HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In what would be the theme for the night, Edinboro came away with a 25-23 win in a tight first set. The set featured nine ties and three lead changes, but Edinboro hit .382 and had five players with two-or-more kills, including the freshmen tandem of Bella Burrelli and Erica Sharpe with five apiece. Edinboro trailed 19-15 before running off five straight points, all on kills, for a 20-19 lead. Back came the Lakers with four of the next five points for a 23-21 lead. The Fighting Scots would score the final four points to rally for the win. The winning point came on a kill by Alicia Eldredge.
  • Another tight set saw seven ties but just one lead change. The Lakers grabbed the lead for good with a 6-1 run to turn an 11-9 deficit into a 15-12 lead. The Lakers would close out the 25-19 win with six of the last eight points. Edinboro didn't help itself with six service errors, and the Lakers turned in a strong defensive effort with 23 digs.
  • Edinboro grabbed a 2-1 lead with a 25-22 win in the third set. This time the two teams played through 10 ties and four lead changes. Edinboro's front line came up big with a block solo and six block assists while Erica Sharp and Sally Sterkel combined for seven kills. The match was tied at 22-22 when Edinboro closed it out with three straight points.
  • In the most frustrating set of the night for the Fighting Scots, Edinboro jumped out to seven-point lead at 13-6, and still led 20-15. Mercyhurst ran off seven straight points to stun the Scots and take a 22-20 lead. Edinboro would knot the score at 24-24 on a blocking error, but the Lakers ran off the next two points for a 26-24 win, sending the match to a fifth set.
  • In an eerily similar circumstance as the fourth set, Edinboro dominated play early, taking a 9-5 lead, before the Lakers came roaring back to take a 12-11 advantage, scoring five of six points. The Lakers would not score again. An Eldredge kill tied the match at 12, and a pair of blocks put the Scots at match point. Cierah Jackson ended the match with a kill for the 15-12 win.
