MATCH STORYLINES
  • A pair of streaking teams sitting atop the Western Division standings meet, as Slippery Rock owns a six-game winning streak and Edinboro is 4-0-1 in its last five contests. The Fighting Scots come off a 2-2 tie in double overtime vs. Gannon on Saturday. SRU, meanwhile, defeated Cal U 4-0 that same day.
  • The tie vs. Gannon saw a four-game winning streak come to an end. That is the longest winning streak since 2016, when the Fighting Scots opened the season with five straight wins.
  • The Fighting Scots come in with a 4-2-1 record overall and are now 4-0-1 in the PSAC West. The Gannon tie saw both teams score twice in the first half, then battle without a goal for the next 65 minutes. Brittany Hurey scored her first goal of the season for Edinboro's first goal, and Leah Czechowski, a transfer from Genesee Community College, had her first goal as a Fighting Scot.
  • Gannon snapped a two-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over Cal U on Wednesday. That victory evened the Lady Knights at 3-3-0 overall and boosted their PSAC West ledger to 2-3-0.
  • The Fighting Scots were picked to finish sixth in the PSAC West, while Slippery Rock has so far lived up to expectations after being selected the preseason favorite. With the new divisional format, the teams will meet twice this year.
  • Eight different players have scored goals for Edinboro, with Jessica Frank  and Brittnie Spithaler leading the way with three apiece. Spithaler is the team's leading scorer, adding four assists for 10 points. Rebecca Manns, and Sidney Dobbins have two apiece. Danielle Chatten has moved into 13th place in career scoring with 50 points. Sophomore Anna Voelker has been in goal for every minute and has a 1.52 GAA.
  • Slippery Rock has recorded three shutouts and allowed just five goals in seven matches. Emma Yoder has a 0.62 GAA. Rachel Edge paces SRU with 6 goals and 5 assists for 17 points, while Kayla Swope has 11 points (3 goals, 5 assists).
  • Edinboro posted a 6-11-0 finish a year ago while fielding a young squad. Head coach Gary Kagiavas welcomes back nine starters for his 24th season as head coach.  Kagiavas has a 222-180-38 record, all as Edinboro's only head coach. The Fighting Scots have qualified for the PSAC Playoffs 11 times, with seven of those in the last nine years. Entering the season, Kagiavas ranked 24th among active Division II coaches in victories. In addition, he ranks second in wins among PSAC women's soccer coaches, exceeded only by West Chester's Betsy Anne Kempf-Townsley with 332 wins.  He has been selected the PSAC Coach of the Year three times (2001, '05, '07).
  • Slippery Rock has dominated the all-time series at 20-4-8. Edinboro last won in 2016, then tied 2-2 in 2017, while The Rock won a 1-0 decision a year ago. Of the last nine meetings, four have finished 1-0 and two were 1-1 ties.
UP NEXT
  • Edinboro concludes a stretch of four straight home contests, hosting Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday, October 5. The match gets underway at 1 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium.
