Four Fighting Scots Named to Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Super Region 1 Team

Ta'Nauz Gregory was recognized by Football Gazette for the fourth straight year.
CLARION, PA. — The Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Region Committee released the 2019 NCAA Division II All-Super Region 1 squad today, with four Edinboro players earning spots on the team. Brandon Anderson (Willingboro, N.J./Holy Cross) led the way, as the redshirt senior was named to the second team at safety. Ta'Nauz Gregory (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) also earned second team accolades as a return specialist, and was accorded third team honors at wide receiver. Redshirt senior Aaron Rogers (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Twp.) was selected to the third team at cornerback, while redshirt freshman Vicente Arriagada (Bliss, N.Y./Puerto Montt, Chile/Letchworth Central) was recognized on the third team at placekicker.

Slippery Rock quarterback Roland Rivers III, the 2019 Harlon Hill Trophy winner, was named the Super Region 1 Offensive Player of the Year and safety Christopher Jefferson of Findlay was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year. The Freshman of the Year is West Chester running back Ja'Den McKenzie, while the Special Teams Player of the Year was shared by return specialists Marvelle Ross of Notre Dame(Oh.) and Ju'An Williams of New Haven.  Slippery Rock's Shawn Lutz was named Super Region 1 Coach of the Year.

The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen's FB Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.

The first-and second-team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2019 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team will be named in early January.

This is the latest in a long list of honors for Anderson, who was an honorable mention Don Hansen Football Gazette All-American a year ago while earning first team Football Gazette All-Super Region 1 honors.

Anderson was a finalist for the 2019 Cliff Harris Award, presented to the top small college defensive player in the country representing NCAA Division II, Division III and the NAIA. He was also recently named a first team AFCA All-American and was selected a first team All-PSAC West performer for the third straight year.  He earned a spot on the AFCA first team at defensive back and was the first Fighting Scot to earn AFCA All-American honors since 2011. He also earned second team D2CCA All-Super Region 1 honors for the second straight year.

Anderson capped a brilliant career in which he started all 44 games over the last four years by leading the Fighting Scots in tackles for the third straight year. The 6'1", 200 lb. strong safety finished with 100 tackles, including a team-high 50 solo. He had 7.0 tackles for losses and 1.5 sacks, along with tying for the team lead with 4 interceptions, good for 14 yards. He had 6 pass break ups, which was tied for second on the team, along with a pair of forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He ranked fifth in the PSAC in tackles per game (9.1), was tied for fifth in interceptions (4) and tied for 14th in passes defended (10).

Like Anderson, Gregory is a repeat performer on the Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Super Region 1 team.  In fact, he was as Football Gazette honoree all four years. The diminutive senior began his career in 2016 as the Don Hansen NCAA Division II Freshman of the Year, was the Don Hansen Super Region One Freshman of the Year, and was named to the All-Super Region One third team as both an all-purpose player and return specialist. In 2017, he was named to the third team as a return specialist, and a year ago he earned a spot on the third team at wide receiver.

Gregory was also recognized all four years by the PSAC. He was the 2016 PSAC West Freshman of the Year, and in 2017 was a second team All-PSAC West choice as a return specialist. He moved up to the first team at wide receiver a year ago, and was named to the first team as a return specialist this year, along with earning second team accolades at wide receiver.

The 5'9" senior led Edinboro in receptions (67), yards receiving (931), and receiving TDs (7) while playing in all 11 games. The 67 receptions ranks fourth in a season, and the 931 yards is seventh. Gregory ranked fourth in the PSAC in receptions per game and fifth in receiving yards per game.

He also once again excelled as a return specialist, averaging 25.5 yards on 21 kickoff returns and 5.0 yards on six punt returns.

Gregory wrapped up his career holding numerous records. He holds the career records for reception (234), yards receiving (3,261) and kickoff return yards (2,146), along with being tied for first in receiving touchdowns (35). He stands second in career all-purpose yards (5,796) and sixth in punt return yards (328).

Arriagada enjoyed a record-breaking season in his first campaign as the starting placekicker. The redshirt freshman broke the school record for field goals made in a season, converting on 16-of-20. The 20 attempts ranks third. He had an incredible run after making one field goal in the first four games. He would make three field goals in three games over the next four weeks, including the winning 35-yarder as time expired in an 18-17 win at Gannon. He made at least two field goals in five of the last seven contests, and at least one in each of those games. He was also a perfect 22-of-22 on extra points. Arrigada's 46-yard field goal against Gannon is the 11th-longest successful field goal at Edinboro.

Rogers, a 6'2", 192 lb. redshirt senior cornerback, made a triumphant return after missing the majority of the 2018 season with an injury. He overcame a bump in the road to start the season, suffering an injury at Grand Valley State that forced him to miss two games. He would return against Cal U and play the best football of his career the rest of the way. Rogers finished fourth on the team in tackles with 61 while playing in just nine games. He tied Anderson for the team lead in interceptions with four, for 124 yards. He returned two for touchdowns, a 55-yarder vs. Seton Hill and a 52-yard TD return at Bloomsburg. He had a team-high 9 passes broken up along with recovering a fumble. Rogers led the PSAC in passes defended per game.
