Three Fighting Scots Accorded 2017 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-American Honors

Hendrick Named to First Team; Fletcher on Second an Clark on Third

BROOKFIELD, Ill. — The Don Hansen Football Gazette Committee has released the 2017 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-American Team, with three Edinboro players being recognized.  Cornerback Zuril Hendrick leads the way as a first team selection. Running back Walter Fletcher was accorded second team honors and wide receiver James Clark was named to the third team.  Hendrick and Fletcher were previously named to the All-Super Region 1 first team, with Clark a second team honoree. 
 
2017 Harlon Hill Trophy winner Luis Perez of Texas A&M-Commerce was named the Offensive Player of the Year, with Slippery Rock's Marcus Martin named the Defensive Player of the Year. Assumption's Deonte Harris was selected the Special Teams Player of the Year, with Austin Ryan of Bentley the Freshman of the Year, and Pete Shinnick of West Florida and IUP's Paul Tortorella being named Co-Coaches of the Year.
 
Edinboro ended the 2017 campaign under head coach Wayne Bradford with a 7-4 record, the second-highest win total among first-year coaches at Edinboro.
 
Hendrick led Division II in interceptions per game, picking off his ninth pass against Cheyney in the season finale. That tied the season record for interceptions. He also set a new school record for return yardage with 201 yards. He returned two of the interceptions for touchdowns, a 61-yarder vs. Lake Erie and a 35-yarder against Clarion.

RB Walter Fletcher
The junior cornerback, a second team All-PSAC West selection, finished fifth on the team in tackles with 59, with two for losses. In addition to his nine interceptions, he broke up 10 passes, and ranked third in the PSAC and fourth in Division II in passed defended. He added a fumble recovery, a forced fumble, and blocked a kick.
 
The junior cornerback had three pickoffs vs. Lake Erie, one shy of the school record. He added a pair of interceptions vs. Clarion.
 
Fletcher, a redshirt sophomore, racked up numerous honors this year after a record-setting campaign. He was previously named to the 2017 D2CCA All-America Team, the 2017 Associated Press Division II All-America Team, and the 2017 D2Football.com All-America Team. In addition, he was selected to the All-PSAC first team after earning second team honors a year ago.
 
Fletcher ran for a school-record 1,740 yards on 253 carries, which ranks fifth in a season. He was third on the team in receiving with 30 catches for 160 yards. He scored 18 touchdowns, rushing, good for third in a season, and added three touchdowns receiving for 21 total touchdowns.
 
The 5'9", 195 lb. running back ranked second in Division II in rushing yards, along with ranking second nationally in rushing yards per game (158.2 ypg.). In addition, he ranked second in the PSAC and sixth in Division II in total touchdowns, along with second and ninth, respectively, in total points scored (126). He was second in the PSAC and seventh in the country in rushing TDs, second and sixth, respectively, in scoring (11.5 ppg.), and second in the PSAC and 13th nationally in rush yards per carry (6.9). He was also third in the PSAC and tenth in Division II in all-purpose yards (172.73 ypg.).
 
Fletcher rushed for 100-or-more yards in eight of 11 games, including a school-record four games with 200-or-more yards. He had back-to-back 200-yards, with 241 yards and 4 TDs on 25 carries in a 49-39 upset of 17th-ranked Slippery Rock, followed a week later by a 238-yard, 29-carry, 4-TD effort at Seton Hill. The two games rank sixth and seventh, respectively, in the single-game rushing records. He added 230 yards and 2 TDs on 30 carries vs. Clarion, and ended the year with 213 yards on 29 carries with 2 TDs at Cheyney. He had nine runs of 50-or-more yards, including a 98-yard burst for a touchdown against Slippery Rock.
 
After just two seasons, Fletcher is already seventh in career rushing with 2,289 yards. He also ranks seventh in career rushing TDs (24).

WR James Clark
While Fletcher was rewriting the rushing records, Clark was updating receiving records. The 6'1", 176 lb. junior set school season records for receptions (95) and yards receiving (1,213) for 11 TDs, which is tied for third in a season. He led the PSAC and ranked third in Division II in receptions per game (8.6), along with second in the conference and seventh in Division II in receiving yards, and second and ninth, respectively, in receiving yards per game (110.3 ypg.). He was third in the conference and 20th nationally in receiving touchdowns.
 
Clark caught 8-or-more passes in eight games, and set single-game record for receptions (17), yards receiving (289), and receiving TDs (3) at Seton Hill. He also caught three touchdowns against West Chester among his 12 receptions, and had 10 catches for 158 yards vs. Lock Haven. Clark had six 100-yard games.
 
Clark will enter his final season ranked second in career receptions at Edinboro with 168, needing 27 to break the career record. He is also third in career receiving yards (2,332) and tied for second in career receiving TDs (22).
