The Game Story
  • Playing the middle game of a three-game road swing, Edinboro looks to snap a three-game losing streak while playing its final PSAC crossover game of the season. The Fighting Scots play at Kutztown, one of the top teams in the Eastern Division over the years. Edinboro comes in with a 4-7 overall record and is 1-5 in the PSAC West following Saturday's 77-73 loss at Seton Hill. Kutztown improved to 9-6 overall and 3-4 in league play with an 80-69 win at Bloomsburg on Saturday.
  • Edinboro suffered large graduation losses, and has been forced to play without second team All-PSAC West performer Anthony Coleman the last seven games. Coleman is out with an injury. The Fighting Scots were also without second-leading scorer DeAnthony Owens in the loss at Seton Hill.
  • Edinboro comes in averaging 72.8 ppg., good for 13th in the PSAC. The Fighting Scots allow 78.7 ppg., which ranks 12th. Kutztown ranks second in the PSAC in scoring at 83.6 ppg. The Golden Bears are 15th in the PSAC in scoring defense (81.3 ppg.). The Fighting Scots will have to try and slow down Anthony Lee, who leads the PSAC and ranks second in Division II in scoring at 27.1 ppg. The 6'2" guard has already had games of 50 and 41 points this season. He ranks third in career scoring at Kutztown with 1,877 points.
  • Head coach Pat Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year after leading Edinboro to an 18-11 record a year ago. It marked the finest year of his five-year reign after Edinboro had been picked to finish eighth in the Western Division. The Fighting Scots would finish 13-9 in PSAC action, good for fourth place. They went on to defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round, followed by an upset of top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) in the quarterfinals. Edinboro would lose to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals.
  • With three starters departing who combined for a total of 1,348 points, Edinboro was picked to finish seventh in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll. Kutztown comes off a 26-4 record in 2017-18, earning a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Golden Bears were picked fourth in the Eastern Division preseason poll.

  • After rallying from an 11-point deficit midway through the second half, Edinboro saw Kutztown's Ethan Ridgeway knock down the game winning basket with 0.8 seconds remaining as the Golden Bears snapped Edinboro's five-game winning streak, 91-89, at McComb Fieldhouse.
  • Two of the top teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference slugged it out for 40 minutes, with Edinboro ultimately falling to 9-3 overall, while Kutztown improved to 10-2.
  • The contest featured 12 ties and 12 lead changes. Neither team led by more than six points in the first 30 minutes. The Golden Bears broke a 57-57 tie with an 18-7 run to go on top 75-64 with 9:02 left in the game. The Fighting Scots answered with the next 11 points to knot the game at 75-75 with 5:15 to play.
  • Jaymon Mason started the run with a 3-pointer, followed by a Jaryn Simpson layup. Mason's jumper in the paint pulled the Scots to within 75-71. After a Kutztown miss, Keshawn Liggins scored off an offensive rebound, and another Kutztown miss led to a pair of Mason free throws and a 75-all tie.
  • After that, the game featured three ties and four lead changes. With Kutztown leading 80-78 with 3:14 to play, Edinboro took its first lead since early in the second half on a pair of Liggins' jumpers. He was fouled on the second and converted on the 3-point play for an 83-80 lead with 1:50 to play.
  • The lead lasted just five seconds as Max Wagner's 3-point play knotted the game at 83-83. Another Liggins jumper game Edinboro an 85-83 advantage before Ridgeway's drive and free throw made it 86-85 with 1:13 left.
  • Anthony Coleman gave the lead back to the Scots on a baseline drive at 87-86 with 48 seconds remaining. Four seconds later, Ridgeway beat the Scots down the court for a layup and an 88-87 lead. Following a Boro miss, Ridgeway made one-of-two free throws.
  • Mason came down and tied the score at 89-89 with 15 seconds to play on a 12-foot jumper in the paint. Following a KU timeout, Ridgeway hit a long jumper from the right wing just inside the 3-point arc for the game-winning basket with 0.8 remaining.
  • Mason recorded his 15th career 30-point game, finishing with 33 points. He made 8-of-14 field goals, including 4-of-8 3-pointers, and was 13-of-15 at the line. He added five rebounds and four assists.
  • After a slow start, Liggins, the PSAC's leading scorer, ended with 26 points and 11 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season. He added seven assists while making 10-of-22 field goals and 6-of-6 free throws. Coleman was also in double figures with 16 points, despite battling foul trouble. He scored 12 of Edinboro's first 17 points. The junior guard made 4-of-6 3-pointers.
  • Kutztown featured four players in double figures, led by Anthony Lee's 25 points. The junior guard came in as the second-leading scorer in the PSAC. He was held to three points by Mike Beck in the first half, but would explode for 22 markers in the second half.
  • Ridgeway finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds. The senior guard topped 1,000 career points in the first half. Dan Cuevas had 17 points and Max Wagner 11.
  • Edinboro shot 45.9 percent from the floor (28-of-61), including 10-of-22 on 3-pointers. Kutztown shot 55.7 percent from the floor (34-of-61), and made 5-of-13 3-pointers. Edinboro was 23-of-26 from the line and KU 18-of-25.
Head Coach Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 69-76, 6th Year
  • Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013 after head coach Greg Walcavich announced his retirement. Cleary served as Walcavich's assistant coach for 14 years.
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year since his appointment, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark. Two years ago the Fighting Scots came in at 8-18 overall and 6-16 in the PSAC West, with injuries forcing the Fighting Scots to suit up as few as seven players in February.
  • The 2017-18 Fighting Scots were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They would surprise the league with a fourth place finish at 13-9 in league play, and 18-11 overall. Edinboro would defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament, then hand top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) a defeat in the quarterfinals. The playoff run came to an end with a loss to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals. It marked Edinboro's first appearance in the PSAC Final Four since 2008.
  • Cleary was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year. The 18 wins were the most by the Fighting Scots since the 2012-13 team won 18 games.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll. His first Boro squad finished 10-16 in 2013-14.
Scouting the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro looks to snap a three-game losing streak after suffering a narrow 77-73 loss at Seton Hill on Saturday. That left the Fighting Scots with a 4-7 overall record and 1-5 in the PSAC West. The Fighting Scots were picked to finish seventh in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason after finishing fourth in the division with an 18-11 record a year ago.
  • The Fighting Scots have played the last seven games without Anthony Coleman. A second team All-PSAC West selection a year ago in his first season at Edinboro, Coleman averaged 15.2 ppg. and was one of the top 3-point threats in the PSAC. He scored in double digits in the first three games, and was well on his way to a fourth at Charleston. The 6'3" senior scored Edinboro's first seven points, but he would go out with an injury and not return. Coleman has not played since and is expected to miss an extended period with the injury. The Fighting Scots were also without second-leading scorer DeAnthony Owens (13.1 ppg.) on Saturday due to an injury.
  • Jaryn Simpson has emerged as Edinboro's leading scorer at 17.8 ppg., good for 11th in the PSAC, after averaging 3.4 ppg. as a freshman. The sophomore guard has scored in double figures in 10 of 11 games, with five games of 20-or-more points. He comes off another big effort at Seton Hill after scoring 26 points, making 4-of-9 3-pointers and 8-of-11 free throws. Simpson scored a career-best 34-points at Bloomsburg, making 10-of-18 field goals, including 5-of-9 3-pointers, and 9-of-10 free throws. He also leads the team with 45 assists, has made a team-high 30 3-pointers in 83 attempts, and is even averaging 4.7 rpg. Simpson ranks second in the PSAC in free throw percentage at 88.9 percent (48-of-54).
  • Trey Staunch joined the Fighting Scots in game number two after wrapping up his football career the same day Edinboro was opening the basketball season. The 6'4", 280 lb. senior was named a second team All-PSAC West selection at offensive tackle. While coming off the bench, he provides the Fighting Scots with plenty of inside muscle. Staunch has scored in double figures in eight of his ten games, and comes in at 12.8 ppg. He adds 5.2 rpg. and is shooting 60.6 percent from the floor (52-of-86), second in the PSAC, bolstered by a 10-for-10 showing against Mansfield. Staunch had not played basketball since high school before joining the team last season.
  • Freshman Turner Kurt made his first career start at Seton Hill. The 6'8" forward proceeded to score 13 points and pull down six rebounds. He is averaging 7.1 ppg. and 5.1 rpg.
  • Simpson is one of two sophomores playing a huge role. Alex Jay has replaced Coleman in the starting lineup, and while not providing a great deal of scoring (5.5 ppg.), the 6'3" guard set a career-high for rebounds in each of his first three starts and has led the team in rebounding in five of the seven games he has started. He is averaging a team-high 6.6 rpg.
  • Daylon Harris dropped in 23 points while making 10-of-18 field goals and 3-of-3 3-pointers against California(Pa.) last Wednesday. The junior from Western Nebraska CC boosted his average to 7.6 ppg.
Scouting the Golden Bears
  • Seton Hill comes into the contest with a 2-9 overall record and is 0-5 in the PSAC West. The Griffins lost their third straight game on Wednesday, a 71-67 loss in overtime at Slippery Rock. Two of those three setbacks have come in overtime.
  • Head coach Bernie Driscoll is in his 19th season at Kutztown, and not only holds the school record for wins, but has climbed to eighth all-time among PSAC men's basketball coaches. He owns a career record of 316-210. A year ago, he led the Golden Bears to a 26-4 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. He is a four-time PSAC East Coach of the Year (2003, 2009, 2015, 2016) and has led KU to six PSAC East titles (2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2017), including six of the last 11 years. Kutztown has reached the PSAC Championship Game four times and has made four NCAA Tournament appearances during his reign. Driscoll has led the Golden Bears to a winning season in 14 of the last 16 seasons, and an appearance in the PSAC Tournament in 15 of the last 16.
  • Kutztown likes an up-tempo game, averaging 83.6 ppg., good for second in the PSAC. The Golden Bears feature three players in double figures, led by one of the most prolific scorers in the country in Lee. The 6'2" redshirt senior comes in at 27.1 ppg., good for the top spot in the PSAC and second in Division II. Earlier this season he set a school record with 50 points against Pitt-Johnstown, and also has a 41-point effort to his credit. Lee has made 47 of 111 3-pointers, ranking third in the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game. He has made 100-of-110 free throws to lead the PSAC in free throw percentage at 90.9 percent.  He ranks third in career scoring at Kutztown with 1,877 points, climbing into 23rd all-time in the PSAC. He set the school record for 3-pointers made on Saturday with his 230th. Lee is a three-time All-PSAC East performer, earning first team honors last year and second team accolades the previous two years.
  • Moe Williams, a 6'7" redshirt sophomore, was the 2018 PSAC East Freshman of the Year after averaging 10.9 ppg. and 8.7 rpg. He is averaging close to a double double in his second season at 12.6 ppg. and 9.4 rpg. The latter figure is third in the PSAC. Williams is also third in field goal percentage at 59.4 percent (79-of-133).
Next for the Fighting Scots
  • Edinboro concludes a three-game road trip on Saturday, January 12 at Pitt-Johnstown. The Fighting Scots' final 14 games will be against PSAC West teams. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
