The Game Story
  • The going certainly doesn't get any easier as Edinboro heads back out on the road after a one-game reprieve. The Fighting Scots finished up a three-game road trip and then returned home on Wednesday to host Gannon. Now they hit the highway once again for two more contests, beginning with a contest at fifth-ranked Indiana(Pa.).
  • The IUP game was originally scheduled for Saturday, January 19, but was rescheduled due to an impending winter storm scheduled to hit the area over the weekend.
  • Edinboro suffered its sixth straight loss against Gannon, as the undermanned Fighting Scots led by nine at the half before falling by nine, 87-79. That leaves them with a 4-10 overall record and 1-8 in the PSAC West. IUP, the preseason favorite in the PSAC West, has a 15-1 record after a 98-97 overtime win at East Stroudsburg on Wednesday. The Crimson Hawks are 8-1 in PSAC action, and are 10-0 at home at the Kovalchick Complex. IUP is ranked fifth in the latest NABC Division II Top 25.
  • This marks the first meeting between the two teams since Edinboro upset IUP in the PSAC Quarterfinals last year. The Crimson Hawks won the two regular season meetings – 70-67 at Edinboro and 77-69 at IUP – and came in as the number one seed in the Western Division. Edinboro, the fourth seed, came away with a 79-63 victory against a depleted IUP squad to advance to the semifinals.
  • Edinboro suffered large graduation losses, and has been forced to play without second team All-PSAC West performer Anthony Coleman the last ten games due to an injury. The Fighting Scots have also been without second-leading scorer DeAnthony Owens the last four games, and Steven Freeman, who has been filling in at guard, sat out the Gannon game with an injury.
  • Edinboro comes in averaging 72.6 ppg. while allowing 81.4 ppg., good for 14th in the PSAC in both categories. IUP is sixth in the PSAC in both scoring offense (81.6 ppg.) and scoring defense (69.9 ppg.).
  • Head coach Pat Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year after leading Edinboro to an 18-11 record a year ago. It marked the finest year of his five-year reign after Edinboro had been picked to finish eighth in the Western Division. The Fighting Scots would finish 13-9 in PSAC action, good for fourth place. They went on to defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round, followed by an upset of top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) in the quarterfinals. Edinboro would lose to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals.
  • With three starters departing who combined for a total of 1,348 points, Edinboro was picked to finish seventh in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll. IUP returned three starters and four other letterwinners, and was chosen the preseason favorite in the PSAC West after going 22-8 a year ago.

  • Cleary vs. IUP: 2-9
Last Meeting
February 28, 2018 – Edinboro 79, IUP 63 at Indiana, Pa. BOX | RECAP
  • Fourth-seeded Edinboro upset top-seed Indiana(Pa.) at the Kovalchick Complex, 79-63, to advance to the PSAC Final Four for the first time since 2008. The Crimson Hawks had dominated the series of late, winning the previous six meetings.
  • Edinboro gained control early in the contest against an IUP team that was forced to play without Anthony Glover (suspension) and Dante Lombardi (injury). The lead exchanged hands three times in the first three minutes before Anthony Coleman's 3-pointer gave the Fighting Scots the lead for good at 8-5.
  • That started a 17-5 run for the Fighting Scots as they went up 20-10 with 11 minutes remaining in the half. Jaymon Mason and Keshawn Liggins led the way with five points apiece. IUP would hit a pair of 3-pointers to make it 20-16 with ten minutes remaining.
  • Edinboro gradually rebuilt the lead, and Mason's three gave the Scots a 35-24 advantage with 2:53 left. Coleman capped the first half with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer for a 40-27 lead at the half. The Fighting Scots made 8-of-19 3-pointers over the first 20 minutes and had a 12-1 advantage in second half points. They forced the Crimson Hawks into 10 turnovers.
  • The Fighting Scots never gave IUP an opportunity to cut into the lead much in the second half. A tip-in by Blake Danielak with 17:08 remaining made it 42-34, but Edinboro ran off the next nine points on 3-pointers by Coleman, Liggins, and Mike Beck, to grab the biggest lead of the night at 51-34.
  • IUP would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way, the last time at 69-58 with 4:35 remaining, but over the next minute-and-a-half, Mason drained six straight free throws.
  • Mason led all scorers with 24 points, giving him 1,999 for his career. Edinboro's all-time leading scorer made 7-of-17 field goals, including 4-of-10 3-pointers, and was 6-of-6 at the line. He added six assists without a turnover.
  • Liggins, the PSAC's leading scorer, added 22 points on 8-of-14 field goals, 4-of-7 3-pointers, and 2-of-2 free throws. Coleman made 6-of-9 field goals, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc to finish with 15 points, as Edinboro's Big Three accounted for 61 points. Coleman led Edinboro with nine rebounds.
  • IUP had four players in double figures, led by Jacobo Diaz and Willem Brandwijk with 16 points apiece. Diaz led the Crimson Hawks with nine rebounds, while Brandwijk added six. Malik Miller added 14 points and Danielak 11.
  • Edinboro shot 49.1 percent from the field (28-of-57), including 13-of-29 3-pointers. The Fighting Scots were a perfect 10-for-10 from the line. IUP shot 46.3 percent (25-of-54), going 7-of-22 on 3-pointers, and went 6-of-10 at the line.
  • The Fighting Scots held a slight 30-29 rebounding advantage, and committed 12 turnovers compared to 15 for the Crimson Hawks.
Head Coach Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 69-79, 6th Year
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. Two years ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February.
  • The 2017-18 Fighting Scots were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They would surprise the league with a fourth place finish at 13-9 in league play, and 18-11 overall. Edinboro would defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament, then hand top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) a defeat in the quarterfinals. The playoff run came to an end with a loss to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals. It marked Edinboro's first appearance in the PSAC Final Four since 2008.
  • Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year. The 18 wins were the most by the Fighting Scots since the 2012-13 team won 18 games.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • A depleted Edinboro squad looks to snap a six-game losing streak while playing at the fifth-ranked team in Division II. The Fighting Scots have been battling the odds much of the year, particularly since All-PSAC West guard Anthony Coleman went down with an injury early in the season. Head coach Pat Cleary has had to force-feed a youthful squad. His Fighting Scots have been highly competitive, but unfortunately, that has not translated into a win of late. On Wednesday, Edinboro held a nine-point halftime lead over Gannon before the Golden Knights rallied to win 87-79. That left the Fighting Scots with a 4-10 overall record and 1-8 in the PSAC West. They were picked to finish seventh in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason after finishing fourth in the division with an 18-11 record a year ago.
  • The Fighting Scots have now played ten games without Anthony Coleman, and the last four without second-leading scorer DeAnthony Owens (13.1 ppg.). Starting forward Daylon Harris returned against Gannon after attending a family funeral over the weekend and missing the Pitt-Johnstown game. Steven Freeman, however, suffered an injury in practice and was unable to play against Gannon after starting the previous three games at guard.
  • A second team All-PSAC West selection a year ago in his first season at Edinboro, Coleman averaged 15.2 ppg. and was one of the top 3-point threats in the PSAC. He scored in double digits in the first three games, and was well on his way to a fourth at Charleston. The 6'3" senior scored Edinboro's first seven points, but he would go out with an injury and not return. Coleman has not played since and is expected to miss an extended period with the injury.
  • After being held to eight points at Kutztown, Jaryn Simpson exploded for 33 points at Pitt-Johnstown, and followed that up with a 24-point effort against Gannon. In fact, the sophomore guard posted his second straight double double as he handed out a career-high 11 assists vs. Gannon. He has emerged as Edinboro's leading scorer at 18.6 ppg., good for fifth in the PSAC, after averaging 3.4 ppg. as a freshman. He has scored in double figures in 12 of 14 games, with seven games of 20-or-more points. Against Gannon, he made 8-of-21 field goals, including 6-of-13 3-pointers. Simpson scored a career-high 34 points at Bloomsburg earlier this season. He leads the team with 64 assists, has made a team-high 42 3-pointers in 116 attempts, and is even averaging 5.3 rpg. Simpson ranks second in the PSAC in free throw percentage at 90.0 percent (63-of-70) and is tied for third in 3-pointers made per game (3.0).
  • Trey Staunch continues to provide Edinboro plenty of muscle inside. The 6'4", 280 lb. offensive tackle-turned-forward has scored in double figures in 12 of his 13 games. He boosted his averages to 13.4 ppg. and 5.9 rpg. after posting his second career double double against Gannon. Staunch totaled 20 points and 10 rebounds. He is shooting 56.2 percent from the floor (3rd in the PSAC). Staunch was a second team All-PSAC West as an offensive tackle this year. He had not played basketball since high school before joining the team last season.
  • Turner Kurt, a 6'8" freshman, has started the last four games. During that period, he is averaging 13.3 ppg. On the year, he is up to 8.3 ppg. after dropping in 15 points against Gannon. He had a season-high 18 points at UPJ. He adds 4.8 rpg. and has made 19-of-51 3-pointers
  • Heading into Wednesday's game, Kameron King had played a total of 38 minutes and scored three points. The 6'4" freshman played 27 minutes vs. Gannon, providing a huge lift with five points, three rebounds, and six assists.
Scouting the Crimson Hawks
  • Indiana(Pa.) owns a 15-1 record and is 8-1 in the PSAC West. The Crimson Hawks were ranked fifth in the latest NABC Division II top 25, dropping down from third after a 74-69 loss at Slippery Rock a week ago. That snapped a 14-game winning streak. IUP narrowly averted a second straight loss, posting a 98-97 win in overtime at East Stroudsburg on Wednesday. Willem Brandwik's tied the game at the buzzer and IUP never trailed in overtime. The Crimson Hawks are a perfect 10-0 at the Kovalchick Complex this season.
  • Head coach Joe Lombardi, a former assistant at Pittsburgh, enters his 13th season with the Crimson Hawks and has a 290-98 overall record with eight NCAA tournament appearances, eight regular season division titles, three PSAC Tournament championships (2010, 2011, 2013), two Atlantic Region Championships (2010, 2015), and two Division II national title game appearances (2010, 2015). Lombardi began the season ranked 12th in PSAC history and third among active coaches in victories. He is in search of his 11th straight 20-win season.
  • Senior guard Dante Lombardi scored a career-high 33 points and tied a program record for 3-pointers in a game with eight to lead IUP to the overtime victory at East Stroudsburg. The son of head coach Joe Lombardi made 8-of-15 3-pointers. He comes in averaging 16.1 ppg., leading the team in assists (85) and steals (37). He ranks second in the PSAC in assists per game (5.3), tied for third in 3-pointers per game (3.0), and tied for fourth in steals per game (23).Lombardi is a three-time All-PSAC West honoree.
  • Lombardi is part of trio of double-figure scorers who combine for over 53 ppg. Jacobo Diaz, a 6'9" senior, ranks third in the PSAC in scoring at 20.4 ppg. The 2017 PSAC West Athlete of the Year is also fourth in the conference in rebounding (9.1 rpg.) and sixth in field goal percentage (52.9 pct.). Diaz is a two-time All-PSAC West first team selection who earned All-American honors as a sophomore. With 28 points and 13 rebounds at East Stroudsburg, he now ranks 11th in career scoring (1,479 points) and second in career rebounds (949). He leads the PSAC with nine double doubles.
  • Malik Miller adds 17.0 ppg. A 6'4" junior, Miller contributes 4.4 rpg. and stands second on the team with 54 assists.
  • Forward Willem Brandwijk, a 6'8" senior, falls just under double digits at 9.8 ppg. He is second on the team in rebounding (6.9 rpg.).
  • Former Meadville High School standout Armoni Foster has started three games and is averaging 8.2 ppg. He is a 6'4" redshirt freshman.
Next for the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro will wrap up a string of five games on the road in six games, playing at Clarion on Wednesday, January 23. The contest is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
