THE GAME STORIES

  • Edinboro has faced a very difficult schedule of late, and it doesn't get any easier with ninth-ranked Indiana(Pa.) visiting McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots seek an end to a four-game losing streak and have fallen to 5-8 overall and 2-7 in the PSAC West. IUP comes in with a 13-1 record and is tied for first atop the Western Division with Pitt-Johnstown at 8-1. Coming into the game, including IUP, Edinboro's last four opponents had a record of 46-8, with IUP and West Chester both ranked in the top ten nationally.
  • The Fighting Scots last played on Saturday at Cal U. They would jump out to a 13-0 lead but a hot-shooting Cal team would end up handing a weary Edinboro squad a 108-71 defeat. IUP improved to 13-1 overall and 8-1 in league play with an 85-64 win at Gannon. The Crimson Hawks went into the contest ranked ninth in the latest NABC Division II Top 25 and have now won four games in a row to jump to seventh in the latest rankings. Their lone loss was a 69-66 setback at Shippensburg.
  • The Fighting Scots were picked to finish tied for seventh in the PSAC coaches' preseason poll, while Indiana(Pa.) was the preseason favorite in the Western Division. Edinboro is averaging 72.9 ppg., good for 16th in the PSAC, and is 17th in scoring defense, allowing 83.2 ppg. IUP ranks fourth in the PSAC in scoring at 82.1 ppg., while leading the PSAC in scoring defense at 64.2 ppg. The latter figure is good for ninth nationally. They also lead the PSAC and rank 11th in field goal percentage defense at 39.5 percent.
  • The contest will feature numerous players from the I-79 corridor, as both teams take advantage of District 10. The Edinboro roster features Jack Gallagher (McDowell), Alex Jay (General McLane), Turner Kurt (Cambridge Springs), Samuel Lawal (Erie First Christian Academy), Jaryn Simpson (Cathedral Prep), and Trey Staunch (West Middlesex). IUP counters with Armoni Foster (Meadville), Chucky Humphries (Aliquippa), Malik Miller (Farrell), Dave Morris (Strong Vincent), and Ethan Porterfield (Sharon).
  • Anthony Coleman paces Edinboro in scoring at 18.8 ppg., ranking seventh in the PSAC.     He is second on the team in rebounding at 5.7 rpg. and has made 33-of-79 3-pointers, along with being tied for the team lead with 12 steals. He has had six games of 20-or-more points, including a pair of 30-point efforts. He matched his career high with 32 points at Millersville, followed by 30 points in the win at Kutztown. Coleman was a second team All-PSAC West selection in 2017-18, then missed most of the 2018-19 season with an injury, playing in just four games.
  • Backcourt mate Jaryn Simpson adds 15.0 ppg. and 5.6 rpg., along with a team-high 52 assists and 12 steals. He ranks fifth in assists in the PSAC and has made 31-of-76 3-pointers. That's good for fourth in the conference in 3-pointers made per game (2.67) and fifth in 3-point field goal percentage (40.8 pct.).  The 6'3" junior guard had his best game of the season vs. West Chester, scoring 27 points and handing out seven assists. He followed that up with his second double-double of the season last Wednesday vs. UPJ with 18 points and 12 rebounds.  He was a second team All-PSAC West honoree a year ago after averaging a team-high 18.0 ppg. He made 76-of-210 3-pointers a year ago. Simpson set a school record for free throw at 90.2 percent from the line, making 110-of-122. That figure led the PSAC, as well.
  • Trey Staunch is the third Fighting Scot in double figures. The former all-conference performer at offensive tackle in football is averaging 13.5 ppg. and a team-high 7.2 rpg. while shooting 56.0 percent from the floor (70-of-125), good for fifth in the PSAC. He had 20 points and a career-high 17 rebounds vs. UPJ. The 6'4", 285 lb. graduate student muscled his way for 14.4 ppg. and a team-leading 7.4 rpg. a year ago.
  • Daylon Harris, a 6'5" senior, came off the bench until joining the starting lineup the last six games. He was one of the bright spots in the loss at Cal, finishing with 18 points and making 4-of-8 3-pointers. He has boosted his scoring average to 10.4 ppg. Alex Jay comes in at 6.7 ppg. The 6'3" junior adds 5.5 rpg. and has made 19-of-50 3-pointers.   ?

HEAD COACH
Pat Cleary (Edinboro '99) -- 79-94, 7th Year
  • After serving as an assistant coach under Greg Walcavich for 14 years, Pat Cleary was introduced as Edinboro's tenth head coach on March 26, 2013. He is now in his seventh season at the helm and has a 78-88 record, with three teams making the PSAC Tournament.
  • Cleary's first three teams improved each year, with his 2015-16 team earning the third seed in the PSAC West Tournament with a 15-11 overall record and 14-8 league mark.
  • The 2017-18 Fighting Scots were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC West Coaches' Preseason Poll. They would surprise the league with a fourth place finish at 13-9 in league play, and 18-11 overall. Edinboro would defeat Pitt-Johnstown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament, then hand top-seeded Indiana(Pa.) a defeat in the quarterfinals. The playoff run came to an end with a loss to eventual PSAC champion East Stroudsburg in the semifinals. It marked Edinboro's first appearance in the PSAC Final Four since 2008.
  • Cleary was named the 2018 PSAC West Coach of the Year. The 18 wins were the most by the Fighting Scots since the 2012-13 team won 18 games.
  • He guided Edinboro to the PSAC Tournament for the first time in 2014-15 with a 14-13 record, a four-game improvement over his first year, after being chosen to finish eighth in the PSAC West preseason poll.
SCOUTING INDIANA(PA)
  • IUP is ranked seventh in the latest NABC Division II Top 25. The Crimson Hawks ran off nine straight wins to start the season, followed by a three-point setback at Shippensburg (69-66), and have now four games in a row to improve to 13-1 overall and 8-1 in PSAC action.  Head coach Joe Lombardi, a former assistant at Pittsburgh, is in his 14th season with the Crimson Hawks and has a 318-101 overall record with nine NCAA tournament appearances, nine regular season division titles, three PSAC Tournament championships (2010, 2011, 2013, 2019), two Atlantic Region Championships (2010, 2015), and two Division II national title game appearances (2010, 2015). While just one starter returned from last year's 30-3 edition, he has quickly reloaded. The Crimson Hawks showcase a pair of double figure scorers, led by former Meadville High School standout Armoni Foster. The 6'2" redshirt sophomore averages 18.6 ppg. and has made 25-of-70 3-pointers. He is also shooting 53.1 percent from the floor (95-of-179) and has a team-leading 27 steals. Malik Miller, the lone returning starter and a first team All-PSAC West selection a year ago, comes in at 16.6 ppg. and has made 27-of-90 3-pointers. He averages 5.4 rpg. and leads the team with 51 assists. The 6'4" senior guard ranks 23rd in career scoring with 1,203 points. Local basketball fans will be very familiar with Dave Morris. A former standout at Strong Vincent High School, Morris began his career at Tennessee State before joining IUP this year. Now that the starting point guard, the 6'1" redshirt sophomore is averaging 8.8 ppg. with 50 assists. Six Crimson Hawks have made 10-or-more 3-pointers, and the same six have 11-or-more steals.
