THE GAME STORIES
  • With potentially poor weather conditions predicted for Saturday, the Edinboro-Clarion doubleheader was moved up a day to Friday night. Both teams hope the change might be favorable for them. Edinboro has lost five straight games and is now 5-9 overall and 2-8 in the PSAC West. Clarion is looking to snap a seven-game losing skid and owns a 2-14 overall record and 1-9 in league play. The Fighting Scots are playing the middle game of a three-game homestand. It wraps up next Wednesday, January 22 when Seton Hill visits McComb Fieldhouse.
  • Edinboro has faced a very difficult schedule of late. Including Wednesday's game vs. Indiana(Pa.), the combined record of Edinboro's last four opponent's coming into the game was 46-8, with IUP ranked seventh nationally and West Chester tenth.
  • The Fighting Scots were without leading scorer Anthony Coleman against IUP. The 6'3" redshirt senior missed the game with an injury. He is averaging 18.8 ppg. and has made 33-of-79 3-pointers. He is tied for fifth in the PSAC in scoring. He is second on the team in rebounding at 5.7 rpg., along with being second on the team with 12 steals. He has had six games of 20-or-more points, including a pair of 30-point efforts. He matched his career high with 32 points at Millersville, followed by 30 points in the win at Kutztown. Coleman was a second team All-PSAC West selection in 2017-18, then missed most of the 2018-19 season with an injury, playing in just four games.
  • The Fighting Scots were picked to finish tied for seventh in the PSAC coaches' preseason poll, while Clarion was voted ninth.  Edinboro is averaging 71.5 ppg., good for 16th in the PSAC, and is 17th in scoring defense, allowing 83.6 ppg. Clarion ranks 18th in the PSAC in scoring at 62.1 ppg., but stands ninth in scoring defense at 75.1 ppg.
  • After earning second team All-PSAC West honors a year ago, junior Jaryn Simpson is enjoying another strong season. He is averaging 14.8 ppg. and 5.4 rpg., along with a team-high 56 assists and 14 steals. He ranks third in assists in the PSAC and has made 33-of-84 3-pointers. That's good for fourth in the conference in 3-pointers made per game (2.8). The 6'3" guard had his best game of the season vs. West Chester, scoring 27 points and handing out seven assists. He followed that up with his second double-double of the season last Wednesday vs. UPJ with 18 points and 12 rebounds. A year ago, he averaged a team-high 18.0 ppg., making 76-of-210 3-pointers. Simpson set a school record for free throw at 90.2 percent from the line, making 110-of-122. That figure led the PSAC, as well.
  • Trey Staunch is the third Fighting Scot in double figures. The former all-conference performer at offensive tackle in football is averaging 13.4 ppg. and a team-high 7.1 rpg. while shooting 53.2 percent from the floor (74-of-139), good for seventh in the PSAC. He leads the conference and ranks ninth in Division II in free throw percentage at 90.9 percent (40-of-44). Staunch had 20 points and a career-high 17 rebounds vs. UPJ. The 6'4", 285 lb. graduate student muscled his way for 14.4 ppg. and a team-leading 7.4 rpg. a year ago.
  • Anthony Allen has seen limited action as Staunch's backup, but the 6'8" senior enjoyed his best game vs. IUP. He made 5-of-6 field goals to finish with a career-high 10 points, adding five rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
  • Daylon Harris, a 6'5" senior, came off the bench until joining the starting lineup the last six games. He was one of the bright spots in the loss at Cal, finishing with 18 points and making 4-of-8 3-pointers. He has boosted his scoring average to 9.8 ppg. Alex Jay comes in at 6.5 ppg. The 6'3" junior adds 5.6 rpg. and has made 20-of-54 3-pointers.
