Schoffstall, Miller Pick Up Wins in Evening Session of NCAA National Championships

Ty Schoffstall won by major decision over Devin Skatzka of Indiana
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The evening session of day number one of the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships at Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena did not begin the way Edinboro head coach Tim Flynn would have liked, but it ended on a positive note for the veteran coach. When the day was finished, Edinboro had four of its five wrestlers still alive heading into Friday, although all will be wrestling in the consolation bracket.  The Fighting Scots are tied for 33rd in the team standings

After opening the day with wins, Sean Russell (125 lbs.) and Korbin Myers (133 lbs.) lost by decision in their second round matches. Andrew Shomers was eliminated at 157 lbs. for a third loss in the evening session. But Ty Schoffstall and Billy Miller came up with big consolation wins at 174 and 285 lbs., respectively, to end the evening in a strong fashion.

"We still have four guys left who are hungry to continue," noted Flynn. "Billy started to put some points on and had some good take downs in the first period to get ahead early. Ty didn't quit and really poured on some points to get the major. We look forward to him continuing with that tomorrow. These guys have a lot of work to do tomorrow and we will rest up tonight and get them ready for their matches."

Russell, the #11 seed, faced a familiar foe in Oklahoma State's Nick Piccininni (24-3) with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line. The two had split four previous matches in their career, but the sixth-seeded Piccininni was able to get the upper hand with a takedown following a scramble with 1:20 left in the first period. A Russell escape made it 2-1 after one period. Piccininni added an escape in the second period and would record his second takedown with 1:11 left. Russell made it 5-2 with an escape with 20 seconds remaining. He would add an escape 30 seconds into the third, but the only other point was for riding time for Piccininni. Russell is now 31-6 and moves into the consolation round.

While Russell was battling Piccininni, the next mat over #14 seed Myers looked to upset third-seeded Luke Pletcher of Ohio State. The redshirt sophomore faced a similar fate as Russell in the first period, giving up a takedown before recording an escape for a 2-1 deficit after one period. Myers was strong on top in the second, but Pletcher eventually registered a reversal for a 4-1 advantage with just under a minute left. A Myers' escape made it 4-2 after two periods. He added ab escape to start the third to close top 4-3, then pressured Pletcher the rest of the period, but could never record the winning takedown. Myers is now 28-10 and will compete in the consolation round, while Pletcher improved to 29-2.

Shomers saw his first appearance at Nationals come to an end at 157 lbs. following a 9-1 loss by major decision to Army's Luke Weiland (23-17). Weiland would win out following a long scramble with two minutes left in the first period for a takedown, and added two near fall points for a 4-0 lead. Shomers rode out Weiland in the second period, but Weiland was tough on top and turned Shomers for four points midway through the third. Shomers would escape late in the match. The redshirt sophomore sees his first season as a starter come to an end with a 29-8 record.

Schoffstall turned in an impressive performance in the evening session with a 13-5 major decision over Devin Skatzka (22-14) of Indiana at 174 lbs. He grabbed a 4-2 lead after one period thanks to a pair of takedowns, and added a third in the second period with 30 seconds remaining following an escape by Skatzka midway through the period. The redshirt senior closed out the match with a strong third period. He opend the period with a reversal to make it 8-3, then added two more takedowns. Schoffstall had 2:48 in riding time while boosting his record to 22-4.

Miller wrapped up the night by controlling the action in  an 8-4 decision over Fresno State's AJ Nevills (26-10) at heavyweight. Miller opened with a takedown 30 seconds into the bout, and while Nevills would escape, the Edinboro redshirt junior registered a second takedown with six seconds left for a 4-1 lead.  A pair of Nevills' escapes bracketed Miller's third takedown of the match in the second period. Miller would flip Nevills for a reversal midway through the third period, with the scoring ending on a Nevills escape with 24 seconds remaining.  Miller moves on with a 17-5 record.

Billy Miller entered as the 13th seed at heavyweight, facing Purdue's Shawn Streck (29-13). The redshirt junior would drop an 11-5 decision in a match that was much closer than the final score indicated. After a scoreless first period, Miller pulled ahead with an escape and takedown. He would give up a penalty point (locked hands) and an escape, and with just under 20 seconds left in the period, Streck made it 4-3 with a takedown. Streck escaped to start the third period, then registered three takedowns to pull away, two coming in the final 30 seconds. Miller is now 16-5.
