Fighting Scots Limited to Two Monroe Field Goals in 24-6 Loss at Mercyhurst

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  Mercyhurst 24, Edinboro 6
  • Records:  Edinboro (4-2, 1-2 PSAC West), Mercyhurst (2-4, 1-2 PSAC West)
  • Location:  Erie, Pa. -- Tullio Field
  • The Short Story:  Mercyhurst jumped out to a 10-0 lead after one quarter, extended it to 24-6 at the half, and then the defenses settled in for a scoreless second half. The Lakers used a ball control attack to keep Edinboro off the field while scoring on their first three possessions, featuring tailback Garrett Owens, who finished with 148 yards on 30 carries, including a 13-yard TD run. He added a 60-yard TD reception from Doug Altavilla. The Lakers held a 36:39 to 23:21 advantage in time of possession and converted on 6-of-11 3rd-down plays, compared to 3-of-13 for Edinboro. Freshman placekicker Jake Monroe accounted for Edinboro's points on field goals of 23 and 25 yards.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A big special teams play had Mercyhurst in scoring position on the opening kickoff. Dante' Redwood brought the kickoff back 67 yards to the EU 33. The Lakers would score an apparent touchdown that was negated by a penalty, and the Edinboro defense dug in. Ethan Upperco's sack on a 3rd-and-goal from the EU 9 forced the Lakers to settle for three points. Matt Schafer's 26-yard field goal made it 3-0 at 11:10 of the first quarter.
  • The Lakers put together their longest drive of the day on their second possession, most of it coming on one play from Altavilla to Garrett Owens. Facing a 3rd-and-21, Edinboro flushed Altavilla out of the pocket, but he found Owens in front of the Edinboro bench. Owens did the rest, either hurdling or running through several Boro tacklers for a 60-yard TD catch. The seven-play, 84-yard drive put Mercyhurst up 10-0 at 5:07 of the first quarter.
  • Edinboro would drive down to the Mercyhurst 26 on the next possession, but the ten-play drive ended with Walter Fletcher inches short of a first down at the MU 24. Seven plays and 76 yards later, the Lakers were up 17-0. Owens again did the honors, scoring on a 13-yard run on a 3rd-and-3 play with 12:10 left in the second quarter. The big redshirt sophomore carried four times for 51 yards in the drive.
  • Edinboro cut the deficit to 17-3 on Jake Monroe's 23-yard field goal with 10:04 remaining in the half. The six-play, 73-yard drive featured a 55-yard hookup from Andrew Tomko to A.J. Turner. The Fighting Scots reached the six yard line before settling for three points.
  • Following a Mercyhurst punt, Edinboro again drove deep into Lakers' territory but again came away with just three points. A 48-yard pass from Tomko to Andre' Dowdell gave Edinborop a first down at the MU 12. Fletcher gained six on first down, but a sack and an incomplete pass forced Edinboro to a attempt a 25-yard field goal. Monroe, a freshman, converted to make it 17-6 with 2:48 to play in the half.
  • Any comeback hopes Edinboro may have had were demoralized when the Lakers scored with just 11.8 seconds remaining, capping a 10-lay, 65-yard drive. Mercyhurst converted twice on third down, the second on a 22-yard TD pass from Altavilla to backup tailback Fredrick Green. The screen pass came with Mercyhurst facing a 3rd-and-15. The Lakers went into halftime ahead 24-6.
  • Neither team would score in the second half, although both teams had the ball in the others' territory three times. Edinboro reached the MU 19 before eventually throwing an interception; turned the ball on downs at the MU 44, and threw an interception in the end zone in the final minute after driving to the four.
BY THE NUMBERS

DID YOU KNOW
  • Edinboro did not score a touchdown for the first time since a 19-0 loss at Indiana(Pa.) on October 1, 2011.
  • The Fighting Scots came into the game ranked second in Division II in turnover margin while leading the country in turnovers gained and interceptions. Mercyhurst, meanwhile, had yet to register an interception in the first five games. The Lakers would win the turnover battle with three interceptions while Edinboro came up with one fumble recovery late in the game.
  • Mercyhurst held a very deceiving 1-4 record coming into the game. The combined record of their five opponents was 19-6, with one at 5-0 and three others at 4-1. They had a season-high of 21 points scored.
  • Walter Fletcher failed to score a touchdown for the first time this season. The redshirt junior had scored at least one touchdown in each of the first five games and had 9 TDs coming into the game.
  • Edinboro was attempting to sweep local rivals Gannon and Mercyhurst for the second time in the last three years. They swept both in 2016. Edinboro has won both games against Gannon and Mercyhurst four times since they joined the PSAC in 2008, with it also occurring in 2009 and 2011. Edinboro had won the last two meetings with the Lakers.
  • Jake Monroe kicked a pair of field goals against Mercyhurst. He had attempted just two all year, making one. Monroe is the first kicker to make field goals in a game since Austin Reese made two against Gannon in 2016.
  • Alex Molik had started 29 straight games at left tackle before sitting out the Mercyhurst game. Redshirt freshman Justin Kasmierski made his first career start, giving Edinboro three redshirt freshmen starters on the offensive line.
THE RECORD BOOK
  • James Clark continued to inch toward Darren Massey's career receptions record. The senior caught 3 passes for 16 yards, giving him 190 for his career. He needs five more to break Massey's record of 194. He boosted his career receiving yards total to 2,571 yards, which ranks second.
  • Ta'Nauz Gregory ended with 8 receptions for 65 yards, moving up one spot to sixth in career receptions with 146. He is just two behind Ernest Priester for fifth place. The junior also moved up one spot to seventh in career receiving yards with 2,013.
UP NEXT
  • The Fighting Scots will play on the road for the second straight week and the fifth time in the first seven games with a contest at Slippery Rock on Saturday, October 13. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. as Slippery Rock celebrates Homecoming.
  • SRU comes in with a 5-1 record after upsetting 14th-ranked Indiana(Pa.), 30-27.
  • A year ago, Edinboro won a 49-39 decision over then 17th-ranked Slippery Rock for a second straight win over The Rock.  .
