Fighting Scots Complete Weekend Sweep with 3-0 Win over Slippery Rock

  • The Short Story: Edinboro completed the sweep of Northwest Division foes Clarion and Slippery Rock with a 3-0 win over The Rock on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Scots won by scores of 25-12, 25-15, and 25-17 and trailed just three times the entire match. They enjoyed another hot-hitting performance, ending the day at .349 compared to .086 for SRU, and took advantage of several big runs for the second straight day. One night after reaching 1,000 career kills, Cierah Jackson led Edinboro with 9 kills as five different players had 6-or-more kills. She hit .471 and now has 1,019 career kills. Bella Burrelli added 8 kills and 12 digs, with Sally Sterkel also totaling 8 kills. 
HOW IT HAPPENED   
  • With 16 kills and just one error, Edinboro hit .556 for the first set while winning 25-12. The Fighting Scots broke a 1-1 tie on a kill by Bella Burrelli. Leading 10-6, they would run off an incredible 10 straight points to go up 20-6. The tandem of middle hitters, Sally Sterkel (3) and Erica Sharp (2) combined for five kills in the run. Sharp finished with 5 kills and Jackson 4 in the set.
  • Slippery Rock would score the first point of the match to start the second set for its first lead of the day. Edinboro grabbed the lead for good at 3-2 on an SRU attack error, but still held just a 9-8 lead. The lead would grow to 15-11 on a 6-3 run, and closed out the match with the final six points, two of those coming on service aces by Alicia Eldredge. The sophomore setter had 5 service aces in the second set, a 25-15 win for Edinboro.
  • SRU again took a 1-0 lead to start the third set, but a Cierah Jackson kill gave Edinboro the lead for good at 3-2. She would end with 5 kills in the set as Edinboro prevailed 25-17. SRU would close to 18-16, but Edinboro closed out the match on a 7-1 run, with a pair of kills by Sterkel.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING   
  • Cierah Jackson boosted her career kill total to 1,019 with a team-leading 9 kills. It did mark just the third time in 22 matches that she has not reached double figures in kill, but the junior outside hitter has now led Edinboro in kills 17 times. She hit .471 on the afternoon.
  • Bella Burrelli continued her impressive freshman campaign with 8 kills and a team-high 12 digs. Sophomore Sally Sterkel added 8 kills and a .444 hitting percentage.      
  • Molly Breier had 11 digs, bringing her career total to 894. The junior libero now ranks 18th all-time. She also had 3 service aces. 
  • Alicia Eldredge totaled 31 assists along with 6 digs and 5 service aces. She now has 1,621 career assists, which is tenth all-time.
  • Erica Sharp contributed 4 block assists along with 6 kills.
  • Edinboro hit .349 as a team and also had 11 service aces compared to 2 for Slippery Rock. The Fighting Scots also dominated at the net with a block solo and 10 block assists compared to 2 block assists for SRU.
UP NEXT   
  • Edinboro has a big week ahead as the Fighting Scots continue their push for a PSAC playoff berth. They will play three times this coming week, beginning with a match at local rival Mercyhurst on Tuesday, October 29. That's followed by a weekend set with Seton Hill at home on Friday, November 1, followed by another home match vs. Cal U on Saturday, November 2.
