Leva Accounts for Nine Points But Roberts Wesleyan Hands Edinboro 12-11 Loss on Late Goal

EDINBORO, Pa. – A week ago the Edinboro women's lacrosse season opened its first season under Jenny Wirth with a come-from-behind win over Wheeling Jesuit. On Thursday in a match played in a steady rain with gusty winds, Edinboro's interim coach suffered a heartbreaking 12-11 loss when Roberts Wesleyan's Johannah Price scored with three seconds left in the match. Edinboro is now 1-1, while Roberts Wesleyan improved to 3-1.

Edinboro had rallied from a 10-8 deficit to tie the match at 10-10 on goals by Anna Leva with 8:07 to play and Sophie DePalma with 6:05 to play.

The teams combined for three goals in the final two minutes. Price scored on a free position shot with 1:55 to plot give the Redhawks an 11-10 lead. Leva answered, as she took a pass from DePalma with 1:21 left to knot the score at 11-11.

Edinboro would regain possession of the ball, but a turnover gave the ball back to Roberts Wesleyan. They would race up field, with Price cutting across the middle in front of goalkeeper Candace McDole and firing a shot into the upper right corner of the goal with three seconds to play.

The Fighting Scots would take a quick 2-1 lead, but the Redhawks answered with the next four goals for a 5-2 advantage with 12:33 to play. Edinboro rallied with four of the next five goals to knot the score at the half at 6-6. DePalma scored the last two goals off feeds from Leva.

Leva, a freshman, enjoyed her second straight strong effort, accounting for four goals and five assists for nine points. The nine points is tied for the third in a game at Edinboro. DePalma added three goals and an assist, with freshman Lindsey Brinkel also contributing three goals. Hannah Fitzgerald accounted for Edinboro's other goal, while Olivia Thomas had an assist.

Megan Burnham led Roberts Wesleyan with four goals, with Emily Tomei adding three goals and two assists.
Freshman Candace McDole had 15 saves in her second career start, which is tied for third in a game. Victoria Greco had 14 saves for the Redhawks.

???????Edinboro ended with a 34-31 advantage in shots. Both teams were plagued by turnovers, with Edinboro committing 33 and Roberts Wesleyan 28.

The Fighting Scots return to action on March 11, playing at Holy Family.
