The Game Story
  • Edinboro heads out on the road for the first time in 2018-19 after opening the season with an 81-63 win over Thiel at McComb Fieldhouse on Saturday night. Lake Erie, members of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, is 2-1 after an 88-65 win Central State on Wednesday night.
  • Head coach Pat Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year after leading Edinboro to an 18-11 record a year ago. It marked the finest year of his five-year reign after Edinboro had been picked to finish eighth in the Western Division. The Fighting Scots would finish 13-9 in PSAC action, good for fourth place. They went on to defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round, followed by an upset of top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) in the quarterfinals. Edinboro would lose to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals.
  • Cleary has his work cut out for him in 2018-19 after suffering major losses. Gone are leading scorers Keshawn Liggins (23.8 ppg, 10.4 rpg.) and Jaymon Mason (16.3 ppg.), both first team All-PSAC selections, along with three-year starter Mike Beck (6.3 ppg.). The trio combined for 1,348 points, or just over 58 percent of the team's scoring.
  • Edinboro will greatly rely on returning second team All-PSAC West selection Anthony Coleman. The 6'3" guard emerged as one of the top 3-point threats in the PSAC in his first season. He finished third on the team and 24th in the PSAC in scoring at 15.2 ppg., while leading the team in 3-pointers, making 72-of-174 (41.4 pct.). He ranked sixth in the PSAC in 3-point field goal percentage and was tied for seventh in 3-point field goals made per game (2.5).
  • Several newcomers are expected to make immediate impact, including junior college transfers Daylon Harris and DeAnthony Owens. Harris is a 6'5" junior who played at Western Nebraska CC, while Owens, a 6'4" junior, played at New Mexico JC.
  • Sophomore guard Jaryn Simpson stepped up in the season opening win over Thiel with career-highs of 22 points and 6 assists.

Last Meeting
Nov. 25, 2017 – Edinboro 70, Lake Erie 66 at Edinboro, Ohio    BOX SCORE | RECAP
  • Keyshawn Liggins scored 35 points and Edinboro rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit for a 70-66 win over Lake Erie at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots improved to 4-0, the best start since the 2012-13 team won its first five games, and the best under fifth-year head coach Pat Cleary.
  • The game featured 44 fouls, 22 on each team, along with 12 tied and four lead changes. The Storm was looking for their second straight win over a PSAC team from northwestern Pennsylvania after defeating Mercyhurst on Wednesday.
  • The Storm appeared on their way to doing just that when they took a 33-29 lead at the half, then expanded it to 50-41 with 13:46 remaining thanks to a 15-6 run.
  • Edinboro responded with the next 12 points to take a 52-50 lead with 9:38 to play. Mike Beck started the run with a layup, followed by a pair of free throws by Trey Staunch. Following a Lake Erie turnover, Liggins' layup made it 50-47. Jaryn Simpson was fouled while attempting a 3-pointer and made all three free throws to knot the score at 50-50. The freshman guard then scored on a jumper to give the Scots the lead.
  • The game would be tied on two more occasions, but Edinboro never trailed after that. The Fighting Scots would take their largest lead of the game at seven points on two occasions, the last at 65-58 with 2:04 to play on a Jaymon Mason jumper.
  • Lake Erie would close the contest to within a point with six seconds to play, as the Storm ran off five straight points to close to 67-66. Liggins would make three-of-four free throws to close out the win.
  • A 6'5" transfer from Idaho State, Liggins made 13-of-25 field goals, including both 3-point attempts, and went 7-for-9 at the line. He scored 22 of Edinboro's first 29 points as the Scots battled foul trouble. Liggins also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for his third straight double-double.
  • After a horrendous start, Mason stepped up big down the stretch. Edinboro's third all-time leading scorer, the senior guard missed his first 10 shots and had just three free throws over the first 31 minutes.  He would warm up over the final nine minutes, making four of his final five shots, including a big 3-pointer, to finish with 13 points.
  • Simpson came off the bench to contribute 10 points and a team-high four assists in 18 minutes. He enjoyed a perfect day shooting, making all three of his field goal attempts, including a 3-pointer, and going 3-for-3 at the line.
  • Edinboro would shoot 40.0 percent from the floor (24-of-60), and while lake Erie shot 44.4 percent (24-of-54), the Storm converted just 2-of-11 3-point attempts. Both teams made 16 free throws, with Edinboro attempting 24 and Lake Erie 22. Edinboro held a slight 36-35 edge on the glass, but forced 18 turnovers while committing just 12.
  • Gabe Kynard led Lake Erie with 16 points and eight rebounds, with Michael Morris adding 10 points. With Beck drawing the defensive assignment, LEC's leading scorer, Ryan Middendorf (14.6 ppg.) was held to five points.
The Head Coaches
Edinboro: Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 66-69, 6th Year
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. Two years ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February.
  • The 2017-18 Fighting Scots were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They would surprise the league with a fourth place finish at 13-9 in league play, and 18-11 overall. Edinboro would defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament, then hand top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) a defeat in the quarterfinals. The playoff run came to an end with a loss to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals. It marked Edinboro's first appearance in the PSAC Final Four since 2008.
  • Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year. The 18 wins were the most by the Fighting Scots since the 2012-13 team won 18 games.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
Lake Erie: Kyle Conley (Findlay) -- 22-39, 3rd year; 22-39, 3rd Year Overall
  • Former Findlay standout Kyle Conley is in his third season as the head coach at Lake Erie after serving as an assistant coach since 2009.
  • Conley's first Lake Erie squad was 4-24, but the Storm rebounded to post a 16-14 record last year. The Storm finished 10-10 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. They entered the postseason tournament as the No. 7 seed, and would upset second-seeded Walsh in the quarterfinals, 76-67, before falling to Hillsdale, 75-63, in the semifinals.
  • Conley served four years as an assistant coach at his alma mater before joining the Lake Erie staff.

Liggins led the PSAC in scoring at 23.8 ppg. and was third in rebounding at 10.4 ppg. Beck was a three-year starter who was the 2018 PSAC Champion Scholar.
