatiana Batalla Trabal and
Julia Hellstern both earned All-PSAC West second team honors.
The duo of Batalla Trabal and Hellstern recorded the Fighting Scots first win of the afternoon, defeating West Virginia State's Marta Yevstakhevych and Kayla McKnight by a score of 8-3. The pairing finished the season with a team-high 14-6 record.
The team of
Anastasiya Dasik and
Jelena Vucenovic was nearly able to pull out another victory before dropping a hotly contested 8-6 affair to the pairing of Nina Dillwald and Lindsay Goff.
Dasik picked up the Fighting Scots lone singles win on the day, defeating Goff by scores of 6-2 & 6-3. The senior finished up her season with a 13-6 singles mark.
