Jackson Now 11 Kills Shy of 1,000 as Edinboro Falls in Four Sets at Shepherd

  • The Short Story: Edinboro opened an arduous two-day swing to the top two teams in the PSAC Southeast Division with a loss in four games at Shepherd. The Rams, playing for the third time in three days, completed the sweep of the three northwest Pennsylvania teams. Shepherd won the first two sets by scores of 25-14 and 25-20 before Edinboro claimed a 25-19 win in the third set. The Rams would close out the match with a 25-17 win in the fourth set. Cierah Jackson finished with 14 kills, boosting her career total to 989. She needs 11 kills in Sunday's match at Shippensburg to become the 13th Fighting Scot with 1,000 kills.    
HOW IT HAPPENED   
  • While Shepherd hit .400 in the first set, the Fighting Scots could not get their attack going, hitting -.032. It added up to a 25-14 win for the Rams, despite five kills by Jackson.
  • Edinboro actually outhit Shepherd in the second set, .189 to .179, but would fall 25-20. The game was tight for the first half, with a Sally Sterkel kill tying the match at 12-12. But the Rams ran off the next five points and edinboro mwould get no closer the four points the rest of the way.
  • Set number three went to Edinboro by a 25-19 score as Bella Burrelli contributed five kills and Jackson three. The Fighting Scots enjoyed their best-hitting set at .286, while Shepherd came in at .167.  Edinboro grabbed the lead for good at 9-8 on a kills by Sterkel, starting a run of five straight points for Edinboro that included a pair of kills by Burrelli.
  • Shepherd would take the lead for good in the fourth set at 8-7, part of a 4-0 run that saw the Rams go up 11-7. Edinboro closed to 12-10 on a Burrelli service ace, but the Rams used a 5-2 spurt to take control. Sterkel had four kills in the fourth set. 
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING   
  • Cierah Jackson moved to within 11 kills of 1,000 after leading the Fighting Scots with 14 kills. The junior outside hitter has moved into eighth in career kills and has reached double figures in kills in 18 of 19 matches. She has led Edinboro in kills 14 times.       
  • Freshman Bella Burrelli continued to provide Edinboro with a solid one-two punch, finishing with 13 kills, adding 9 digs and a pair of service aces. She has reached double figures in kills 12 times.
  • Sally Sterkel ended the day with 9 kills and a .280 hitting percentage. The sophomore also had a block solo and 3 block assists.
  • Alicia Eldredge had 32 assists along with 7 digs. She has 1,556 career assists. Molly Breier led Edinboro with 16 digs, while Jessica Giannoccaro added 11 digs, along with 2 service aces.  Breier now has 850 career digs.
UP NEXT   
  • The going doesn't get much easier for Edinboro. The Fighting Scots play at Shippensburg on Sunday, October 20. The match starts at 1 p.m.
  • The Raiders have a 16-4 overall record and are 8-1 in the PSAC Southeast. They suffered their lone loss on Friday night, falling to Gannon 3-0, but came back for a 3-0 win over Mercyhurst on Saturday.
  • Earlier in the week, Shippensburg handed Shepherd its lone loss of the season in five games.
