AROUND THE LEAGUE
SERIES HISTORY
  • All-Time Series: Edinboro leads 17-11-2
  • Last Meeting: September 18, 2019: Edinboro 4, Cal U 0
  • How It Happened: Rebecca Manns scored a pair of goals and Edinboro scored three goals late to pull away for a 4-0 win at Cal U. It marked the fifth straight win for the Fighting Scots over Cal. Edinboro opened the scoring almost immediately, finding the back of the net at 2:02. Rebecca Manns scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Brittnie Spithaler. That would be the lone scoring in the first half. Edinboro would add three goals in the final 14 minutes to pull away. Manns scored her second goal on a header off a free kick, assisted by Cameron Bujnoski, to make it 2-0 at 76:28. Less than four minutes later, at 80:22, Sidney Dobbins scored her second goal of the season, assisted by Danielle Chatten, for a 3-0 lead. The margin grew to 4-0 at the 89:14 mark on Audrey Taylor's first career. The freshman took a pass in the box from Chatten and beat the goalkeeper. • Edinboro played its fifth overtime match in the last six contests on Wednesday, coming away with a 3-2 win in two overtimes at Indiana(Pa.). The Fighting Scots have won three matches and tied two during that stretch. In fact, Edinboro is riding the finest stretch in school history, going 8-0-2 in the last ten matches. That also coincides with the start of the PSAC season.
  • Picked to finish sixth in the PSAC West in the coaches' preseason poll, Edinboro is currently in second place in the Western Division with 26 points, just one point behind Slippery Rock. Cal U is in eighth place with 6 points. Edinboro is ranked sixth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Atlantic Region rankings.
  • The Edinboro-IUP and Mercyhurst battled to a scoreless tie in two overtimes on Friday night. That left the Fighting Scots with a 7-2-2 overall record, along with 7-0-2 in the PSAC West. That is the second-best streak for nine matches in school history. The 2001 Edinboro edition went 8-0-1 in nine matches.  They have already eclipsed last year's win total, when Edinboro finished at 6-11-0.
  • Cal U has a 3-8-0 overall record and is 2-8-0 in the PSAC West. The Vulcans have lost their last three matches, including a 2-1 setback to Clarion on Wednesday, and have dropped seven of their last eight contests. The lone victory in that stretch was a 2-1 win over Seton Hill.
  • Edinboro was ranked sixth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Atlantic Region rankings.
  • Ten different players have scored goals for Edinboro after Ashley Bayer scored her first career goal and contributed an assist.  Brittnie Spithaler leads the team with 5 goals and 5 assists for 15 points. Danielle Chatten adds 4 goals and 5 assists for 13 points.  Chatten has moved into 11th place in career goals with 21 goals, along with ranking 12th in career points (57) and tied for sixth in career assists (15). Rebecca Manns has 3 goals and 3 assists, and is now 13th in career assists with 14.
  • Sophomore Anna Voelker has been in goal for every minute and has a 1.09 GAA with 4 shutouts. She is seventh in the PSAC in goals against average. She was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week after posting a pair of shutouts last week. She saw a streak of 371-plus minutes without allowing a goal come to an end at IUP.
  • Edinboro posted a 6-11-0 finish a year ago while fielding a young squad. Head coach Gary Kagiavas welcomes back nine starters for his 24th season as head coach.  Kagiavas has a 226-180-39 record, all as Edinboro's only head coach. The Fighting Scots have qualified for the PSAC Playoffs 11 times, with seven of those in the last nine years. Entering the season, Kagiavas ranked 24th among active Division II coaches in victories. In addition, he ranks second in wins among PSAC women's soccer coaches, exceeded only by West Chester's Betsy Anne Kempf-Townsley with 332 wins.  He has been selected the PSAC Coach of the Year three times (2001, '05, '07).
