The Game Story
  • Edinboro is hoping to feast on lion, not turkey, on Tuesday night as Penn State Shenango makes its first-ever trip to McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots come off a turkey of an effort at Lake Erie, as they suffered a 74-60 loss on Saturday to see their record even at 1-1. They opened the 2018-19 season with an 81-63 win over Thiel at McComb Fieldhouse on November 10. Penn State Shenango, members of the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference, is 1-2, opening the season with a 73-68 win over Akron Wayne before suffering back-to-back losses to Point Park (87-55 and 68-63).
  • Head coach Pat Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year after leading Edinboro to an 18-11 record a year ago. It marked the finest year of his five-year reign after Edinboro had been picked to finish eighth in the Western Division. The Fighting Scots would finish 13-9 in PSAC action, good for fourth place. They went on to defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round, followed by an upset of top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) in the quarterfinals. Edinboro would lose to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals.
  • Cleary has his work cut out for him in 2018-19 after suffering major losses. Gone are leading scorers Keshawn Liggins (23.8 ppg, 10.4 rpg.) and Jaymon Mason (16.3 ppg.), both first team All-PSAC selections, along with three-year starter Mike Beck (6.3 ppg.). The trio combined for 1,348 points, or just over 58 percent of the team's scoring.
  • Edinboro will greatly rely on returning second team All-PSAC West selection Anthony Coleman. The 6'3" guard emerged as one of the top 3-point threats in the PSAC in his first season. He finished third on the team and 24th in the PSAC in scoring at 15.2 ppg., while leading the team in 3-pointers, making 72-of-174 (41.4 pct.). He ranked sixth in the PSAC in 3-point field goal percentage and was tied for seventh in 3-point field goals made per game (2.5).
  • Several newcomers are expected to make immediate impact, including junior college transfers Daylon Harris and DeAnthony Owens. Harris is a 6'5" junior who played at Western Nebraska CC, while Owens, a 6'4" junior, played at New Mexico JC.
  • Sophomore guard Jaryn Simpson stepped up in the season opening win over Thiel with career-highs of 22 points and 6 assists.
  • The Fighting Scots welcomed back Trey Staunch at Lake Erie. The senior forward missed the Thiel game while wrapping up his final season of football, but played 15 minutes against Lake Erie, leading Edinboro with 14 points.

The Head Coaches
Edinboro: Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 66-70, 6th Year
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. Two years ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February.
  • The 2017-18 Fighting Scots were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They would surprise the league with a fourth place finish at 13-9 in league play, and 18-11 overall. Edinboro would defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament, then hand top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) a defeat in the quarterfinals. The playoff run came to an end with a loss to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals. It marked Edinboro's first appearance in the PSAC Final Four since 2008.
  • Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year. The 18 wins were the most by the Fighting Scots since the 2012-13 team won 18 games.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
Penn State Shenango: Andre Smith Sr. (Youngstown State) -- 1-2, 1st year
  • Andre Smith Sr. began his first year at Penn State Shenango in the spring of 2017 as the director of athletics and head men's basketball coach.  He has over 20 years of experience coaching at all levels—from Division III to professional.
  • Prior to being named the head coach at Penn State Shenango, Smith worked with USA Jones Cup, where he coached and worked on player development for U.S. and international professional prospects.
  • Before his stint with USA Jones Cup, Smith was the athletic director and head men's basketball coach at Lourdes University (2009-2016), an NAIA school located in Sylvania, Ohio. Smith built the entire university's Athletic Department from the ground up—starting with two varsity teams and finishing with 16. During his tenure, three teams made appearances in the National Tournament. Smith quickly brought national attention to the University and his first-year program, beating a nationally-ranked NAIA team in 2010.
  • During his tenure, he compiled four straight winning seasons while leading the country in team defense and points allowed in four straight seasons.

Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro opened the 2018-19 campaign with an 81-63 win over Thiel on Saturday, November 10, before dropping a 74-60 decision at Lake Erie this past Saturday.
  • Against Thiel, the Fighting Scots took control of the game midway through the second half. Leading 56-52 with just over 11 minutes remaining, Edinboro outscored the Tomcats 17-4 over the next five minutes to take control of the game.
  • Sophomore guard Jaryn Simpson led Edinboro with career-highs of 22 points and 6 assists. He went 8-for-9 from the charity stripe. Daylon Harris added 15 points and 8 rebounds, while DeAnthony Owens contributed 14 points. Anthony Coleman had 13 points, 11 in the first half, along with 8 rebounds.
  • The Fighting Scots struggled to find the basket at Lake Erie, shooting just 28.1 from the floor. Edinboro would never lead in the contest as the Storm used a 25-7 run to start the second half after leading by ten at intermission.
  • One bright spot for Edinboro on Saturday was the first appearance of the season by senior Trey Staunch. The 6'4", 280 lb. forward did not play against Thiel after wrapping up his football career earlier that day. Earlier in the week he was named a second team All-PSAC West selection at offensive tackle, and after a few practices, he played 15 minutes at Lake Erie. zhe did not show much rust at all, making 5-of-7 field goals and 4-of-5 free throws to finish with a team-high 14 points.
  • Edinboro ended the 2017-18 season with an 18-11 record. That included a 13-9 record in league contests, as the Fighting Scots finished fourth in the PSAC West after being picked to finish eighth in the coaches' preseason poll.
  • Edinboro was once again picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll this year.
  • The Fighting Scots must replace three starters, and two nof the top players to perform in recent years in Jaymon Mason, Keshawn Liggins, and Mike Beck. Mason and Liggins were first team All-PSAC West selections a year, with Mason departing as Edinboro's all-time leading scorer with 2,005 points. Liggins led the PSAC in scoring at 23.8 ppg. and was third in rebounding at 10.4 ppg. Beck was a three-year starter who was the 2018 PSAC Champion Scholar.
  • The Fighting Scots return a pair of starters in seniors Anthony Coleman and Jack Frank. Coleman, a 6'3" guard, is one of the top 3-point threats in the PSAC. Frank is a 6'8" senior known for his rebounding and defense. He was second on the team in rebounding at 5.8 rpg., and had a team-high 29 blocks.
  • Other returnees include sophomores Jaryn Simpson and Alex Jay. Simpson, a 6'2" guard, will likely assume the point guard job after averaging 3.4 ppg. with 52 assists a year ago. Jay, a 6'3" guard, added 3.5 ppg.
  • Several newcomers are expected to make immediate impact, including junior college transfers Daylon Harris and DeAnthony Owens. Harris is a 6'5" junior who played at Western Nebraska CC, while Owens, a 6'4" junior, played at New Mexico JC.
  • Among the freshmen, Turner Kurt is a 6'8" forward from nearby Cambridge Springs, Pa. He contributed 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 rebounds against Thiel, and had a team-high 8 rebounds at Lake Erie.
