Edinboro Looks to Begin New Year with PSAC West Win at Gannon

  • The Edinboro-Gannon game can be heard on WFSE-FM 88.9, with Chase Rowland providing the commentary.
THE GAME STORIES
  • Edinboro opened the season with four straight wins, only to follow that up with a four-game losing streak. The Fighting Scots snapped that skld in their last game on December 21 with an 88-86 overtime win at Kutztown. Daylon Harris made a pair of free throws with 0.9 seconds remaining for the winning points. That victory left the Fighting Scots with a 5-4 overall record and 2-3 in PSAC action. 
  • This will be the first of two EUknighted 2020 games as Edinboro and Gannon collaborate to benefit the Pa. Soldiers' & Sailors' Home. The first meeting hosted by Gannon will include a Hoopy Hour from 4-7 p.m. at Molly Brannigan's, with proceeds benefiting the Pa. Soldiers' & Sailors' Home. A similar Hoopy hour will be held prior to the games at Edinboro on February 5, with the Edinboro Hotel hosting the event. For more details, click HERE               
  • Edinboro wraps up a stretch of four straight road games with the short trip up I-79 to Gannon to open PSAC West action. The Gannon contest is the first in 2020 and begins a stretch of three games in six days and four in nine. They will play their first home game since December 1 on Monday, January 6, hosting West Chester, followed two days later with a home game against Pitt-Johnstown.           
  • Gannon also last played on December 21, registering an 89-84 win at Bloomsburg. The day before, the Golden Knights snapped a three-game losing streak that included a loss at Division I St. Bonaventure with a 74-67 win at Mansfield. The back-to-back wins boosted Gannon to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in league play.
  • The Fighting Scots were picked to finish tied for seventh in the PSAC coaches' preseason poll, while Gannon was picked a spot ahead in sixth place. Edinboro is averaging 73.7 ppg., good for 15th in the PSAC, while allowing 79.8 ppg. That figure ranks 14th. Gannon averages 71.4 ppg. (16th) and gives up 74.8 ppg. (8th).       
  • The Fighting Scots showcase the backcourt tandem of Anthony Coleman and Jaryn Simpson. Coleman averages a team-high 19.9 ppg., ranking seventh in the PSAC in scoring, while Simpson comes in at 14.4 ppg. The 6'3 guards are also two of the team's top rebounders, with Coleman coming in at 6.0 rpg. and Simpson 5.7 rpg.
  • Coleman has scored 30-or-more points in two of his last three games, with 32 points at Millersville, tying his career high, followed by 30 points in the win at Kutztown.  He has made 24-of-52 3-pointers and has a team-high 11 steals. He was a second team All-PSAC West selection in 2017-18, then missed most of the 2018-19 season with an injury, playing in just four games.
  • The Fighting Scots hope to have Simpson back for the New Year after he missed the two-game eastern swing with an injury. He was a second team All-PSAC West honore a year ago after averaging a team-high 18.0 ppg. He made 76-of-210 3-pointers a year ago, and is currently 19-of-45 from beyond the arc. Simpson set a school record for free throw at 90.2 percent from the line, making 110-of-122. That figure led the PSAC, as well. Simpson's father, Bronze, is a former Gannon standout and scored over 1,000 career points, while his uncle, Junior Simpson, played at Edinboro.
  • Trey Staunch is a third Fighting Scot in double figures. The former all-conference performer in football is averaging 11.8 ppg. and a team-high 6.1 rpg. while shooting 53.7 percent from the floor (44-of-82). The 6'4", 285 lb. graduate student muscled his way for 14.4 ppg. and a team-leading 7.4 rpg. a year ago.
  • Daylon Harris, a 6'5" senior, came off the bench until joining the starting lineup the last two games. He provides 9.7 ppg. and is shooting 50.8 percent from the floor (31-of-61). Alex Jay comes in at 8.6 ppg. The 6'3" junior adds 5.9 rpg. and has made 17-of-38 3-pointers.

February 16, 2019 – Edinboro 74, Gannon 67 ot at Erie, Pa.
  • DeAnthony Owen sent the game into overtime with a layup with two seconds remaining, and Jaryn Simpson took over from there, scoring 10 points in overtime to lead Edinboro to a split of the season series with the Golden Knights. The contest was tight throughout, with 15 lead changes and seven ties. Edinboro trailed by five points with two-and-a-half minutes remaining at 60-55, but the Fighting Scots would close regulation on a 6-1 run. They never trailed in overtime, scoring the first four points of the extra session. Simpson would make two long 3-pointers in overtime and would finish the game with 20 points. Owens added 18 points and Trey Staunch had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Victor Olawoye led for Golden Knights in double figures with 23 points.
HEAD COACH 
Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 79-90, 7th Year
  • After serving as an assistant coach under Greg Walcavich for 14 years, Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013. He is now in his seventh season at the helm and has a 78-88 record, with three teams making the PSAC Tournament.           
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark.
  • The 2017-18 Fighting Scots were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They would surprise the league with a fourth place finish at 13-9 in league play, and 18-11 overall. Edinboro would defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament, then hand top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) a defeat in the quarterfinals. The playoff run came to an end with a loss to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals. It marked Edinboro's first appearance in the PSAC Final Four since 2008.
  • Cleary was named the 2018 PSAC West Coach of the Year. The 18 wins were the most by the Fighting Scots since the 2012-13 team won 18 games.  
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll.
SCOUTING GANNON
  • Gannon begins 2020 with a 4-5 record and is 3-2 in the PSAC West. The Golden Knights are riding a two-game winning streak after picking up wins at Mansfield (74-67) and Bloomsburg (89-84) on December 20-21. Gannon is under the direction of first-year coach Kelvin Jefferson, who was previously an assistant coach at Division I Old Dominion the last three seasons.  Jefferson welcomed back three starters from a team that finished 11-18 a year ago.  The Golden Knights have four players scoring in double figures, led by Frank Webb Jr. A 6'3" junior guard, Webb is averaging 13.9 ppg. and stands second in rebounding at 5.3 per game. He also leads the team in assists (32) and steals (14). Chris Clancy is a 3-point specialist, with of his 33 field goals from beyond the arc. The 6'2" freshman has made 29-of-57 3-pointers, leading the PSAC in 3-point field goal percentage (50.9 pct.) and ranking second in 3-pointers per game (3.2), while averaging 12.1 ppg. He is also a perfect 14-of-14 at the line. DeAnte Cisero and Victor Olawoye average 11.3 and 10.3 ppg., respectively. Cisero, a 6'6" senior, adds 5.9 rpg. Olawoye, 6'2" sophomore guard, has made 14-of-41 3-pointers.
