Fighting Scots Rally for 11-8 Victory to Hand Jenny Wirth Win in First Match as Head Coach

EDINBORO, Pa. – A young Edinboro women's lacrosse team rallied for an 11-8 win over Wheeling Jesuit on Friday evening to hand interim head coach Jenny Wirth a win in her debut as head coach. The loss dropped Wheeling Jesuit to 0-2 on the season.

A former Fighting Scot, Wirth assumed the role of interim head coach in late January. Her first contest came against a Wheeling Jesuit team that won the Mountain East Conference title a year ago. After taking an early 2-1 lead, she saw the Cardinals score five straight goals to take a 6-2 lead with 47 seconds left in the first half.

Edinboro's rally began with just seconds to go in the half, as freshman Anna Leva scored with six seconds remaining. The Fighting Scots opened the second half with a pair of goals to close to 6-5 less than eight minutes into the half. Lindsey Brinkel scored the first off a pass from Leva, and Stephanie Chido accounted for the second.

Wheeling Jesuit's Paige Orbell scored her third goal of the game at 20:13 to give the Cardinals a two-goal lead at 7-5. The teams then traded goals, with Leva scoring on a free position shot and WJU's Hayley Holmquist answered to make it 8-6 with 18:15 remaining.

Wheeling Jesuit would not score again, as freshman goalkeeper Candace McDole and a strong defense held the Cardinal attack at bay.

Edinboro, meanwhile, ran off the final five goals of the match. Olivia Thomas' first goal of the season on a free position shot made it 8-7, and the Fighting Scots pulled even at 8-8 on Leva's fourth goal of the match, assisted by Thomas.

Leva scored again at 9:06 to give the Scots the lead at 9-8. Another freshman, Sophie DePalma, boosted the margin to 10-8 when she fired a shot through the legs of goalkeeper Elizabeth Hanks, with Thomas assisting on the goal at the 4:01 mark. Edinboro would add an insurance goal with 2:36 to play as Leva notches her sixth goal of the match on a free position shot.

Edinboro would finish with a slight advantage in shots, 28-27, holding an 18-12 lead in the decisive second half. The Fighting Scots had 25 turnovers and Wheeling Jesuit 20.

Nine of Edinboro's 11 goals were scored by freshmen, with Leva scoring six goals, DePalma two, and Lindsey Brinkel one. Thomas had a goal and two assists and Chido had a goal. Orbell led Wheeling Jesuit with three goals. Kori Hickman had a goal and three assists.

McDole recorded 13 saves in her first contest in the net. Hanks had 10 for the Cardinals.

The Fighting Scots will look for win number two in the Wirth Era on Thursday, March 1 as Roberts Wesleyan visits Sox Harrison Stadium for a 4 p.m. contest.
