Fighting Scots to Face Hofstra, VMI, West Virginia on Sunday at Mountaineer Quad

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling team will have a busy end to the 2019 portion of their schedule, competing in the Mountaineer Quad hosted by West Virginia on Sunday, December 22.
 
Wrestling will begin at 2 p.m. on two mats. The Fighting Scots will wrestle three times, beginning with a match against Hofstra, while West Virginia meets VMI. At approximately 3:30 p.m., it will be Edinboro vs. VMI and WVU squaring off against Hofstra.
 
The day's third set of matches are expected to get underway at 5 p.m., with Edinboro opposing the host Mountaineers in the first meeting against former head coach Tim Flynn. The second mat will feature Hofstra and VMI.
 
The quad will have a distinct Edinboro feel to it. Flynn, the long-time head coach at Edinboro and the career leader in victories, left a year ago to take over the West Virginia program. He took his staff with him, assistant coaches Cliff Moore and Mitchell Port. Then there's Edinboro head coach Matt Hill and assistant coach Ernest James, both wrestlers under Flynn. VMI head coach Jim Gibson was a former teammate of Hill, and assistant coach Ty Schoffstall is also an Edinboro alum.
 
Edinboro comes into the Mountaineer Quad with a 5-2 record after suffering a disappointing 21-19 loss to George Mason on Friday. The Fighting Scots found themselves trailing 18-3 midway through the match before rallying to almost stage a miraculous comeback. Edinboro would win the final three matches, and technical falls by Cody Mulligan at 184 lbs. and Dylan Reynolds at 197 pulled the Scots to within 21-16 with the heavyweight match remaining. Jon Spaulding controlled the action, but was unable to come up with the clinching fall, winning a 12-8 decision.
 
Hofstra owns a 1-0 record. The Fighting Scots and Pride have not met since 2011-12, with Hofstra holding a 3-1 lead in the all-time series following a 26-8 win that year. Edinboro has won all three previous meetings with VMI, with the last meeting a 47-0 win at the Pitt Duals in the 2016-17 season. The Leydets are 2-2.   
Edinboro and former EWL opponent West Virginia meet for the first time since Flynn's last year in 2017-18. Edinboro prevailed 21-15 and holds a 20-10-2 edge in the series. The Mountaineers are 0-5 after a 20-13 loss to Ohio on Friday.
