Oliver Wins Rematch with Sherry, Spaulding Picks Up 50th Career Win, but Edinboro Falls to Rider, 20-12

Jacob Oliver won his seventh straight match.
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Edinboro wrestling team dropped the back-end of its two-match eastern swing on Friday night, suffering a 20-12 loss at Rider. Edinboro is now 9-5 overall and 3-3 in Mid-American Conference action, while Rider improved to 7-2 and is 3-1. The Broncs came in ranked second in the MAC monthly rankings, while Edinboro is ninth.

As has been the case for much of the year, the Fighting Scots fell behind early before attempting to rally. That was the case again on Friday, as they won three of the final four bouts. However, Rider led 17-3 at that point and the Fighting scots were unable to come up with any bonus point wins. In fact, the night featured very tight decisions with the exception of a 16-0 technical fall by Peter Lipari over Richie Gomez at 141 lbs. Gomez was filling in for regular starter Nate Hagan.

The highlight of the night for Edinboro came at 174 lbs., where Jacob Oliver renewed his rivalry with Dean Sherry. The two split a pair of matches last year, with Sherry claiming the EWL title with a fall in the championship match.

Oliver would gain a measure of revenge, as the redshirt sophomore improved to 16-4 rallied for a wild 13-11 win, his seventh straight victory. Sherry (16-6) held a 7-3 lead after one period, but a reversal and a pair of takedowns for Oliver knotted the match at 9-9 after two periods. He would tack on two more takedowns in the third to hold off Sherry.

The match began with Lucas Rodriguez improving to 14-7 with a 6-5 decision over Jonathan Tropea (15-8) at 125 lbs. He held a 4-3 lead after two periods and added a takedown in the third after Tropea had knotted the match with an escape.

Rider would run off wins in the next five matches, with three of those by one-point decisions. Anthony Cefolo (8-5) used a third-period takedown for a 3-2 decision over Tye Varndell (13-8) at 133 lbs.  At 149 lbs., Gino Fluri edged Tyler Vath (9-11), 3-2. Seventh-ranked Jesse Dellavecchia received a strong challenge from Edinboro's Peter Pappas (14-9), but would improve to 21-2 with a 1-0 decision. He picked up the winning point with a second period escape. Joe Casey (12-9) closed the run with a 7-1 decision over Derek Ciavarro (10-9).

Oliver began Edinboro's comeback attempt as the Fighting Scots would win three of the last four bouts. Cody Mulligan, a redshirt freshman who has been involved in numerous close matches this season, improved to 14-8 with a 4-3 decision over George Walton (17-8). Walton would lead 1-0 after two periods and held a 3-1 lead before Mulligan rallied with an escape and the winning takedown.

Like Oliver and Sherry, Dylan Reynolds and Ethan Laird were well-acquainted at 197 lbs. Both are local products, with Reynolds from Cambridge Springs High School and Laird from General McLane High School. They had split two previous meetings, with Reynolds prevailing 3-2 a year ago.

This time Laird, ranked ninth by InterMat, came away with the 3-2 decision to improve to 19-6. Reynolds, now 14-8, led 1-0 after two periods thanks to a second period escape. Laird tied the match with an escape to start the third and would follow with the lone takedown.

Jon Spaulding would wrap up the evening with his 50th career win at heavyweight. The junior posted a 5-1 decision over Ryan Cloud (16-10) on the strength of first and third period takedowns. Spaulding is now 17-5 and has won seven of his last eight matches.
