Burrelli Paces Boro to Three-Set Win over Cal U

  • The Short Story: What a difference a day makes! Less than 24 hours after losing in three sets to Seton Hill, Edinboro came back to hand Cal U a 3-0 defeat, winning by scores of 25-18, 25-23, and 25-23. After dominating the action in the first set, the Fighting Scots came back from 21-20 deficits in the final two sets to win. The victory maintains Edinboro's hopes for a PSAC Tournament berth. Head coach Missy Soboleski's team has four matches remaining, three on the road. Freshman Bella Burrelli paced the Boro with 15 kills, while Sally Sterkel, Cierah Jackson, and Alicia Eldredge had 7 kills apiece. Eldredge added 30 assists and 8 digs.             
HOW IT HAPPENED   
  • Edinboro took control of the first set early on, breaking a 7-7 tie and building an 18-12 lead. The Fighting Scots hit a sizzling .538 in the set, with Burrelli contributing 6 kills.
  • The second set was a different story, as the two teams combined for 10 ties and five lead changes. Cal would grab an 18-5 lead, but a 5-1 run by Edinboro gave the Scots a 20-19 edge on Alicia Eldred's kill. The Vulcans scored the next two points to grab their final lead at 21-20. Edinboro responded with kills by Burrelli and Sally Sterkel and went up 23-21 and the teams split the final four points.
  • Edinboro maintained the lead for much of the third set, holding a 19-14 lead. That's when Cal went on a run of six straight points to pull ahead 20-19. The Fighting Scots answered with a kill by Cierah Jackson, and the teams were then tied at 21, 22, and 23. Edinboro scored the last two points on kills bby Eldredge and Jackson to wrap up the win.   
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING   
  • Freshman Bella Burrelli enjoyed one of the top nights of a strong freshman season with 15 kills and a .424 hitting percentage. She added 6 digs.    
  • While Burrelli was the only player in double figures, Sally Sterkel, Cierah Jackson, and Alicia Eldredge had 7 kills apiece. Jackson boosted her career total to 1,043 kills. Eldredge added 30 assists, 8 digs and 2 block assists. The sophomore setter boosted her career assists total to 1,740.            
  • Molly Breier contributed a team-high 11 digs and is now fast approaching 1,000 career digs. She now has 953.
  • Paige Morris continued her strong play at the net. The junior middle hitter had 6 kills and a .625 hitting percentage, along with 4 block assists.
  • Edinboro hit .360 for the match, while Cal U was at a respectable .282. The Fighting Scots had a block solo and 10 block assists, compared to 1 and 4, respectively, for Cal.

  • Edinboro hits the road for a weekend set at Pitt-Johnstown and Indiana(Pa.) on Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9.
