MATCH STORYLINES
  • Edinboro hits the highways for back-to-back Mid-American Conference matches against a pair of former EWL foes. Taking to the mat for the first time since January 5, the Fighting wrestle at Bloomsburg on Thursday, January 16. The next day they head further east to face a string Rider squad on Friday, January 17.
  • Earlier this year, the Mid-American Conference announced the addition of the seven Eastern Wrestling League members, including Edinboro, as affiliate members. The move brought the MAC to 15 teams, the second-largest wrestling conference in Division I.
  • Edinboro is currently 8-4 overall record and is 2-2 in MAC competition. The Fighting Scots won their first-ever MAC dual, 29-6 over Kent State, and followed that with a 25-7 win over Ohio. They would drop a 21-19 decision to George Mason on December 20, and on January 5, lost to Buffalo, 25-13. Bloomsburg is 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the MAC, with losses to Rider (28-11) and Lock Haven (26-12). Rider is 6-2 and 2-1, respectively. The Broncs beat Northern Illinois, 26-6, in their first-ever MAC dual. In addition to the win over Bloomsburg, they suffered a 28-10 loss to Central Michigan. Last weekend, Rider won the Virginia Duals, defeating 17th-ranked Virginia in the finals, 20-12. Before that, the Broncs finished eighth at the Southern Scuffle with three wrestlers placing.
  • Head coach Matt Hill, a former Edinboro standout, is in his second season in charge at his alma mater. He previously spent 11 years as an assistant coach at Kent State. Hill faced a major rebuilding project a year ago after five national qualifiers transferred following the departure of head coach Tim Flynn to West Virginia. Hill's first edition finished 2-9 in duals and placed fourth at the EWL Championships.
  • Edinboro is currently ranked ninth in the MAC Coaches December Rankings. Rider comes in ranked second behind Missouri, and Bloomsburg is 13th. Three Fighting Scots are ranked in the individual weight class rankings, led by jon Spaulding. The junior is ranked second at heavyweight and comes in with a 15-5 record.  Jacob Oliver, a redshirt sophomore, is ranked third at 174 lbs. with a 15-4 ledger. Freshman Tye Varndell (13-6) is fifth at 133 lbs. Oliver will renew acquaintances with Dean Sherry (16-5) of Rider, who is number one at 174 lbs. in the MAC rankings. The two split a pair of matches last year, with Sherry defeating Oliver in the EWL championship match.
  • Rider has six wrestlers in the MAC poll. In addition to Sherry, Jesse Dellavecchia is ranked first at 157 lbs., and is ranked seventh in the latest InterMat rankings. Ethan Laird, a junior from nearby General McLane High School, is first at 197 lbs. with an 18-6 record. He is rankled ninth according to InterMat. George Walton is second in the MAC poll at 184 lbs., Jonathan Tropea is fourth at 125 lbs., and Ryan Cloud is sixth at heavyweight. Bloomsburg has a pair of grapplers in the MAC poll.  Trevor Allard (14-1) tops the 184 lb. class, along with ranking 13th nationally. Nate Newberry is tied for sixth at 165 lbs.
  • Jacob Oliver was named the MAC Eastern Division Wrestler of the Week after winning the championship at 174 lbs. at the Navy Classic. The redshirt sophomore was Edinboro's lone wrestler to qualify for Nationals a year ago, finishing at 28-7.
