THE GAME STORIES
  • After starting the season with four straight victories, Edinboro now looks to snap a three-game losing streak. The latest was particularly tough, as the Fighting Scots held an 11-point lead with four minutes remaining at Millersville on December 7. The Marauders would run off the next 11 points and the game eventually went into overtime, with Edinboro suffering a 91-83 loss. Now the Fighting Scots wrap up the 2019 portion of their schedule with a pair of tough PSAC crossover contests. They play at East Stroudsburg, the preseason favorite in the PSAC East, on Friday, followed by at Kutztown on Saturday.
  • Edinboro is in the midst of a stretch of four straight road games. Following the two-game swing to East Stroudsburg and Kutztown to wrap up the 2019 portion of the schedule, the Fighting Scots begin the New Year at local rival Gannon on January 3. Edinboro does not return to McComb Fieldhouse until January 6, hosting West Chester.
  • The Fighting Scots are off to a 4-3 start and are 1-2 in the PSAC West, with a win over Shepherd followed by losses to Shippensburg and Millersville. They were picked to finish tied for seventh in the PSAC coaches' preseason poll.
  • East Stroudsburg is 5-3 and is also 1-2 in league play. The Warriors have won back-to-back games after losing consecutive contests to Pitt-Johnstown and Indiana(Pa.).  They last played on December 7, as well, defeating Clarion, 70-59.  ESU is 3-0 at Koehler Fieldhouse, where they are now 50-9 over the last five years.
  • Kutztown has a 4-5 overall record and is 2-1 in PSAC action. The Golden Bears saw a two-game winning streak snapped with a 74-69 loss at Wilmington last Saturday.  The two-game winning streak included a 92-82 win in overtime over Gannon in their last game on December 7.  They host Slippery Rock on Friday night before playing the Fighting Scots on Saturday.
  • The Fighting Scots showcase the backcourt tandem of Anthony Coleman and Jaryn Simpson. Coleman averages a team-high 18.9 ppg. while Simpson comes in at 14.4 ppg. The 6'3 guards are also two of the team's top rebounders, with Coleman coming in at 5.9 rpg. and Simpson 5.7 rpg.
  • Coleman comes off a 32-point effort at Millersville, tying his career high. He has made 17-of-38 3-pointers and has a team-high 10 steals. He was a second team All-PSAC West selection in 2017-18, then missed most of the 2018-19 season with an injury, playing in just four games.
  • Simpson was also a second team All-PSAC West honoree, earning the honor a year ago after averaging a team-high 18.0 ppg. He made 76-of-210 3-pointers a year ago, and is currently 19-of-45 from beyond the arc. Simpson set a school record for free throw at 90.2 percent from the line, making 110-of-122. That figure led the PSAC, as well.
  • Trey Staunch is a third Fighting Scot in double figures. The former all-conference performer in football is averaging 11.3 ppg. and a team-high 6.6 rpg. while shooting 51.6 percent from the floor (33-of-64). The 6'4", 285 lb. graduate student muscled his way for 14.4 ppg. and a team-leading 7.4 rpg. a year ago.

  • After serving as an assistant coach under Greg Walcavich for 14 years, Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013. He is now in his seventh season at the helm and has a 78-88 record, with three teams making the PSAC Tournament.

  • The 2017-18 Fighting Scots were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They would surprise the league with a fourth place finish at 13-9 in league play, and 18-11 overall. Edinboro would defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament, then hand top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) a defeat in the quarterfinals. The playoff run came to an end with a loss to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals. It marked Edinboro's first appearance in the PSAC Final Four since 2008.
  • Cleary was named the 2018 PSAC West Coach of the Year. The 18 wins were the most by the Fighting Scots since the 2012-13 team won 18 games.

SCOUTING EAST STROUDSBURG
  • East Stroudsburg is under the direction of long-time head coach Jeff Wilson, who is in his 18th year at the helm. The Warriors have enjoyed great success under Wilson, as he shows a 324-174 record. ESU was chosen the preseason favorite in the PSAC East after finishing with a 21-8 record a year ago and qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament for the sixth time in his tenure. The Warriors come in with a 5-3 record and are 1-2 in the PSAC. They have won back-to-back games over Queens(NY) and Clarion. They continue to be a strong defensive team, allowing just 69.1 ppg., good for fourth in the PSAC, and force 22.1 turnovers per game. ESU leads the PSAC in turnover margin at +8.4.  The Warriors average 77.5 ppg. and once again feature a balanced attack. The 2019-20 team is a youthful group with seven freshmen and four sophomores. Carlos Pepin, a 6'6" sophomore, is the leading scorer and rebounder at 10.6 ppg. and 6.4 rpg. He is shooting 54.4 percent from the floor (31-of-57). Kitt Najee Walls, a 6'0" graduate student, is also in double digits at 10.0 ppg. with a team-high 28 assists. Redshirt sophomore guard Marc Rodriguez is the top 3-point threat with 17 in 42 attempts, and averages 9.3 ppg.
SCOUTING KUTZTOWN
  • Like East Stroudsburg, Kutztown is led by a long-time head coach in Bernie Driscoll. Driscoll is in his 20th season and has a 327-233 record, including this year's 4-5 ledger. The Golden Bears are 2-1 in PSAC action prior to Friday's game with Slippery Rock. They suffered a 74-69 loss to Wilmington on Saturday. Driscoll has led Kutztown to four NCAA Tournament appearances. The Golden Bears are one of the high-scoring teams in the conference, averaging 85.0 ppg. That is third in the PSAC. They allow 80.9 ppg.
